ANT-MAN & THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA Writer On Whether Negative Reviews Will Alter His Plans For THE KANG DYNASTY

Critics did not take to Marvel Studios' Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, but will the movie's negative reception impact writer Jeff Loveness' plans for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty?

Despite some positive early buzz from the premiere (never put too much stock in social media reactions!), Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania received a (mostly) negative response from critics, and ultimately became the second MCU movie to slip down to "rotten" status on Rotten Tomatoes after 2021's Eternals.

While general audiences did initially seem to be embracing Marvel Studios' first Phase 5 film, it suffered a massive second-week drop at the domestic box office, and Creed III may end up landing a knockout blow the MCU threequel will find it difficult to recover from.

Writer Jeff Loveness has previously admitted that the reviews took him by surprise, and the movie's chilly reception is something he did take to heart. Now, we're left to wonder if the criticisms that have been aimed at Quantumania will impact his ideas for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.

Loveness was asked that very question during an appearance on the Phase Zero podcast.

"Yeah, I mean, I'm in the process of that right now," he said of the work-in-progress script. "So certainly it's been a wild couple of weeks to be writing the biggest movie of all time and to see yourself portrayed in this way."

"But, yeah, it's a mix of both, man," he added. "'Cause I really do like the movie. And you know, making movies is a fight and you always look at your own work and you see the flaws or you see ways to do it better, but man, writing Jonathan Majors was like the thrill of a lifetime. And getting that M.O.D.O.K stuff in there was such a joy ... It could not have been a more thrilling experience."

Loveness recently said that seeing the movie with an audience for the first time cheered him up, as he realized that a lot of people were responding more positively than the reviews would suggest.

"It's been really charming and really heart-warming to see it find its audience, and the people who get it, really get it. It's kind of fun to have a movie people have strong opinions on ... I had to get used to that, it's sort of a whack to the face, but I also feel like I've grown up a little bit. I'm alive, and it's like, I'm very excited to write the next one. It's not affecting the work right now, but we'll see if my badge has been locked out of Disney. We'll see if I can get into the building."

Not every big studio blockbuster can be a 5-star banger, so Loveness is right not to allow the negativity surrounding Ant-Man 3 influence him too much. At the same time, he might be wise not to completely brush off the criticisms and take a look at what could be improved upon.

I genuinely don't know what all the noise was about. Watched it and had a great time. Will watch it again once it drops on D+.

@Fogs - same. Even with my complaints it’s like a 7/10 to me

@Fogs - EVERYONE I spoke to enjoyed it.It's only online where it gets hate. Compare how many times people complain online to how many times people praise something, and you will see that these online idiots just love to hate things online lol, it's sad that rather than find something the like, they would rather put down something they don't, but, this is why they will go nowhere in life.

@Fogs - Watched it and found dumb and lame, except for Kang.

@DarkeyeZ - Really? It's only online? Come on. Please don't tell me you actually think that.

My mom didn't like it either and she's what I'd distinctly call a casual audience member.

@dagenspear - Well, your prerogative.

The answer should be yes imo. But that also goes for positive reviews.

I'm fine with him writing what he likes (as that's what I'd do as well), but I think taking any feedback into consideration is a must to prevent your work from getting stale.

@bkmeijer1 - I think it's a fine line to walk, and in the end you have to stay mostly true to your story and vision.

For every change you make to make 1 fan happy, you're likely making a change that will make another fan unhappy.

@thewanderer - definitely true. Still, sometimes something better can come along you hadn't even thought of yourself. Or something that makes you realize something doesn't work as well. But yeah, it's a fine line.

@bkmeijer1 - yea, definitely listen to the feedback and take the good stuff that fits/improves your vision.

The writers of Civil War, Infinity War and Endgame wrote Thor: The Dark World. People need to calm down.

@PlusUltra - and the writers of the Ant-Man movies also helped on Winter Soldier.

@PlusUltra - Fair... I think Loveness was just unlucky that this movie got bad reviews when it was so widely reported that he'd also be writing the next Avengers. That said, the script was prob the biggest issue with Quantumania, at least imo.

@PlusUltra - yes, but they adjusted their work based on feedback.

@Origame - what exactly did they adjust?

@philinterrupted - for one thing, balancing comedy with the serious sh!t.

One of the criticisms of the dark world is its dark tone with comedy that sucked. So they worked on the comedy to work better as jokes while working well with the tone, and brought in James gunn to work on the dialogue for the guardians.
