Steven Moffat Confirms That The SHERLOCK Christmas Special Will Be Set In Victorian London

Co-creator of BBC's Sherlock, Steven Moffat, revealed at SXSW that the highly anticipated special will not see Sherlock and Watson in contemporary London, but will instead see the duo in the Victorian Era.

Not so long ago Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman were spotted wearing 19th century clothing while filming a Christmas Special for Sherlock. This led many fans to speculate whether or not this the special would be set in Victorian London.

Today before attending a panel at SXSW, Steven Moffat spoke with Entertainment Weekly and confirmed that the special will in fact take place in the Victorian era.

“The special is its own thing, we wouldn’t have done the story we’re doing, and the way we’re doing it, if we didn’t have this special. It’s not part of the run of three episodes. So we had this to do it – as we could hardly conceal – it’s Victorian. [Co-creator Mark Gatiss] and me, we wanted to do this, but it had to be a special, it had to be separate entity on its own. It’s kind of in its own little bubble.”

Moffat then adds that they are pretty much finished with the Christmas special. While there is no exact air date set for the special it is expected to air some time in December.

I love when creators aren't afraid to have some fun with their shows at the risk of not being taken 100% seriously. Musical episode maybe??

cool. The series is great, third season was not a letdown (i think the third episode His Last Vow was one of the best in the series. Lars Mikkelsen was awesome). Also it's better than Downey and Ritchie blockbustered version (part1. i did not see part 2). Gotta wait for Christmas ? Duh ...

Lars Mikkelsen was wasted in that role, unfortunately. Don't get me wrong, he absolutely KILLED it...but it was such a brief appearance overall. They (not to mention Sherlock) definitely made the wrong choice in that last episode.

The Sign of Three was my absolute favorite of the season. Knocked it right out of the park, IMO.

In any event, I like the idea of this special. It shows the creators aren't afraid to have some fun with their show. Season 3 got a little "too" meta and in-your-face at times, but this special won't have any impact on the rest of the show, so why not?

Sherlock is awesome, so I look forward to this. The amount of AMAZING tv shows is astounding. I just started Mad Men and True Detective. Both are solid. American Crime, if the beginning is any indication, is solid. House of Cards is awesome. Better Call Saul MIGHT be better than Breaking Bad's first season. Lots To love. Game of Thrones and Daredevil in the same weekend!!

Tv is becoming the PREMIER medium to tell a story, live action wise. With the amount of great channels (AMC, HBO and Netflix), great writing, actors (Cranston, Spacey, and more not to mention the amount of actors from Hollywood like Matthew M. And Steve Buscemi who are on tv shows) and the high budgets make these shows Oscar material.

@BatHeis I believe Mad Men is the best show in this Golden Era of TV. Better than GoT (which I love), Breaking Bad (love) and True Detective (really respect).

I was disappointed by Season 3, but this sounds great. Can't wait.

Better than Breaking Bad?

But I've only seen the first two episodes. I'm Okay with being wrong, it's just that Breaking Bad is obviously my favorite show ever, but also my top 5 live action works in any medium, ever.

@V8ER

Ozymandias, with Face-Off, Gliding Over All, ABQ Felina, and Half Measures all close. Ozymandias is perfectly brilliant. I could argue it's better than the Dark Knight, and win.

@BatHeis Totally agreed. All great episodes. I think it might be the best form of entertainment on tv or a movie I've ever seen. Bryan Cranston is one of the best actors of our generation.

I knew the special would have nothing to do with the ongoing storyline.

I'll still watch though. I need my Sherlock fix as I needed my DCI Banks fix for so long.

@SauronsBANE

I have a mixture of feelings when it comes to Magnussen. I thought the character was a blast and different, but could still be looked at as formidable enough for Sherlock in the veins of Moriarty but in the end he just felt like a filler villain until the big twist at the end. If Moriarty were to have stayed dead(or whatever is happening with him), I think the use of Magnussen wouldn't have left such a stale taste. Sherlock is becoming 'Sherlock vs Moriarty' and that completely ruined the effect that Magnussen could have brought to the series.

@MisterSuperior Totally agreed. He was such a different villain from Moriarty and it seemed like they were building him up to be the new long-term bad guy of the show...and then they had Sherlock do that, just so they could seemingly bring back Moriarty. What a waste.
MisterSuperior
MisterSuperior - 3/17/2015, 9:28 AM
@SauronsBANE

It certainly worries me if they ever bring in a new villain simply because the show already seems to just focus on Moriarty.

This looks really cool :)

@SauronsBANE There are actually rumors that Moriarty would not be alive in the future season of Sherlock. The season will focus on Moriarty's plan that he made in case of situation of him being dead while Sherlock lives. One of those cunning plans that, ones set in motion just rolls with it's own weight. But these are just internet rumors.
SauronsBANE
SauronsBANE - 3/17/2015, 10:29 AM
@MisterSuperior Yep. It's even worse because I absolutely LOVED Andrew Scott's take on Moriarty...but even I think this has the potential to be too much. He was a great villain for the first 2 seasons...but it's time to move on already.

Though if what @Odin says turns out to be true, it'd be a little easier to swallow. I mean, I guess it makes sense that if Sherlock would come up with a ridiculously convoluted plan to survive his fall, then Moriarty also would've made plans for some extra trouble even after he died.

I'm just not sure Sherlock even needs a new villain anymore. We did Moriarty, we did Magnusson, let's just focus on Sherlock and John solving crime together.
MisterSuperior
MisterSuperior - 3/17/2015, 11:02 AM
@SauronsBANE @Odin

If that is the case and if it was just going to be a matter of time before Moriarty's "Plan B" starts, then I think it could definitely NOT cheapen the effect of Magnussen. Let's hope, even if it's just a rumor, that it's true. It wouldn't feel like such a disappointment with Magnussen then, imo.

I still can't put anything over Breaking Bad, except Better Call Saul over the first season of BB.
