ANT-MAN AND THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA's Shrinking Box Office Returns May Signify Franchise's Lowest Earner

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania opened big, but its shrinking box office returns over the past couple of weeks may signify the lowest earner in the Ant-Man franchise...

After a strong opening, Marvel Studios' Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania suffered the biggest second-week drop in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the Peyton Reed-directed threequel has taken another hit in its third weekend on general release.

Marvel's first Phase 5 movie took in $12 million at the domestic box office - a 61% decline from last weekend. As things stand, Ant-Man 3 could finish its run with a global total of just under or over $500 million, which would make it the lowest earner of the franchise.

Some analysts have been trying to put a positive spin on these numbers, but there's no getting away from how disappointing this performance is. Many major studio blockbusters tend to be critic proof, but that hasn't proven to be the case for the MCU films (Eternals also underperformed), with negative reviews and poor word-of-mouth clearly impacting ticket sales.

Much better news for MGM's Creed III, which has punched its way to $58.6 million domestic and has passed $100M worldwide, taking the No. 1 spot from Quantumania.

Have you been to see Ant-Man 3? If so, are you surprised by this update? Drop us a comment down below.

In Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Super-Hero partners Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) and Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) return to continue their adventures as Ant-Man and the Wasp. Together, with Hope’s parents Janet van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer) and Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), and Scott’s daughter Cassie Lang (Kathryn Newton), the family finds themselves exploring the Quantum Realm, interacting with strange new creatures and embarking on an adventure that will push them beyond the limits of what they thought possible.

Directed by Peyton Reed and produced by Kevin Feige and Stephen Broussard, Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania also stars Jonathan Majors as Kang, David Dastmalchian as Veb, Katy O'Brian as Jentorra, William Jackson Harper as Quaz and Bill Murray as Lord Krylar.

haven't and can't see it as yet but I find this, outside of the vfx, all very odd. Other than that what is the hangup cause something clearly was off the mark ?

@JDL - It was just meh, the writing was bad abd dumb, the plot was boring and uninspired. It treated interesting things in such a superficial way that it made them boring. I didn't hate it but it's the one mcu film that left me feeling nothing.

This movie already made more money than Black Widow and the Eternals. Also, this movie will make more than Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Why would anyone want to restore Snyder, the guy that destroyed the DCFU?

@DocSpock - what does that have anything to do with ant man losing money?

@TopBoy -

Well, let's compare.

Over 20 of the MCU movies have been either huge hits, well received, or both.

ALL of the Synderverse movies unperformed & most were panned by crtics & fans alike, Except for Wonder Woman & Aquaman(Fluke).

Yes Eternals & Ant-Man 3 were average movies & underperformed. Thor 4 was terrible. Spider-Man NWH & Dr. Strange MoM did very well.

The MCU isn't sunk by any means.

The thing for me is I am much more a DC comics fan. Which is why I hate Snyder for his awful take on those characters that killed the whole lot into a reboot.

@DocSpock - "ALL of the Synderverse movies unperformed"

Thats not true.

- SS made 746 million without China, which was outstanding back in the day.
- Wonder Woman made excellent 822 million. Huge win for DC. Even Feige said he wasnt brave enough to make a female lead CBM and that WW was a door opener.
- Aquaman crushed it with a billie.

Too bad you can't read. I said they all underperformed EXCEPT for Wonder Woman & Aquaman.

@DocSpock - Snyder's movies aren't deserving of more, I think similarly.

However, it doesn't make the MCU not poor at this point. MoM/Quantumania I think weren't well written, not just what I call average. NWH, to me was more a middle ground, but had some really solid character writing that helped the movie come off better than a lot of what it did.

Snyder was right!

“Flavor of the week” Ant-man is a complete and total flop both critically and financially.

On track to lose Marvel a good $50-$100 million. Kang’s big screen debut will forever be remembered as a failure. And Marvel built their whole phase 4-6 on his name.

@TopBoy - That’s really not how people talk about characters.
