Voltron Movie Getting Attention

80s kids rejoice!

We all let out an 80s kid cheer when Voltron was picked up by “The Dark Knight” producer Charles Roven's Atlas Entertainment and Jason Netter's Kickstart Entertainment. Its now time for three cheers as it looks like pre-production may not be too far off.

MTV Movies Blog reports that The United Talent Agency has picked up “Voltron” and its U.S. rights holder World Events Productions as clients, according to The Hollywood Reporter. UTA is expected to help Roven and Netter find a screenwriter for “Voltron” before shopping it around to the major film studios. The announcement also hints at a new “Voltron” animated series that may be close to a deal, in addition to possible new “Voltron” video games and toys.

Hopefully the movie maintains the sense of heroism and imagination that made it such a success back in the day. There's potential for an amazing marriage of live action and cgi in this one. Throw in a great story and we're going to have one fun flick.

Oh...this movie has such potential. Sadly, it's potential that could go either way: it could potentially be wicked awesome or potentially suck taint. I'm hoping for the first option.

Keep Michael Bay away from this. Voltron was kick-ass, I just hope when this does get off the ground it doesn't turn into another Transformers fiasco. That they use Transformers as a template of what direction to not go in.

@ exksmenfan

the same can be said about any movie, but i know what you mean, it has a lot more potential to suck than most movies.

i'm just not liking the track record of 80's cartoons being made into live action movies. they are never going to do justice for the original fans that watched the cartoons when they were younger, but then kids like flames will think its totally awesome and deserves an oscar. but i hope i'm wrong about this one.

are they still planning on making robotech?? that was always a little more mature than most 80's cartoons.

@ tea

instead of lions, they should use construction vehicles with giant wrecking ball testicles, that would be awesome!

As excited as I am about this news, I have to agree with teabag.

Mazinger or Gundams translate much better to films than Voltron.

@ Corndog- This has Oscar written all over it! If you add giant robot testicles, it's a shoe-in!

@ Tea- I agree totally! I'm all for this movie being made, I loved it as a kid; it just needs to be done right.

If they got the Transformers to the big screen you bet your ass Voltron will be there too. Five lions, planet Aris, robeast, I don't want an Earth bound Voltron, stick with the cartoon.
SkunkApe1
SkunkApe1 - 10/7/2009, 3:15 AM
Make sure its the Voltron with the lion's, not the other one, which I never understood as a kid.

Go back even further into the 70's for some stuff.

YES to the movie, NO to a new cartoon. For some reason they can't make cartoons anymore. Even the Japanese have lost the touch, they can't even pull off Pokemon series anymore. A live action version should not be hard to pull off. But I think this will go on in development purgatory just like the Neon Genesis Evangelion movie.

If they are going back in the day then they might want to think about doing Ultra Man. Remember that one!!!!

I've learned not to get my hopes up after T:RotF and G.I. Joe, but I hope this turns out cool. The one thing this news does do for me is make me wish I still had my old Voltron toys. I had the ones that came with the action figues that actually could sit in the lions. They were awesome. I'm sad now:(

This would translate perfectly.... and would help usher in a movie about the ThunderCats too. I really think that Ryan Reynolds should play lead in this movie.... and i hope that they dont do what was done to the Transfomrers.

This movie should be a 3 part FAntasy adventure epic about a man who is an ass-tro-naught and takes a mission to contact another planet... and gets cut off from earth in the process and finds himself in a insane WW2 lwith lazers type of "Saving Private Ryan" type of Battle. And in the process saves a kings offspring . Which gets him in the place of the hurt or fallen royal child. He assumes the mantle of "The Black Lion" because when he is presented to the King in his Earthly gear he is wearing black and the tears in his uniform are similar to the markings of the
Black Lion.

It seems that our beloved CBMs suffer from the same problems Bad Story and Character Development. Which is the basic essence of most movies......when you stop and think about it acting comes second if the story is great the acting only enhances the film but if the story sucks there is no amount of acting that can save a film prime example is Punisher War Zone.Ray Stevenson you couldnt ask for a better Punisher but the story was terrible and the directing was god awful.
Voltron should look real and tangible and if they make it campy then it will trully suck ass. It should have a great story and their characters should be as different as the cartoon. And as in the Voltron intro Peter Cullen should narrate it.

Ok Latino Review somehow gets first treatments of scripts to critique. Voltron has been on there for a while. They don't give out many A+ to the scripts that they receive and Voltron got an A+! From what I remember the guy basically said they took out all the lame americanized stuff and made it more like the Japanese version of Voltron. Cool.
