ANT-MAN AND THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA Actor Corey Stoll On The Divisive Reactions To M.O.D.O.K.

Corey Stoll reprised his Ant-Man 1 role for Quantuamnia, but Darren Cross has undergone quite a transformation. Now, the actor has weighed in on the divisive reception to his take on M.O.D.O.K.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania introduced M.O.D.O.K. to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the response from fans was decidedly mixed.

Peyton Reed's threequel reimagined the "Mechanized Organism Designed Only For Killing" as a being created by Kang from what was left of Ant-Man villain Darren Cross, aka Yellowjacket, who was zapped into the Quantum Realm at the end of the first film.

He survived as a giant head with baby limbs (for some reason) and became the Conqueror's lackey.

Though M.O.D.O.K. did resemble his comic book counterpart, some felt the character design may have been a little too faithful, and the VFX used to bring him to life has come in for a lot of criticism.

Actor Corey Stoll was asked about the divisive reaction to his take on M.O.D.O.K. during an interview with Variety, and had the following response.

"Well, I’m not online at all. I think these characters are very close to a lot of people’s hearts. Everybody’s trying to make this jump from a two-dimensional, static image on page to live action, and some things have to change. Jeff Loveness, who wrote the script, and Peyton and Paul made a very strong choice to retcon — is that the word? — this new reason for MODOK to be. I think it really works. It certainly works in the context of Darren’s arc."

Stoll, a comic book fan himself, also pointed out that vastly different versions of every character have always existed on the page.

"You know, the thing I always loved as a comic book fan was that there would be these radically different versions of the same characters. I was a big Batman fan growing up. Frank Miller’s 'The Dark Knight Returns' was this completely different character from 'Year One' or whatever. You don’t have to like everyone equally. There is no definitive any of these characters."

M.O.D.O.K. appeared to perish at the end of Quantumania after redeeming himself by turning on Kang, but there are already rumors that he will make his return at some point.

What did you guys make of M.O.D.O.K.? Drop us a comment down below.

@Toonstrack - I think most mature people understand it. But there's some people for whom liking comic books and superheroes is their entire personality and by acting as "purists" they feel they can claim ownership of these characters.

It certainly didn't work for Darren's arc (IMO)

It's not Stoll's fault though, but the writing and VFX were weak.

"Don't be a dick"?? Urgh..

@UniqNo - I hated MODOK, but it does work for his ark. I’d just tweak it a little.

@philinterrupted - I liked @IcePyke take on it..

Darren Cross

Then: "I'm the future of war!"

Now: "i'M nOt A d*CK!!!"

Terrible.

@UniqNo - he’s was the future of war until he got deformed. The damage that he went through really warped him.

@philinterrupted - If so, they really didn't need to turn Yellow jacket into MODOK for the sake of it. Agree to disagree
philinterrupted
philinterrupted - 2/26/2023, 9:11 AM
@UniqNo - if you’re gonna argue “need” I’d say they don’t need to do anything.

But I think it works fine.

No if you want argue the tone of the character, I think that just comes down to personal opinion.

Again I think it was fine if not flawed in the design and approach.

@philinterrupted - For Darren's arc, na, not in my opinion, if they made him George Tarleton with a new actor I might have disliked it less, but they wanted to do a callback to Yellowjacket/Darren who barely linked to how he was in the first movie. It didn't need to be him. Eh. To each his own.

@UniqNo - Apparently re-closinf the chapter on Darren was more important than mentioning anything about how Janet had the power to heal Ghost or even Ghost herself. I mean Janet is all "I've got seeeecrets" and at that point it couldn't have gotten worse. What the hell are you waiting for? Bill Murray's five minutes could have explained that instead of only being there to humiliate hank. Like, come on.
philinterrupted
philinterrupted - 2/26/2023, 10:19 AM
@LiteraryJoe - hank didn’t seem humiliated. He actually said he understood.

But I agree about her powers not being a thing.
LiteraryJoe
LiteraryJoe - 2/27/2023, 8:18 AM
@philinterrupted - Yeah, but I think that was Krylars intention, even if it didn't work on stubborn Hank who also hooked up with someone.
philinterrupted
philinterrupted - 2/27/2023, 11:09 AM
@LiteraryJoe - the characters intention is not the same as the movies representation of Hank. That just adds more to Krylar’s character development. He’s a douche.

It's frickin' MODOK people, he's always been a joke character, people are suddenly acting like he's as iconic as Doctor Doom or Magneto. Even the Wrecking Crew is more respected than him.

His name means "Mechanized Organism Designed Only for Killing" and he has a demon face (instead of looking like a Shark Boy & Lava Girl character). And yeah, he often is taken seriously in the comics.

You might not personally like the character, but these false equivalences are silly.

@Darkknight2149 - Obviously ANY villain can be made to be more edgy and menancing. Chip Zdarsky recently made Stilt-Man into more of a threat.

But HISTORICALLY, MODOK has been portrayed, written, and considered a silly and outrageous character by most writers and artists and has been relegated as one of the less-than-stellar villains like Stilt-Man, Porcupine, Mandrill, Hypno-Hustler, etc. My point being is that he's never been considered to be in the same league as the heavy hitters: Dr. Doom, Magneto, Ultron, Red Skull, Mandarin, Loki, etc, and people shouldn't get so bent out of shape over his portrayal in this movie as it would have been just as ridiculous even if they went with a more comic accurate version working for AIM and fighting Captain America or Iron Man.

"My point being is that he's never been considered to be in the same league as the heavy hitters: Dr. Doom, Magneto, Ultron, Red Skull, Mandarin, Loki, etc"

I disagree. In most of the comics and non-comedy animated shows I've seen, he's been right there next to those villains. In fact, he's basically the face of A.I.M. in the comics (like Ra's al Ghul to the League of Assassins) and was recently the main antagonist in the Avengers game.

@Darkknight2149 - So you look at these pictures and really think this is serious and intimidating? I mean... just look at that! He is just a giant floating head with little baby arms and legs and a butt rocket. That grim look he has here doesn't make him less of a joke, it makes him more of a joke. I have no idea how to take this absurd character serious.

I'm sorry, but your argument boils down to "Well, I personally don't like the character."
Drace24
Drace24 - 2/26/2023, 2:20 PM
@Darkknight2149 - I didn't say that and that's not even accurate. I have no problem with the character being ridiculous. He works well as a campy joke character. But that's the point: He is a joke character. Obviously.
I ask again: What about him is serious and intimidating? Is it the baby arms, the butt rocket or the fact that his name is an incorrect acronym?

MODOK was such an enigma because I really disliked the change of making him Darren Cross and not giving him MODOKs usual MO of running AIM but I also thought he was by far the most entertaining part of the movie. Any time he showed up on screen it was just the right amount of awkward and hilarious
SonOfAGif
SonOfAGif - 2/25/2023, 3:20 PM
@Asterisk - That's because AIM was used differently in Iron Man 3. So him running a "think tank" that doesn't exist anymore wouldn't work in the continuity.
Asterisk
Asterisk - 2/25/2023, 7:58 PM
@SonOfAGif - I mean it’s been like what a decade since we saw AIM? I’m sure they could have come back in more comic book accurate form in some capacity. But it didn’t really have to be AIM just some sort of a stick evil organization he can run, instead of being Kang’s No. 2

I enjoyed him as MODOK. People need to stop being so sensitive about a C list character. Now if he was just a regular guy in an iron man suit calling himself MODOK. Then fine. But ppl gotta chill
