AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Directors Address [SPOILER]'s Surprising Absence And Doctor Strange's Role

Avengers: Infinity War boasts a massive cast but there were some notable omissions and now the Russo Brothers have addressed both that and some of the developments with Doctor Strange in the epic movie.

The Russo Brothers managed to cram a lot of characters into Avengers: Infinity War but there were some heroes who, for some reason, failed to make the cut. Perhaps the biggest omission was Valkyrie, a breakout character from Thor: Ragnarok who could have easily joined the God of Thunder on his mission to find the Stormbreaker hammer. So, why was she absent from this epic adventure?

Well, the filmmakers reportedly took place in a Q&A at an Iowa high school this week which saw Joe shed some light on the decisions which were made, including why there was no sign of Valkyrie.

Apparently, at least two other passengers managed to survive Thanos' attack on Thor's ship and one of them was Valkyrie. She escaped - presumably with some of the surviving Asgardians - in an escape pod but was Korg with her? Russo refused to reveal his fate one way or another but it would be a huge blunder on Marvel's part to now get rid of the character voiced by Ragnarok director Taika Waititi.

Russo was also asked about Doctor Strange's decision to willingly give Thanos the Time Stone and while he wouldn't go into detail, he did apparently emphasise the Sorcerer Supreme's final words: "This is the only way." That cryptic message will no doubt be further addressed when Avengers 4 rolls around because he may have known something we don't after visiting all those alternate timelines.

Strange's motives were fairly obvious especially after him saying he wouldn't trade their lives for the stone

@MyCoolYoung - he was right though. I wouldn't have either

@RocknRolla - I just mean once he saw the one time they won he obviously changed his thought process.

@MyCoolYoung - OR, the one time they won, Tony Stark was alive...

He obviously knew, and I believe Tony knows as well.

@BassMan - in the moment I don't think Tony knew but I'm sure he'd figure it out

@MyCoolYoung - Maybe, I can't imagine Strange not explaining how the one in 14 mill plays out to Tony. Especially after the "Endgame" comment. The others no, but Tony would want an explanation. And Strange would have to tell him what the action is that turns the tide, since Strange would know that he wouldn't be around to tell him later

@BassMan - Wong explained to strange that messing with time causes ripples in time, if he tells him anything it changes everything.

had Tony known I don't think he fights with everything he has. he also asked strange why'd he do that and I don't believe he'd ask if he knew. strange told him it was the end game to let him know his motives, nothing more.

@MyCoolYoung - Unless that future has him explaining it to Tony, but you do have a good point about Tony asking "Why'd you do that?" Suppose we'll have to wait and see

Doctor Strange essentially has an aspect of Warlock's role here. He's playing the long game.

Adam Warlock was the character who had the knowledge of how all of Thanos' attack would play out. He knew that there was one chance to defeat Thanos, and he made everyone sit back and wait for the right moment, even as the Mad Titan wiped out half the universe.

@BlackBeltJones - You're absolutely right. There is no wondering anything about what Stephen did. He went to the future, tried countless scenarii, and only in one did the Avengers end-up winning. So he's just doing what was done in said future. Thanos had to have all the stones, Tony had to survive, people had to be erased, Captain Marvel had to be called (which would not have happened if people hadn't been erased), and so on. It's not The Usual Suspects. Stephen saw what needed to be done, and he did it.

@Asturgis - A good twist that would even the odds for the next movie is that Thanos can find the way to use the Time Stone without the gauntlet and just like Doctor Strange did view all the possible outcomes of the Avengers' counterstrike. It'd be interesting if he also gets one result where he wins.
Asturgis

@NinnesMBC - I would love that. There have been a few comic characters that could run countless scenarii in their head before the fight began, to determine the best way to win. Midnighter I think, Finesse (Taskmaster's daughter), and I know I'm missing a few. It would be great if Stephen had found their only way to win, Thanos realizes it, watches the future himself, and shuts down the only hope the Avengers have. Hard. Then all seems lost, and something, or someone, the future and probabilities can't take into account, arrives and pulls a Hail Mary.

The Russos made Doctor Strange a stronger contender in Infinity War than he was in his own film. How the [frick] is Derrickson going to top when Doctor Strange goes all Shiva?

He has to step it up for Doctor Strange 2.
