AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Directors Considered Including Marvel TV Characters In The Film

The Russo brothers juggled an incredible array of film characters in Avengers: Infinity War. However, at one point, the directors considered integrating Marvel TV characters into the film...

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is enormous in size and scope, so far sprawled out across 19 films and a handful of television and Netflix shows. Series such as Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Marvel Netflix have clearly referenced and/or explained events that happened in the films. For example,  S.H.I.E.L.D. last night tied into Avengers: Infinity War by directly referencing Thanos, his reputation in the galaxy and his assault on Earth.

However, while many people have been clamoring for the films to directly acknowledge events or characters that occur in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. or The Defenders series, the movies have yet to explicitly do this. Kevin Feige has largely attested this lack of crossover to extreme challenges in logistically and narratively having the shows and films on the same page.

These challenges though did not stop the Russos and their all-star writers Markus and McFeely from considering including the TV characters in Avengers: Infinity War. Anthony Russo had the following to say on the subject:

We made the briefest consideration of [including TV characters in ‘Infinity War’]. When we’re alone in a room with [screenwriters Christopher] Markus and [Stephen] McFeely, we consider every idea. We like thinking of everything. But it seemed like the story that had been told within the movies was so specific and elaborate already that once we started working through the story, we knew we had our hands full just with this set of characters and narratives.

Russo does make a great point. Logistics aside, it would have been very difficult to successfully integrate the TV characters into the film and do them justice without detracting from the story. The Russos already had an extremely daunting task of tying together characters from 18 films, adding characters from the TV corners of the MCU would have not only confused members of the audiencce that do not watch the shows but also overly complicate the film. Plus, as Anthony states, the narrative of Thanos was more specific to the characters from the movies than those from the TV shows.

Do you think the Russos should have included characters from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and/or The Defenders in Avengers: Infinity War? Or do you believe that they already had their hands full with the vast array of characters from the various MCU films? Be sure to share your thoughts in the usual spot below!

It would have been fun but I understand the difficulties.

I'm impressed that the people who said they were going to be disappointed if the Defenders didn't pop up in Infinity War never mentioned it. The movie, even the NYC crossover bit, didn't suffer because of it.

@TheUnworthyThor - They can still appear in A4 which is rumored to be Secret Invasion.

Where we get a 10 year time jump where the Skrulls invaded various planets thanks to Thanos' wiping of 50%. So the Skrulls multiplied like Rabbits and took over every planet they could creating an intricate system of control.

The survivors take refuge in Wakanda which the Skrulls allowed for the humans to live and go extinct with no resources from the outside. So Captain Marvel shows Thanos that his list for balance came at a cost and he gave the Skrulls the golden ticket to rule the universe.

So Thanos teams up with The Avengers and sends Stark back in time to reset and prepare The Avengers for his arrival. Super-Skrull knowing this decides to launch a final assault on Wakanda.

Meanwhile in NY Cap has a band of secret Avengers including The Defenders rescuing humans and transporting them to Wakanda.

@SonOfAGif - that's actually pretty awesome

@HeavyMetal4Life - This would be why Hawkeye changes into Ronan because the Skrull Hawkeye has infiltrated Wakanda to dismantle the defenses from the inside.

@SonOfAGif - They won't though, because the TV stuff is the MCUs secret shame lol. I think DD & the Punisher could work, too bad Feige doesn't.

@SonOfAGif - That would be a pretty big letdown for Part 2 and a big waste of a storyline that could be great down the line.

@nikgrid - They don't have to use the Defender concept though, or actually use a comic accurate lineup of Defenders...a team which included Dr. Strange and Hulk at one point.

@WeaponXCII - haha. In all seriousness, I'd love to see Kingpin in a Spidey film

@HeavyMetal4Life - Yeah, it’s a shame they won’t. In the very least, it’d be nice to see Spider-Man show up in the Netflix shows, especially Daredevil. In fact, if they ever did another Defenders season, it’d be great to have Spider-Man show up at least once to take on Kingpin.

@DerekLake - Give how awful the CGI is in the Netflix shows are it would be a mess to show an acrobatic Spiderman on the small screen. They should just do a movie.

@WeaponXCII - I honestly think a Daredevil/Spider-Man crossover where they take on the Kingpin will be the first Netflix/MCU crossover, just watch!
Luminus
Luminus - 5/6/2018, 2:09 AM
@WeaponXCII - Exactly. They could've just used one character. As I said before, just imagine if when Cull Obsidian and Ebony Maw showed up, outside the Sanctum Santorium, someone ran up and knocked down Obsidian. And when the camera panned over to the reveal, it's Luke Cage. He should say something like, "Sweet Christmas, you're ugly." There would've been a MASSIVE pop for that. Such a missed opportunity to an already phenomenal film.
SonOfAGif
SonOfAGif - 5/6/2018, 1:54 PM
@Luminus - Well for one thing, Luke patrols Harlem. The Sanctum is in Greenwich Village. That's 35 min by car. Luke wouldn't be around the village.

The SHIELD team would have been ineffective anyway. As I see it, the only thing the movies need to do (and this is really what Civil War should have done) is to acknowledge that there are a lot more people with powers that exist beyond the ones we have seen. Inhumans have been the defining feature of the show from the start, and it’d be great if the films acknowledge this even in passing.
StormXmen123
StormXmen123 - 5/5/2018, 6:04 PM
@DerekLake - I compeletely understand that the Movies are first and then the Shows. And that the shows won't ah e an impact on the films.

That being said. I think the NuHuman explosion on earth should have been mentioned in the Accords scene of Civil War.
Just one line.

@StormXmen123 - That's what I'm saying. Just one line. Geesh. Throw a fan a bone, for crying out loud. I blame Bob Iger. No one likes him, and thus don't want to work with him.

I could see the TV characters making a cameo in Avengers 4. Not much more than that though. How much help is Daredevil gonna be when you've got a Hulk.
HeavyMetal4Life
HeavyMetal4Life - 5/5/2018, 2:11 PM
@Nightwing1015 - exactly. The Defenders have no role in a movie like this. SHIELD, well you have Daisy. But a cameo, interesting you mention that. Based on what some people have hinted at, we might be getting one...

How are the shows gonna deal with this? It's too big of an event to act like it's not there.

If they don't address this they might as well say the movies and shows aren't connected at all.

It's too big to brush off
HeavyMetal4Life
HeavyMetal4Life - 5/5/2018, 2:13 PM
@Ineedrevelation - at the very least, SHIELD will address it. So far, they have. Last night's episode occurred right as Thanos' forces were beginning their assault on Wakanda

@Ineedrevelation - Agents will deal with it but idk about the Netflix ones. I'm really thinking they'll ignore it.
