Marvel Studios Insider Responds To ANT-MAN AND THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA's Giant-Man-Sized Box Office Drop

Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania suffered a huge second weekend drop at the North American box office, but one Marvel Studios insider suggests they're not too concerned about the movie's performance...

Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania is still tied with Eternals as Marvel Studios' lowest-rated movie on Rotten Tomatoes. While the response from fans has been a little kinder, word of mouth hasn't really done the threequel many favours based on its box office performance this weekend.

With an expected 69% drop, the latest Ant-Man movie made a disappointing $32.2 million in North America. Cocaine Bear overperformed with a $23.09 million debut, meaning the blockbuster only narrowly kept the #1 spot ahead of facing stiff competition from the likes of Creed III, Scream VI, and Shazam! Fury of the Gods

While far from a box office flop (it's already closing in on $400 million worldwide), Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania is close to being deemed a disappointment, especially as Phase 5's opening chapter.

However, Marvel Studios isn't too concerned!

One insider close to the project tells the trade, "Marvel takes something away from movie including Black Panther, including Avengers. I can say we’re incredibly proud of the film, Jonathan Majors does a fantastic job as Kang. It’s the movie we wanted to make. Box office is what it is. But it’s not going to stop people from going back to the theaters."

The MCU is essentially critic-proof, but Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania's performance needs to serve as something of a wake-up call to Marvel Studios, particularly after the lukewarm response to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Thor: Love and Thunder last year.

There are already reports Marvel Studios is limiting the number of movies and TV shows released each year, so that should help.

In our review of the movie, we concluded by saying: "Despite being an example of why a movie shouldn’t be shot almost entirely in The Volume, every time Jonathan Majors steps on screen as Kang, Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania is an epic tale to astonish and a monumental chapter in the Multiverse Saga."

Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania is currently playing in theaters.

@Highflyer - It's a tool too. I don't get why it is overused. I like Mando and Andor, but Andor feels more lived in because it has practical effects and actual locations uses for shots. Mando has somewhat of a balance, but in general you can't just make a total vfx movie right now...unless your name is Cameron.

Luke warm response to Doctor Strange!? It made like 995 million at the box office. Whether it was good or not that’s another thing, but it did way better than The Batman.

@John75 - yeah it’s kinda weird that some people consider Batman a success but not DS2. Movie made like 200m more
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 2/27/2023, 7:19 AM
@John75 - Considering the budget, the reshoots, and what they were expecting, it underperformed.

@Taonrey - The Batman budget; $180M, did $770M, MoM budget; over $300M not counting reshoots, made $990M.
Lets not even take into account MoM being an hour shorter (more shows).

@TheHumanSpider2 - they spent $300m on DS2 Jesus marvel

@TheHumanSpider2 - Nah the batman's covid delay and reshoots caused the movie to cost similar or as much as DS 2. Reported budget was 225 to 250 mil after reshoots. Baman did okay, what WB liked more was the critical reception because they needed a good movie.

DS 2 overperformed that year despite being in theaters for only 45 days, it did way better in retention and box office than Batman.

@Taonrey - NOT COUNTING RESHOOTS. And remember, 80% of the movies was reshoot.

@mastakilla39 - Nah, marketing costs for The Batman were pretty low, that movie made that money thanks to the word of mouth, and most important, the studio never expected the movie to make $1B.
MoM? Disney expected it to make Avengers numbers.

@John75 - DS2 actually made $955.8M, but you’re still right. They were both successful.

Bull Hockey. No way this was palnned to get even AoU money. CA:CW or CM otoh maybe. Got any real proof on that expectation ?

@JDL - You think Disney just throw close to $500M on a movie just to break even?
Taonrey
Taonrey - 2/27/2023, 3:45 PM
@TheHumanSpider2 - I mean that’s Disney fault, no one with half a brain expected DS to do avengers numbers
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 2/27/2023, 3:50 PM
@Taonrey - They did.
Remember, this is the same studio that considered AoU to be a "failure", and fired Whedon because of it.

Box office isn't gonna keep people from going back to the theaters? What?

I mean, technically it's an accurate statement, but the fact the numbers are low means people aren't going back to theaters my dude.

They're so desperate to save face they have to pretend not to know how the box office works.
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 2/27/2023, 7:21 AM
@Origame - 80% drop, people LITERALLY are not coming back to see the movie.
DarkeyeZ
DarkeyeZ - 2/27/2023, 7:37 AM
@Origame - what he means is that box office reports do not stop people from going and seeing movies. Normal people do not track these things. They will go see a movie based on trailers and word of mouth.
people will look at the comment sections of sites like this and mistakenly think that it reflects the real world...it doesn't. if you go out in public and ask people how well Ant-man is doing at the box office, most won't know what you mean while others will just say "I don't know".
Either way, it's good that they have this mentality. DC had the mentality of reacting to the box office rather than following their vision, and THAT is what results in a jumbled mess of a universe.

@ShimmyShimmyYA - Yeahup. People here still can't wrap their head around the fact that I live in an area where no one cares about any of these movies. Avatar, Marvel, DC. When endgame came out I literally had a coworker, who is only in his 40's had no idea marvel was as big as it was or that it made the money it did.

@Solarkalel85 - Its not "that bad", I think whats creating the negativity is the "disappointment" as many critics have said. Iron Man 2, Thor 2, and Eternals is still worst in my opinion.

But if you think AMQM is supposed to get you hyped for the next 2 cross-over films, than Marvel has failed miserably in setting that up.
