ANT-MAN AND THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA Writer Suggests Kang The Conqueror May Have Been Correct (Exclusive)

Following the release of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, we were able to sit down with Emmy-winning screenwriter Jeff Loveness to get all the details on that wild ending and the ominous post-credits!

As Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania continues its stellar run at the global box office, we were granted an exclusive opportunity to sit down with Emmy Award-winning screenwriter Jeff Loveness to get all the inside scoop on that explosive ending as well as the über-ominous post-credits sequence that introduced the villains of the next Avengers movie.

With rumors circulating that Quantumania reshot its ending a few months prior to its February release, Loveness seemingly confirmed to us that the theatrical ending was indeed his planned ending since it actually changed the status quo. He explains,

"We certainly, pitched out and we gamed out how many versions of how to do the ending and we certainly went through our paces with that. I think, ultimately, I see the thoughts on the internet about stranding people and killing people, but, at the end of the day, it would have just been the same ending as Ant-Man 2. It's like, ‘Oh, Scott is trapped in the Quantum Realm again,’ and then, it would have been the same exit point as Endgame where, ‘Oh, he's in the Quantum Realm, and now he's out of the Quantum Realm.’

Hey, comic book fans are like sports fans, it's gonna get messy, and there's going to be opinions, but I loved where we landed because it's a real Hero's Journey of the guy who was carefree and thought his hero days were done, having to really bite the bullet, be willing to sacrifice himself and then get saved by his family and then, saved by his daughter, realizing that he's not as alone as he thought he was, you don't have to throw yourself on the grenade if you've got help.

The guy who starts out so carefree is now burdened with this dread at the end, and now he's going to be almost the Paul Revere of the multiverse, I think. He's the only one who knows about Kang, and he's not quite sure what's going to happen and I think going forward, we'll see, but I think it's very interesting with this ending that we went with. The guy who saved the universe in Endgame may potentially be the guy who [frick]s the universe now, multiverse actually."

While the film did wrap up in a relatively happy manner, with Scott Lang reunited with his family, the post-credits teased an even bigger incoming threat: The Council of Kangs!

Loveness did confirm they'll be led by Immortus, Rama-Tut, and Scarlet Centurion, and while he couldn't say much more, it sure sounds like The Council is going to have their sets sight on the Ant-Man family, as well as several other Marvel heroes that have already tampered with the multiverse, namely Spider-Man and Doctor Strange. When asked if they'll want revenge, he continues,

"It certainly seems that way, or the universe that killed him. That, to me, it's like the mafia, or it's like the Axis powers or something like that. It's like, we can kill him, but if someone else goes after him, okay, that's gonna threaten all of us. If someone out there is powerful enough to kill the guy that even we couldn't kill or the guy we were so afraid of that we had to overpower and get rid of. That's a big problem.

And it just ties into the other, in that credit scene, it says, ‘They're beginning to touch the multiverse.’ That's a very veiled shot across the bow, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, they have not gone unnoticed in their tampering with the multiverse. So, I think now, the threat is big enough that they've got to move on this pesky universe that's messing up their empire, and, just in the general sense, I think it's very fun to make Kang the Conqueror, correct.

When you go back to watch his interrogation of Scott, he's not lying, and he says, he's not a liar. He was the only shot our universe had against that overwhelming power, and now that guy is gone. So, good luck, Hawkeye! Good luck!"

If you still haven't seen the film, make sure to check out our review HERE!

I miss the days when movies would come out and you actually felt something and took a week to process it, nowadays a movie comes out and the writers blabbing about it immediately next day about all the different things he could’ve done or didnt do.. it takes me out and reminds this was designed by people who dont know what they’re doing

@Matchesz - I miss not having trouble getting up my porch steps. But, here we are.

@philinterrupted - Who says they should have to? If you don't like seeing comments you disagree with, maybe you can not go on the internet?

@dagenspear - I never said I had a problem. Merely throwing out a suggestion so he didn’t have to see people make comments about movies after they come out.

You clearly have a reading comprehension problem.

@Matchesz - think it's also on interviewers and such, because they're asking those questions.

I could think of far more interesting questions that don't go into story or future plans. But yet, that's what only matters these days.

@OriginalGusto1 - I miss the days where a fella could get get all hopped up on acid and grain alcohol and go careening around the neighborhood loading up the trunk with stolen lawn animals and garden gnomes then make a mad dash for the Mexican border knocking over liquor stores and pharmacies along the way burning through the desert in a drug-fueled delirium at 120 mph in the dead of night just to meet up with "Uncle Pablo" and trade him the lawn animals and garden gnomes for safe passage across the border all because you were sick of f**king Taco Bell and wanted some REAL Mexican food only to have "Uncle Pablo" screw you over and set you up to be caught by the Federales just as you were about to sink your teeth a REAL 7-layer burrito resulting in you spending the next 2 1/2 years in a Mexican prison. But here we are.

@StSteven - I know. Reminds me of that time I tried to make my own Iron Man armor outta my dad's old PBR cans, parts from his grill, and, probably not the best idea...multiple cans of compressed propane I jacked outta my neighbor's garages. But, there I was...On top of my parent's garage. Ready to fly. I, sadly, did not. I didn't fly anywhere. I did, however, plummet about 9 feet. Painfully. There I waited, splayed out, in an insane amount of incredibly sharp aluminum, propane burns everywhere, and...still on going...agony. Waiting for that ambulance. To this day, my junk...gone. Scars...everywhere. I regret nothing.

@OriginalGusto1 - See? That's hat I'm sayin'. Too many regulations and safety measures getting in the way of what we should be able to do. Like if I wanted to take off the safety guard on my table saw and accidentally saw off my left thumb when I was in high school and have my mom drive me to the hospital where it was surgically reattached and then end up with a thumb that had sensation but couldn't feel pain on the bottom side which totally impressed chicks when I was in college because I could stick needles in it or hold a lighter under it, well damn it I miss those days!. Now they just "idiot-proof" everything and it takes real effort for a good tax-paying' Murican to cut off whatever appendage they want. But here we are.

@StSteven - [frick]in' OSHA, man! I suppose the Unions had a hand or two in it, as well.
StSteven
StSteven - 3/7/2023, 9:17 PM
@OriginalGusto1 - You're God damned right they did! F**king OSHA, the Unions, the NRA, PETA, NMBLA, SETI, they ALL had a hand in this shit because this is a f**king conspiracy! I mean, what kind of country do we live in where they leave the option to remove the safety equipment on dangerous tools up to the consumer? Huh?!?

I have to go trim the weeds in my yard now and did anyone stop me for removing the guard from my weed whacker? NOPE! So I may or may not come back with my ankles fully intact. But if they end up looking like raw hamburger meat that's on them!

OriginalGusto1 - 3/7/2023, 9:44 PM
@StSteven - I can't believe you maintain a yard, and yet have time to think this out so very thoroughly.
StSteven
StSteven - 3/8/2023, 1:27 PM
@OriginalGusto1 - Yeah, well, see my comment in the other thread. And yeah, I do have a yard and a pool and I find the time to take care of all of it. Everyone else in my neighborhood uses a lawn service but I grew up having to do all the hardwood (oldest kid) so I made the mistake of telling my wife when we bought our house that we didn't need a service and I could do all the work myself, so we got all the yard tools. And then more tools. And then more tools. And then when I found myself having to do the yard in the middle of a Texas summer I understood why everyone around here has a service, but I was in too far over my head to turn back at that point (at least according to my wife).

But to go back to your point my lawnmower is battery powered and it has headlights so I usually mow in the evenings or at night, especially in the summer. Plus we have a street light in front of our house and there are baseball fields across the street that often have their lights on, so it's pretty easy to work outside in the evenings and at night (as long as it doesn't get too late). That's probably WAY more info than you wanted butI hope that clears it up.

As for "think this out so very thoroughly", I think you're giving me way too much credit, especially on the "thinking" part. It's more like verbal diarrhea that comes spewing out after drinking while doing yard work.

OriginalGusto1 - 3/8/2023, 7:29 PM
@StSteven - I think you're giving yourself too little credit. You seem quite thought driven. That's [frick]in' admirable.
StSteven
StSteven - 3/8/2023, 10:09 PM
@OriginalGusto1 - Eh, I just have a certain sort of sense of humor that it's like "either you get it, or you don't". Kind of like how Stephen Colbert portrayed himself for 9 years as an extreme right-wing pundit and it was all just a joke, however there were many people who actually believed that he was that person (in fact it's taken him a couple of years afterward to shake all that off in his new gig).

So I'll sometimes post serious stuff (like where I see the MCU going with their street level characters), and other times just post stuff that (I hope) is just the other side of ridiculous that most folks know it's a joke (most folks).

Either way, I'm just trying to entertain myself and I hope I entertain some other people in the process. Cheers!

OriginalGusto1 - 3/8/2023, 10:20 PM
@StSteven - Well, I like you. I'm not kidding. But, that's gonna leave you empty in the end.
StSteven
StSteven - 3/8/2023, 10:48 PM
@OriginalGusto1 - Well, I like you as well, and it seems like we get along pretty well (despite some recent bumps along the road).

When I said that I was just trying to entertain myself with my humorous/not-humorous posts that wasn't really true. I actually REALLY enjoy conversations between myself and other CIVIL folks like yourself. As I mentioned earlier, I WFH and the rest of my team is pretty far away from me, so I don't have a whole lot of opportunities for conversations about stuff that I'm I'm interested in (my wife and daughters couldn't give a shit about the new episode of "Mando" tonight).

So I look to this site as a place where I can geek out with other like-minded individuals in between doing work-work and house-work. Best!

OriginalGusto1 - 3/8/2023, 10:53 PM
@StSteven - It's fun, isn't it? You should have been here 8 or so years ago.
StSteven
StSteven - 3/8/2023, 11:28 PM
@OriginalGusto1 - Yeah. This is actually the only site where I'm an actual contributing member to the conversations, because despite the occasional nonsensical debates between parties that will obviously NEVER agree on a particular topic or viewpoint, overall there's pretty good discussion to be had here. And, like I said, when I ask my 7 year old daughter whether or not the new season of "Mando" should have included Grogu, she throws a stuffed Peppa Pig plushy at me (then my 3 1/2 year old throws a Bluey plushy at me and laughs). *sigh*

The end of the movie is kind of weird and hopefully had a deeper meaning not yet revealed. The pedestrians walking on the street at the end recognize him and then it's almost as if they realize something, and their facial expressions change.

I don't think Scott is in the 616.

@Mrtoke - I agree that that is where they will probably settle it but that represents such an incredibly stupid way to end a quasi-cliffhanger to Kang Dynasty. My buddy….who knows FAR more about the canon than I could ever hope to (guy is seriously a walking encyclopedia of the genre) happens to agree with you, for what it’s worth

@HydraB0b -
The ending is intended as a tacked on goofy scene that also acts as foreshadowing the next movie and creating an element of discussion. It was not part of the original script. It was rushed and filmed in January as part of reshoots to alter the movies tone to be more light hearted. The extras turning around was probably meant to mirror Spider-man 3 where he's doing the goofy dance down the street and people stare at him.

A movie should not rely on its ending being an afterthought that will only make sense IF it's followed up upon. We've already had repeated endings in the MCU that have had set-up that was never explored, so I doubt this will be any different.
