AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Director Offers An Alternate Explanation For Banner's Little Problem - SPOILERS

Bruce Banner attempts to summon [SPOILER] several times in Infinity War but to no avail. Now, The Russos respond to the fan assumption that "the other guy" was simply too afraid to put in an appearance.

A few minor nitpicks aside, the majority of fans seemed very happy with Avengers: Infinity War, although one element did come in for quite a bit of backlash: The Hulk seemingly being too scared to join the fight after suffering an almighty beat-down at the hands of Thanos.

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR SPOILERS: The Location Of All Of The Infinity Stones And How They Come Into Play

Though that did certainly appear to be the case after Bruce Banner's repeated attempts to summon the "big, green asshole" were met with a resounding "NOOOOO", co-director Joe Russo has offered an alternate take on why Hulk was so hesitant to put in an appearance.

Here's what the filmmaker had to say on the matter during his appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast:

"I think people have interpreted it as Hulk’s scared. I mean, certainly, that’s not a — I don’t know that the Hulk is ever… he’s had his ass kicked before, and he loves a good fight. But I think that it’s really reflective of the journey from Ragnarok. Is that these two characters are constantly in conflict with each other over control. And I think that if the Hulk were to say why, it’d be [that] Banner only wants Hulk for fighting. I think he’s had enough of saving Banner’s ass.”

This does make more sense than The Green Goliath being afraid of something - even when that something is the mega-powerful Mad Titan - but still, Russo would probably have to admit that the movie doesn't really make that distinction clear enough.

At any rate, we'll no doubt get to see Hulk Vs. Thanos round 2 when Avengers 4 hits theaters next year, and something tells me their next showdown won't be quite so one-sided.

These two are definitely splitting up.

@L0RDbuckethead - That's what I'm thinking. Hulk goes to Sakaar where he felt happy. And Banner stays on Earth without any trouble.

It's honestly the perfect ending for those two.

@KWilly - I don't think he'll go back to Sakaar, but it could happen.

They need to be split into two entities in order to learn to work together to save the day. Classic Hulk storyline:

Well, that's different. Everyone was going with the "he had his ass handed to him" theory, LoL.

@ODanil - he never really denied it just said that’s not the sole reason I’m assuming hulk already doesn’t like he way he’s used and him getting his ass handed to him by thanos was the straw that broke the camels back and put genuine fear into him
DVonShakari
DVonShakari - 5/8/2018, 1:22 PM
@ODanil - yeah I was on that too. Although he got his ass handed to him, I never thought he was afraid but he just came to a realization that brute force and anger wouldn't be enough to stop Thanos. I figured that Hulk knew he'd need to rely more on Banner's intellect and Hulk didn't want Banner to have any more control.

Yeah it never made sense to me why people thought he was scared. I can't remember this is in the comics, and the hulk was trying to take on surter and abomination after getting floor multiple times.

To me, this is much more interesting. It means the hulk feels like he is just a weapon or beast used by the avengers. This is like what he said in thor about comparing him to banner and why he got so upset when thor says everyone hates him

To me, in avengers 4, banner should let the hulk take over completely (banner comes out once a day like in avengers earths mighiest heroes).

This isn't really much of a spoiler at this stage but I thought it's better to be sure, hence the headline change.

This makes sense but I think Hulk being scared makes more sense

Remember Hulk is like a 2 year old kid in IF. He got his ass beat down with a 5 hit combat in which triggered Thanos’s takedown attack which he selected X & Y on his Xbox controller.

But I do like Hulk being tired of being a weapon for Banner. My biggest criticism for the MCU is every film before Ragnarok, Hulk is a plot device & not a character. Hell in AOU they do everything they did with Hulk in Avengers

Ragnarok & IF has finally made Hulk a character & not a plot device to use in an action scene

@LEVITIKUZ - The thing about the hulk is though, you are right, but to my mind, he is simply to do stupid to be scared. He picks with everyone and anyone even though he might lose just to prove himself.
LEVITIKUZ
LEVITIKUZ - 5/8/2018, 7:52 AM
@MrBillCipher - I need to rewatch IW but I heard cracks during the Hulk vs Thanos fight like Thanos was breaking bones on the Hulk. I ain’t ever seen Hulk not just get beat but hearing bones break. That’s what scared him
LEVITIKUZ
LEVITIKUZ - 5/8/2018, 7:53 AM
It’s like Hulk enjoys fighting but Hulk fighting Thanos made Hulk realize, “damn this mutha[frick]er can hold his own & kill me. He breaking bones, he got the combo”

Hulk never had to fear the possibility of someone ending his life until Thanos
regularmovieguy

Don’t think he broke any bones. Banner seemed to be in pretty good shape after crash landing in New York.
THATNICEGUY

@LEVITIKUZ - I think a lot of people are not putting into consideration that Thanos had the power Stone and hulk held his own for the first few seconds of the fight and once Thanos is able to close his fist is when Thanos puts a beating on hulk...yes Thanos is strong enough to pull hulk off him at first but it all comes down to the power stone being in the gauntlet in my opinion

DoubleD - 5/8/2018, 9:08 AM
@LEVITIKUZ - Thanos can't kill the Hulk. Hulk is a true Immortal.

Hulk can't die no matter what Thano's does to him. Hulk's been blown into ashes and came back.

If they had shown something like that then I can believe it but all signs point to him being humilliated and with a broken spirit and pride. Didn’t even want to fight Obsidian Cull or the fodder Outriders.
BloodyBed
BloodyBed - 5/8/2018, 7:39 AM
wtf you didn't hint at that even a little bit, why wouldn't people assume he was scared?
