Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania wasn't exactly a big hit with critics (it's only the second MCU movie to be deemed "rotten" on Rotten Tomatoes), and a common thread in most of the negative reviews was the movie's shoddy VFX.
This is hardly the first time an MCU project has been criticized for appearing to cut corners on its CGI, but it seemed to stand out more in Quantumania because so much of the movie takes place in the FX-heavy Quantum Realm.
Now, a new report from Vulture indicates that some "shortcuts" were indeed taken.
According to several VFX artists who worked on the film and wish to remain anonymous, CGI-quality-control measures were subpar, partially due to "critical resources being diverted away to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever."
"Wakanda Forever took precedence," says one artist who has worked on several major MCU films. "It felt like the higher-up and supervisor roles were shifted around to put that on their plates and there was a smaller team working on Ant-Man. It was on the back burner — less of a pressing thing.
Maybe the director had an idea of what he wanted, but he wasn’t 100 percent clear. We had a rough environment that we were sticking a few main characters in. At that time, we weren’t told where the characters should be in that environment. We were just going with what felt right."
Marvel Studios has come under fire for allegedly overworking VFX artists and enforcing unrealistic deadlines in the past. The Captain Marvel sequel was recently pushed back by over 4 months to dedicate more time to post-production, so perhaps the powers that be are beginning to pay attention to the backlash?
