CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE Director Rawson Marshall Thurber In Talks To Helm SPY VS. SPY Movie

Ever heard of MAD Magazine? Well, one of their greatest skits named Spy vs. Spy will be getting a live-action movie, and Warner Bros is now in talks to recruit Rawson Marshall Thurber to direct it...

Just in case you weren't aware, MAD was a magazine that did parodies of pretty much everything. They also had their own original skits, and one of their most well known ones was Spy vs. Spy

Warner Bros and Imagine Entertainment have been developing a film for Spy vs. Spy since 2011, with Ron Howard originally on board to helm the movie. Things obviously fell through, so it appears Rawson Marshall Thurber is now in talks to direct. He's known for helming movies such as Central Intelligence, Skyscraper and DodgeBall: A True Underdog Story. This is being developed as a comedy action movie, so it should be up his alley.

Basically, Spy vs. Spy was a skit that involved two beaked-nosed spies trying to kill each other. It was a wordless comic strip, that had nothing but the spies themselves and the booby traps they would set up.

Making a live action movie out of something so simple seems like an interesting choice, to say the least. However, if done well, it could be a decent hit. Also, it would introduce a part of the MAD world to a new generation.

What about that Tom Hardy Chris Pine movie from a while back? Wasnt that basically spy vs spy? (It may or may not have been Chris Pine I dont remember)

@dracula - it was a tag line. That movie was called this means war. It might've been called spy vs. Spy early in production.

@MrCamw1 - I found the movie enjoyable enough, but that's not to say it was good. Reese Witherspoon was your typical semi-clueless romantic comedy lead. Chelsea Handler was absolutely unbearable, and letting her improvise most of her lines just didn't help. And Tom Hardy was just miscast. He was fine, acting-wise, but the character he was playing was just softer than we're used to seeing him play (even though he was still a badass agent alongside Pine).

I remember reading the comic strips, they were fun. Based on this guy's previous movies, this is gonna be crap

Feel like this would be better suited as an animated series than a movie

@tmp3 - all they need is shorts, its like with Tom and Jerry all we want to see is them chasing each other.

@tmp3 - its literally 2 spies pulling traps on each other. Maybe as part of an anthology movie it could work, but definitely not enough for a film.

Very fond memories of plying the Spy vs, Spy video game way back when.

Steve Carell has the nose for it. Have him in a dual role playing both spies.

@DetectiveCinema - they could just animate it

Part of the charm of this was the art. Too little to make a movie out of. This should be animated shorts. Idea stolen from several posts above mine.

@RolandD - Wish WB would do animated shorts before their movies again.
Imagine 5 minute shorts of:
Superman,
Batman,
Wonder Woman,
Flash,
Green Lantern,
Bugs Bunny,
Daffy Duck,
Flintstones,
Yogi Bear etc.

Would be fun especially if they made them exclusive to theaters and wait to release all of them on dvd like a year after the last one was released in theaters.

@kider - Delete your post and sell this idea to WB! Quick. Seriously sounds like a great idea. They would have to make them quality. Take them as seriously as Pixar does with their shorts, not that they have to be serious in tone, of course.

@RolandD - They could do it like My Neighbours the Yamadas, a series of vignettes.

Guess what? It’s already been animated. Done. Let’s move on.

Used to love Mad magazine and spy vs. spy so why not. The guy directed Dodgeball and that was funny.

I used to love those comics. I can only imagine they will likely botch it on screen by over-complicating a super basic concept.

Yeeeah, how many live action cartoons turn out good? Not many. Just make it animated with vignettes or something. They dont need to be longform
