AVENGERS: ENDGAME VFX Reel Reveals That Sean Gunn's Kraglin Was Replaced With Groot In Final Battle

Sean Gunn played Kraglin in both of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies and he was supposed to reprise the role in Avengers: Endgame. However, a new VFX reel reveals that he was cut from the final battle...

Avengers: Endgame featured a lot of cameos, particularly in that epic final battle. We've known for a while that Sean Gunn's Kraglin was supposed to make his entrance on a space bike of sorts, but a newly released VFX reel confirms that wasn't the only place he was cut from.

As you can see at the 2:45 mark, Kraglin was supposed to line up with the rest of Earth's Mightiest Heroes before being digitally removed and replaced with Groot!

It appears as if the actor was meant to have a minor role during this sequence, but for reasons which aren't entirely clear, that all ended up on the cutting room floor. Perhaps the Russo Brothers simply wanted to streamline this fight? That, or James Gunn having different plans for the Ravager in the next Guardians of the Galaxy movie are definite possibilities.

Ultimately, it's a great shame this happened, especially when Sean Gunn plays Rocket on set! The Russos must have had their reasons, though, and we'll hopefully see more of the character down the line.

amazing before and after VFX shots from Avengers: Endgame!

Captain Marvel leads the charge as Earth's Mightiest Heroes hover over Titan II and attempt to formulate a plan to take down Thanos and bring the trillions who died back to life.

In this before and after shot, we see how the ship the team travelled in was enhanced with visual effects and outer space was added in the background. Sean Gunn is also replaced with Rocket!

This is a particularly interesting shot as we see how those effects surrounding Captain Marvel were created. We also see that some changes were made to the colour of the hero's costume.

With the rest of the Guardians of the Galaxy dead and gone, Rocket was given the spotlight and pretty much became an Avenger as a result. Needless to say, he looked awesome in this movie.

Captain Marvel's costume has undergone some changes since her first appearance in the 1990s, but this suit didn't last particularly long as the 2023 version was obviously completely redesigned.

The Guardians' ship hovers over Titan II, and this is a gorgeous piece of imagery. Moments later, Thanos would be decapitated by Thor and that would set the 2014 version on his quest for revenge.

These revealing before and after images show how the battle between the two versions of Captain America was created. It was an impressive sequence and clearly not that easy to put together.

The team blasts into outer space here as the imagery introduced in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 showing how spaceships essentially enter lightspeed made its return in Avengers: Endgame

Who would have guessed that Stormbreaker was entirely CGI? Then again, considering the fact that it passed right by Brie Larson's head, it's understandable that Marvel didn't want to risk anything!

Many thanks to Art of VFX for the images used in this post!

@TheDoctor1225 - His scene at the end of GOTG 2 was pretty emotional

Would have been awesome to see Wasp flying in the sky with Iron Man and the gang when the camera panned out at the flyers and runners.

I remember this from awhile back..
there was supposed to be a shot of Kraglin on his bike heading into battle. Would've been cool!

Kraglin does appear though. He's standing with the rest of the Ravagers in one shot.

@bcom - I never noticed him. Do you have a time stamp or screenshot? I assume it's in that quick shot with Howard the Duck?

@bcom - Exactly. He’s still in the movie.

Also, wasn’t Sean Gunn the motion capture actor for Groot anyway? Maybe he was supposed to be standing in for Groot.

@Rosraf - Yeah, he acted as physical stand in for Rocket and Groot. I think that shot was him just being Groot's reference.

IIRC, they shot a “sky battle” in the fight against Thanos’ army. I assume that means ravager ships, and maybe even the Benatar, were dogfighting with aircraft from Thanos’ army. I imagine that’s where Kraglin would’ve fit into the battle.

But the thing is Kraglin wasn’t in Infinity War, and with his change in appearance since the end of GOTGv2, I imagine just having him suddenly show up at the end of Endgame, in a prominent role without a previous scene to set him up, could have confused the audience.
