ANT-MAN AND THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA Director Peyton Reed Says Threequel "Permanently" Changes The MCU

Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania director Peyton Reed teases the ramifications the movie will have on the wider MCU, while star Jonathan Majors shares his excitement to play big bad Kang the Conqueror...

At the San Diego Comic-Con this past Saturday, Marvel Studios revealed that we're now in the midst of The Multiverse Saga. Phase 5 will kick off next year with Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, and if the trailer shown to those in Hall H is any indication, it promises to be a game-changer.

As well as squaring off with M.O.D.O.K., the title heroes will do battle with a Kang the Conqueror Variant it's believed has set his sights on the Quantum Realm. Whether he's the Kang or simply one of many we'll see over the coming years remains to be seen, director Peyton Reed teased major fallout from his Ant-Man threequel during an interview with Access.

"Kicking off Phase 5 is really exciting for us, because we're the Ant-Man movies. It's our third movie. It's this trilogy now," he explained. "But things happen in this movie that are going to change the Marvel Cinematic Universe permanently. And it's fun for us that Scott Lang is at the center of that change."

In a separate interview with ET Canada, Kang himself, Jonathan Majors, shared his excitement to play the MCU's new big bad.

"It feels cool. You know, the whole thing is of cultural significance. And so, to be of titular significance, whatever that means, it's humbling actually," he said. "You know, you just want to get to work, you just want to see the script and start, you know? Start and fail and mess up and memorize the lines and do all the stuff I wanted to do since I was a little boy in Texas."

As well as appearing in this movie, we anticipate seeing a Kang Variant in Loki season 2. The show's first batch of episodes wrapped up with the God of Mischief arriving in a reality where he rules over the Time Variance Authority, so how these stories (and Kangs) all start linking up as we get deeper into Phase 5 promises to be a fun ride.

Marvel Studios took its time setting the stage for Thanos with brief cameos, but it feels like we'll be seeing a lot of Kang ahead of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars.

Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania arrives in theaters on February 17, 2023.

Ant Man has been arguably (and surprisingly)one of the most important people in the MCU as far of the directions it goes.

I actually love the Ant Man flicks. Won’t hear a bad word said about them. The cast is wonderful and proper feels like a family centric film

@HagridsHole1 - I'm still not a huge fan of the second one but I will defend the first one as one of my favorite MCU movies. A perfect balance of comedy, action and serious well done family drama. If this new one is more in that vein I'll probably love it just as much.

@Mrcool210 -

I think for me personally, the worst part of the second one was how Ghosts storyline was handled, but hopefully they’ll redeem her in Thunderbolts

@bkmeijer1 -

And I think that’s all that’s needed sometimes from a film. Doesn’t have to be overly engaging or connected. Can just sit back and relax and enjoy

@HagridsHole1 - exactly. Part of why I loved them was because they're so low-level, so I womder how Quantumania is gonna entertain me as the event-level it appears to be

Every movie now does as every kovie is pretty much an ensemble event of itself now, so this doesn't surprise.

I hope this movie introduces the Prime Kang though. Introducing a variant each time just lessens the impact in my opinion. Same was with the Thanos variant in Endgame. There was no emotional connection to him, so it felt less threatening.

Unfortunately the plot has leaked by the same guy who accurately leaked the plots for Eternals, NWH and MoM. And Kang gets shafted and the status quo seems to change very little by the end. How many [frick]ing movies do we need of Scott and his friends getting stuck in the [frick]ing quantum realm. There are so many comics to pull stories from that it really shouldn't be this difficult to do something new.

Pretty much this. It sounds really underwhelming, I skipped Ant-Man 2 (Other than the post-credit) so I'm probably going to skip Ant-Man 3. Feels like a character assassination of Scott Lang - going from family orientated and lacking an ego to being ego driven and neglecting his family. No interest in seeing that.

Kang fighting his variants and getting beaten for the second time is a bit pathetic also for your main villain of the more recent saga. Feels like Kang will just be a distraction so they can blindside most fans when an Incursion hits at the end of Kang Dynasty and they need to spend Secret Wars trying to solve it. The only way to judge Kang is via his variants and so far they've been incompetent morons who monologue and then get killed or beaten and they have failed to acknowledge the elephant in the room that 'He who remains' Kang removed free will from the MCU so none of the characters actions were done by them.

The SDCC panel was definitely extremely reactionary to the poor reception of Thor L&T. Phase 4 was announced as Black Widow to Fantastic Four, but now they've split Phase 4 in order to try and claim that they've moved past that terrible phase and things will be better.

Every trailer portrayed itself as serious despite the high likelihood of being similar in tone to Thor L&T which they put the most budget into so clearly felt would be what the audience wanted. It does not bode well for what is now 'Phase 5'.

Any changes they hope to make would be implemented potentially by late Phase 6, maybe in time to salvage The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars - but at the moment Phase 4 was a failure and Phase 5 looks like it'll have a mixed reception.
