ANT-MAN & THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA Writer Says Negative Reviews "Took Me By Surprise"

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania writer Jeff Loveness has addressed the movie's negative critical reception, admitting that the bad reviews completely took him by surprise...

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania was not well-received by critics (it's actually only the second MCU movie to drop to "rotten" status on Rotten Tomatoes after Eternals), and the reception was not something writer Jeff Loveness was prepared for.

While speaking to The Daily Beast about the threequel's (mostly) negative reviews, Loveness admitted that the critical drubbing came out of left field, and, understandably, he did not feel great about it.

“To be honest, those reviews took me by surprise. I was in a pretty low spot. Those were not good reviews, and I was like, ‘What the …?’”

“I’m really proud of what I wrote for Jonathan [Majors] and Michelle Pfeiffer,” Loveness continued. “I thought that was good stuff, you know? And so I was just despondent, and I was really sad about it.”

Loveness says attending a public screening of Quantumania during its opening weekend cheered him up a bit, as the audience reacted well to a lot of the jokes he had added to the script.

“I’m like, ‘Goddamn! No, [the reviews] are wrong! I’m right! MODOK is great!’” he added. “I’m pretty happy with it overall, and I think I learned how to take a punch this week. And now that I learned that it’s not too bad, I can just get on with making things.”

While it's true that cinemagoers did appear to be responding a lot more positively than critics at first, Ant-Man 3 recently suffered the biggest second-week box office drop for a Marvel Studios movie.

Comedy is completely subjective, of course, but one major criticism of Quantumania was that a lot of the humor simply failed to hit the mark.

“I just miss gags in movies that were unabashedly dumb,” he says of his goal with the film’s comedic elements. “I like movies that had big gags and weren’t trying to be super-grounded all the time. I think ‘grounded’ is the most overrated word in comedies … Like, I don’t give a shit. I wanna see movies that have jokes and funny characters and heightened situations.”

Loveness is currently working on the script for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, which, to be frank, a lot of fans are now just a little concerned about!

Maybe don't take the reviews personally and use them as a tool to improve? Idk, figured that was the whole point of critics (to provide CRITICISM).

Like, are you throwing this much of a fit over a poor grade in school, without trying to analyze why you did so poorly?

I'm really beginning to think the writers in Hollywood have the most sheltered lives.

@Origame - are you really comparing a 200millions movie with a school paper?
The guy spent months of work on this, years of back and forth with the studio and creative team. All that to hear “that movie is bad”.

@Usernametaken - I can only imagine how difficult it is to write a film for a massive studio. It's barely the writers work by the time all is said and done.

The studio already has notes, outlines, character moments, advertisements, actor screen time, etc.., before the writer even starts. Then they have to do their best to check off all those boxes while also trying to tell a good story. I don't envy them.

@Origame - Trust me. You have no idea what screenwriters go through. You just don’t.

@Usernametaken - the point is the same though. Yes, it's gonna be more harsh. But you still have the context it's trying to improve.

Hell, it's the critics, so it's not just them saying the movie sucks. They're giving reasons why it does.

@SuperBatCap1 - well you don't know what I go through.

@Origame - what an interesting reply. No context at all, the assumption is just “I might not know what writers go through but you don’t k is what I go through”. The implication is you’re some kind of Hollywood insider that deals with writers or something, or you’re like a cab driver and just deal with shitty people, but that doesn’t really make you an expert on movies. Just an absolutely bizarre response with absolutely no context to what you have been through and how that makes you qualified to speak on the subject. “Don’t worry about it, you don’t know me”

@Origame - you didn’t read the whole article

@SuperBatCap1 - So maybe they shouldn't defend the work and instead just shrug and say, "eh, studio interference."
SuperBatCap1
SuperBatCap1 - 2/28/2023, 2:32 PM
@dagenspear - it’s a bit more complex than that, so I feel as if they response would be disingenuous if he were to say that.

@SuperBatCap1 - Maybe. If so, maybe try and find a middle ground. I don't know for sure myself...

@Origame - right? i get that reviews can be disappointing, but you figure if the powers that be at disney ok'd the finished film, it's just critics opinions, which really, have never embraced comic movies...so maybe listen more to the comic community, and try to understand some of the viewpoints and opinions...and if the majority of us didn't like certain things, learn and move on, like you said

@SATW42 - the point is he can't know I don't know what the writer goes through because he knows nothing about my situation.

@philinterrupted - yes I did.

@SATW42 - actually I am.

@Origame - well this is a turn of events. We got a Hollywood insider here who regularly bashes Hollywood, wokeness and the elite. It’s either an act or you write those movies Gina Carano stars in now that make 800 dollars
Origame
Origame - 2/28/2023, 4:12 PM
@SATW42 - except I never said I was a Hollywood insider. Just that I'm a writer.

Unless you're telling me I can't possibly know the struggles of a big time Hollywood screenwriter who's guaranteed work on the next avengers movie. In which case I'll tell him this:

@RedFury - I agree with everything you said. I don’t envy them either
Origame
Origame - 2/28/2023, 7:27 PM
@RedFury - except he's completely believes the movie he made is a good one, despite what the critical response and box office are telling him.

Also, considering if a movie bombs it's on the director and studio, he's in a pretty cushy position.
SATW42
SATW42 - 3/1/2023, 12:43 AM
@Origame - so if you aren’t a Hollywood writer, you don’t have the same experience
Origame
Origame - 3/1/2023, 4:42 AM
@SATW42 - only if you're basically inhuman and can't possibly see the exact same experience just with a bunch less zeros on the paycheck.

Saying you are surprised by the negative reception is fine. Not listening to and learning from the feedback can be problematic in the future.

@mountainman - Yeah especially if he's the writer of the upcoming Kang Dynasty....sounds kinda worrying for us fans.

@mountainman -
"Not listening to and learning from the feedback can be problematic in the future."

It's worse than that, they are actively expressing the intent to continue to do this stuff. Even worse that they are making the movie based on what they want, not what the audience wants. Pushing the concepts they want rather than thinking about what the audience wants.

Kang Dynasty is honestly probably a skip for me at this point. I don't care for any of the newer characters and I'm barely even watching the films at this stage and this is just another nail in the coffin for the quality going forward.

@Scarilian - Blaming customers when your product fails isn't a good long term strategy. I imagine that the decision makers at Disney see their declining returns lately. Eventually, the buck will have to stop.
