ANT-MAN AND THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA Writer Says Cut Kang Backstory Is Being Saved For AVENGERS: THE KANG DYNASTY

Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania writer Jeff Loveness has revealed some of the threequel's deleted scenes, including more backstory for Kang the Conqueror and a handful of big moments with M.O.D.O.K.!

Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania is Phase 5's opening chapter and a movie that introduces us to Kang the Conqueror. He's not the first Kang Variant we've met in the MCU (that would be Loki's He Who Remains), but this specific villain is who we anticipated being the shared world's new big bad.

Things didn't exactly play out that way, but a mid-credits scene introduced us to an endless number of Kangs, including Immortus, Rama-Tut, and a character based on Scarlet Centurion.

That's great and all, but it's not hard to see why many fans walked away from the movie unsatisfied, especially as the threequel provided little to no insights into Kang's past and how he'll factor into the Multiverse Saga. Talking to Vital Thrills, Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania writer Jeff Loveness confirmed a lot of material ended up on the cutting room floor.

"Lots of stuff [was deleted]. One in particular, there’s a little more Kang backstory that I think is probably better served for 'Avengers," he explains. "Where he’s going, where he’s been, all that kind of stuff."

On the plus side, that likely means Avengers: The Kang Dynasty will provide some long-overdue answers about the time-travelling baddie. Loveness would know considering the fact he's writing it, and he'd go on to tease additional deleted scenes revolving around Corey Stoll's divisive M.O.D.O.K.

"My favorite deleted scene is the one with me! I got killed by M.O.D.O.K. It was my debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe! There were many scenes. There’s one with Michelle Pfeiffer just berating him. There’s a lot of just like him being broken up along the course of the movie that leads to his redemption later. But some of that got cut out."

"But yeah, I back-talked to MODOK and he blows me up with his little crystal head laser," Loveness adds. "That’s the scene I want at the front of the movie. I want that on the poster."

Marvel Studios has become increasingly stingy with deleted scenes in recent years, so it remains to be seen how much, if any, of what Loveness is talking about we actually get to see.

Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania is currently playing in theaters.

Honestly, without those credits scenes and the general knowledge going in that he'd be the main bad guy of the multiverse saga, you really wouldn't know this guy was being built up for the next avengers movie.

@Origame - you could say the same about Loki and Thanos too.
Origame
Origame - 3/1/2023, 8:09 AM
@thewanderer - ...no you can't.

Loki wasn't the main villain like Thanos or Kang. He was just a villain.

As for Thanos, we only ever got glimpses of him until infinity war. And those glimpses painted a massive picture of his presence. Starting in avengers, we learn he was the mastermind behind the loki invasion with that just being part of his plan. And since loki was clearly afraid of the mere mention of Thanos, and loki required the avengers to form in order to beat him, that proved his power. Then when he did show up, he beat everyone.

Kang shows up and loses to ants

@Origame - A SINGULAR Kang showed up and lost to ants, but also, the movie says he'll be back after the credits, you now have a writer saying we're getting more of his backstory in Avengers, and based on rumors of him becoming the beyonder, that probably happens when he gets sucked into the multiversal power core.

Everyone who says he was defeated, I believe, are wrong. I think he was created. Like you argue Lang saved the universe, well this movie was his family completely [frick]ing it.
Origame
Origame - 3/1/2023, 8:56 AM
@SATW42 - a singular Kang that was apparently a threat to the whole council of kangs. And he lost to ants. I really don't see how he's gonna stand a chance against Thor, captain marvel, scarlet witch, or Dr strange let alone a new avengers team.

As for the beyonder, that's still just a rumor and even then she hulk can just enter the writers room and convince them it's better he's a regular kang.

thewanderer - 3/1/2023, 9:03 AM
@Origame - When we first met Loki, we had no idea he'd become the character he is today.

As for Thanos, this applies every bit as much as Kang "Honestly, without those credits scenes and the general knowledge going in that he'd be the main bad guy".

thewanderer - 3/1/2023, 9:05 AM
@SATW42 - I think you are right in the idea that the events of the movie CREATED Kang the Conquerer.

If I had one complaint about the movie, it would be that they showed that in the end rather than Scott just having the dreaded feeling.
SATW42
SATW42 - 3/1/2023, 9:10 AM
@Origame - cute, but the show actually established she can't do that anymore.
Origame
Origame - 3/1/2023, 9:13 AM
@thewanderer - again, loki was never a main threat like Thanos, and that's what I'm talking about with Kang.

And Thanos actually did have an impact without those credits scenes. In avengers, we see loki is genuinely afraid of the man behind the curtain, and loki ended up as a threat to the avengers. And the idea of the man behind the chitauri led to iron man having ptsd and creating ultron as a response. On top of that, we physically see Thanos in guardians of the galaxy, where his lackey ended up threatening an entire planet of superheroes.

Kang loses to ants.

@SATW42 - fine. But you still have Thor, captain marvel, Dr strange, and scarlet witch. Not to mention love, who has the power of eternity.
Origame
Origame - 3/1/2023, 9:18 AM
@SATW42 - what's cute is how you only picked out the part you could argue against. Even you can't justify him as a threat to any of the heavy hitters of the mcu 🤣

@Origame - "And Kang actually did have an impact without those credits scenes. In Quantumania, we see the entire Quantum Realm is genuinely afraid of the man behind the curtain".

Fixed it for you.
Origame
Origame - 3/1/2023, 10:16 AM
@thewanderer - ...then he lost to ants.

We had no real sense of scaling for the citizens of the quantum realm. From the perspective of us, they didn't even have anything beyond medieval tech prior to Kang showing up. And all Kang assembled was beaten by ants.

Meanwhile loki, the guy the avengers needed to form in order to defeat, was afraid of Thanos.
thewanderer
thewanderer - 3/1/2023, 10:21 AM
@Origame - You dance around the point here. Yes, the Quantum Realm isn't high tech, and even Kang was limited in what he could do tech wise.

Imagine Kang when he gets out and ISN'T limited by his surroundings?
Origame
Origame - 3/1/2023, 10:37 AM
@thewanderer - 1) my point about them not being high tech is that they aren't much of a challenge to someone with basically an iron man suit. It's like bringing a machine gun to fight vikings. You're saying he was limited tech wise, yet it's flat out stated in the movie his suit was so advanced by itself that's what allowed him to take over and develop more tech. Otherwise, he would've just remained stuck. Hell it required Janet to even get access to his suit.

And yeah, imagine if he wasn't limited by his surroundings. He might just surpass ant level 🤣
thewanderer
thewanderer - 3/1/2023, 10:54 AM
@Origame - yes, a swarm of technology advanced ants physically twice his size that attack him as his tech is damaged and failing.

Tell us you didn't pay attention to the movie without telling us you didn't pay attention to the movie.

Toonstrack
Toonstrack - 3/1/2023, 11:11 AM
@Origame - yes you would lol. He straight up said he'd killed avengers and conquered world. The end of the movie telegraphs that he's not dead for good.
Origame
Origame - 3/1/2023, 11:31 AM
@thewanderer - in terms of tech, they didn't really use any. They just swarmed him. And so what if they were twice his size? He's gonna be up against people like Thor, who regularly fights monsters several times his size as fodder enemies. Captain marvel takes on entire fleets of battle ships by just flying through them. Dr. Strange can instantly send them to various parts of the planet/universe or throw them into the mirror dimension. And scarlet witch can turn them all to dust instantly.
Origame
Origame - 3/1/2023, 11:32 AM
@Toonstrack - never heard of the phrase, actions speak louder than words? I don't care if he claims to have killed avengers when he loses to ants.
Origame
Origame - 3/1/2023, 11:42 AM
@Toonstrack - also, that Kang objectively died. They even confirmed it in that scene. Those are his variants. And if you are taking Kang at his word, all those Kang variants feared the one ant man killed. Even they aren't a threat.
thewanderer
thewanderer - 3/1/2023, 12:06 PM
@Origame - the ants did have tech that they used.

Ironically, while searching for that clip on Youtube, I was bombarded with tons of videos of real life ant swarms overpowering more powerful bugs/animals.

Don't underestimate the power of a swarm working in unison.

Here's a fun video of Ant's taking down snakes, scorpions, and tarantulas

@Origame - "what's cute is how you only picked out the part you could argue against. Even you can't justify him as a threat to any of the heavy hitters of the mcu 🤣"

Because I already answered that with him not actually being gone. I have NO idea what he's going to be or how he's going to come out of that power source. He won't be the same Kang that, "lost to ants"
dagenspear
dagenspear - 3/1/2023, 1:57 PM
@SATW42 - You believe they're wrong. That doesn't change that the movie doesn't give much in the way of it.
Origame
Origame - 3/1/2023, 2:38 PM
@thewanderer - 1) didn't use the tech in the fight.

2) yes, swarms can be powerful. But for a Thanos level threat he needs to bare minimum be able to take on Thor. This is what a swarm does to Thor.

Origame
Origame - 3/1/2023, 2:39 PM
@SATW42 - except he is gone. Those aren't the same Kang. They're different variants of him. In fact it's mentioned the reason the Kang we saw was banished is because the council feared him, implying the council is less threatening than the Kang that lost to ants.
SATW42
SATW42 - 3/1/2023, 4:32 PM
@Origame - You say we feared Thanos because Loki feared Thanos, but um, Loki fears Kang too in that second post credit scene he's terrified and it's not just a facial expression, it's dialogue.

Also, did you watch the Loki finale. He who remains says if they kill him "an infinite amount of me start another multiversal war and I just end up right back here anyway. Reincarnation, baby."

Multiversal wars caused by Kang are a cycle, an inevitability. The Kangs are going to mess the entire multiverse up, which is already established they have the power to do, and by my guess Kang from Quantumania will emerge as the Beyonder, destroy all of them, and create Battle World and then we have Secret Wars, and we all know that story.
Origame
Origame - 3/1/2023, 5:00 PM
@SATW42 - 1) yeah, but that was loki from back when he was awesome. Requiring the entire avengers roster to work together to beat him. Taking on Thor and captain america in direct combat. Current loki is getting beat by body positivity cop.

2) that makes him about as threatening as a mouse infestation.

3) and scarlet witch already f@#$ed up the multiverse by herself. Hell, she had to be convinced to stop. How's Kang supposed to deal with that?

4) Kang as beyonder is still a rumor. But even if not, love has the power of eternity.
SATW42
SATW42 - 3/1/2023, 6:41 PM
@Origame - so do you just hate comic book stories in general? By your logic scarlet witch’s existence means nothing is a threat ever.

Like even if a different thanos comes back with the stones, welp, Wanda is the scarlet witch now, so doesn’t matter.

Love has the power of eternity so there are no threats.

Guess Disney should pack it up and marvel should shut its doors.

Disney too.

Fast and furious while we’re at it. Dom is basically a superhero with the power of family and no one dies, no stakes.

Like just go watch Cameron movies and pitch perfect and go away then
Origame
Origame - 3/1/2023, 7:00 PM
@SATW42 - 1) do you read comics ever? Because they are constantly upping the anti.

2) well, good thing they didn't make Wanda the scarlet witch by the time Thanos came around. Because, you know, THAT WOULD MAKE HIM LESS OF A THREAT. Not that he even needs scarlet witch to take him out. Thor, captain marvel, or Dr strange can take him out pretty easily. You know, since he lost to ants 🤣

3) ...yeah. I've been saying that was dumb just giving a child the power of eternity. Like, that's basically an infinity gauntlet as a powerset.

4) ...you literally just gave a genuine complaint people have had about the fast and furious movies. Especially with them bringing back Han and now Giselle.

5) you can f@#$ right off with that. If you genuinely have a problem with what I'm saying about a f@#$ing movie, the doors right there.

Good luck trying to get the general audience to come see an Avengers movie that has Kang....again....but not RDJ, Evans, Renner and ScarJo.

Figured as much. If the original ending had Kang escape, than I'm pretty sure there are plans for him to return. And that most likely means more background stuff too

@bkmeijer1 -
Original ending, he was just trapped in the Quantum Realm with Ant-Man and Hope while Cassie had escaped and was presumably working to free her father - which would release this variant of Kang upon the world.
