AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR - Here's Why That Awesome Group Shot From The Trailer Wasn't In The Movie

There were only a handful of scenes in the Avengers: Infinity War trailers which didn't make it into the movie but Joe and Anthony Russo have now explained why that amazing group shot wasn't included.

Even Marvel Studios movies aren't immune from reshoots and those have actually become standard for the vast majority of blockbusters these days anyway. However, Avengers: Infinity War not including that amazing shot of Captain America leading heroes like Black Panther and The Hulk into battle was conspicuous by its absence and fans couldn't help but wonder why it had been cut from the film.

Well, it turns out that it was never actually in the movie so The Hulk not being around doesn't actually mean the final act went through some sudden, unexpected changes near the end of production.

"We use all the material that we have at our disposal to create a trailer," Joe explains. "We look at the trailer as a very different experience than the movie, and I think audiences are so predictive now that you have to be very smart about how you craft a trailer because an audience can watch a trailer and basically tell you what’s gonna happen in the film. We consume too much content. So at our disposal are lots of different shots that aren’t in the movie that we can manipulate through CG to tell a story that we want to tell specifically for the purpose of the trailer and not for the film."
Anthony Russo then went on to confirm that the "money shot" from the trailers which got fans so massively excited was never in there to begin with and was created solely for use in marketing. "That shot that you’re referencing was never in the movie in the version that you saw. It was never even created for the movie in that version. It was literally created in that version for the trailer."

Something else fans noticed was missing from the movie was Thanos' memorable line about fun not being something one considers when balancing the universe and it seems that rather than that being misdirection, it was a case of a change being made during post-production to better serve the movie.

"That was a scripted line for the movie that we replaced with another line that we thought was a little more specific to the storytelling with Gamora," Joe explained when asked about that. "I think he used to say that on Nowhere to Gamora when he emerged from the Reality Cloak as the aether exposed him. I think we changed it to something that was a little more specific to the storytelling."

There were enough beautiful shots and lines in this movie that I don’t care that those shots and lines this article reference weren’t in the actual movie.

@EbonyMaw - Not really. Yeah they were all running together but Cap wasn't leading and there weren't any trees behind them

It was still an epic battle overall, with or without that shot. I do hope that the 30/40+ characters shot in Avengers 4 won't be cut though.

@Pantherpool - highly doubt they will cut the epic 40 character team up scene.

With all the recent trailers having shots and CGI that aren't in the final movie, you have to be suspect of everything nowadays. It's hard to say when it will go too far, because if though I agree the trailer is a different experience, it is essentially an advertisement for the movie. As such, it's supposed to help you make an informed decision as to whether or not to buy a ticket. So...by that logic what if Burger King or McDonalds showed a commercial with a burger that had three meat patties and fries, and you end up getting one meat pattie and no fries? Not going to fly right? But showing us a Hulk and giving us no Hulk is okay. Not saying it's the same thing exactly, but you know what I mean?

The shot of Panther leading his entire army as Okoye, Cap, Widow and Bucky run alongside him, with Banner not far behind and Sam and Rhodey flying above IS [frick]ING GREAT!

Just as good as the trailer shot imo.

Underrated shot: camera follows Panther and Cap from above as they both FUKCING BOOK IT towards the outriders and Cap passes Panther ON HIS LEFT. You could hear Cap running hard as hell.

Cap got revenge

Not gonna lie, when Thanos took everyone out in Wakanda, I said to myself "Nah, it'll be all good, that shot from the trailer still has to happen." And....it never did.

So, their strategy worked.

Despite the fanboy crying I'm fine with this.

The story was better for me when I didn't know what to expect from the plot.

And for anyone that may complain about the misdirection and confuse it with lying to the audience (newsflash, lying and misdirection are not synonymous), get a life. You sound sad and pathetic.

I like how they understand how todays audiences are. Trailer nowadays are analyzed to the point where people expect things to happen. Im fine with certain shots of the trailer not being in the movie. Good way to keep the audience surprised.

Speaking of trailers, I don't even know if they need to release any for Avengers 4. Infinity War made me want to buy a ticket immediately.
