In the closing moments of John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum, the title character was shot off the side of the New York Continental Hotel by Winston Scott after crossing the High Table. Winston knows he survived, though, and John Wick: Chapter 4 begins with the assassin now hoping to find redemption.

The High Table, meanwhile, still wants him dead, prompting their leader, Marquis Vincent de Gramon, to place a bounty on his head that can end one of two ways: with John's death or if the aptly named Baba Yaga can replace him.

After being put through the wringer and killing a lot of people, John reunites with Winston and officially challenges the Marquis to a duel. With the bounty on his head raised, he arrives at that battle badly wounded and, despite facing even more challengers than expected, manages to outsmart his foe before shooting him dead.

With that, Winston is reinstated as the concierge of the rebuilt New York Continental, but John is fatally wounded from the trials and tribulations he's endured.

Thinking of his late wife, Helen, he dies peacefully on the steps of the church and is later buried in New York next to her while Winston and the Bowery King pay their respects.

A post-credits scene later reveals that High Table assassin Caine (who was one of John's old allies) is looking to finally reunite with his daughter after the High Table used her to force the blind assassin to go after his friend. However, he's being followed by Akira, Koji's daughter, who has set out on a mission of vengeance after her own father's death at Caine's hands.

Ballerina and The Continental are both set prior to the events of John Wick: Chapter 4 and, despite plans for a cameo appearance in the former, John's present-day story is over. The character is dead and this movie could quite easily serve as a fitting farewell to the assassin.

However, there's enough ambiguity surrounding John's demise to make it so that he could return should a fifth movie eventually happen. That has been greenlit, of course, but Keanu Reeves has made it clear he's taking a break from the role for now.

What did you think about John Wick: Chapter 4's ending?

Isn't the fifth movie already filmed? Thought it was filmed back-to-back with 4, but maybe I don't remember that right

@bkmeijer1 - that was the original plan but that was abandoned before shooting started. Given the length of part 4 I would argue that they maybe just turned the two movies into one?

@Blergh - guess that makes sense too. It is a pretty long movie indeed

@bkmeijer1 - it's weird. The supposed fatal wound he suffered is exactly the kind of wound he survived in John wick 2 specifically. And if anything it's bleeding less than there. I was spending the whole time until the credits assuming it had to be a fake out.

If this is where the character dies I'm fine with it.
No need for a fifth movie as John's story has already been at its end when the series started.

If anything I'd argue for the series to go back into his old days or explore new avenues of the franchise.
They did a great job at the world building so I see this as having worked out well for non-Wick projects.

This was one of the most jaw-dropping action films I've ever witnessed.

Haven't felt that way since Mad Max: Fury Road. I now don't look forward to any action film simply because they raised the bar so high in this, I doubt anything in the next 3-4 years (at least) will be able to top or at least match it.

Brilliant choreography and camera work.

Donnie Yen was amazing and stole every scene he was in.

And credit to Keanu for the insane effort he put in his action scenes in this one. I cringe at the fact the most they gave him in Resurrections was a "force push", considering what he put on display in this film.

10/10 - easily. I need to see it again asap.

Keanu, Chan, Stallone, Arnold, Cruise, Yen, Li

Chapter 4 is up there with Raid 2 for me. A classic.

The movie had a lot of great action scenes but honestly I felt it was too much! It’s kind of like the Fast & Furious sequels where each one has to be bigger and more outlandish than the last one. I loved the first movie, it was very solid! The sequels were fun to watch but really just became more over the top action wise and the believability just went right out the window. Still the shots in Japan were really beautifully done and the floor plan view with the Dragon rounds was pretty awesome. Also I love seeing Donnie Yen.

You have to apreciate the studio willing to END a multi-billion dollar franchise.

Of course, as other people mentioned, they could always take the "lets go nuts" route, and make a sequel with John fighting in hell, or something like that.

The director has actually said he’s “leaving it up to the audience” to decide whether John is dead, and by movie-logic rules we’ve only been shown a gravestone, so IF they wanted him back they could have it that Winston faked his death but John is retired somewhere… or something.

BUT, personally, I want the series to continue with Donnie Yen as the lead. Not to be a dick, but Keanu was definitely showing signs of slowing down, whereas Donnie Yen moved 5 times faster? Dude is insane. Would love more of him in this series.

@SeanMPC - I think that's intentional, in the training videos for chapter 4 Keanu looks like he moves faster than people half his age. Wick I think was made to show he was tired and ready to go.

“ With that, Winston is reinstated as the concierge of the rebuilt New York Continental,”

Isn’t Winston the Manager and not the Concierge?

What’s the point of this brief spoiler article if you’re going to leave out so many of even the minor details around how he arrived at that ending?

There's no reason for "ambiguity" and a surprise return from the dead, since he's free and clear of everything at the end of this movie. He can now safely walk down the street eating a burrito if he likes. But then again, there's also no reason for this article to have "explained" in it's title. . .
