AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Directors Discuss The High Stakes At The End Of AVENGERS 4

Avengers: Infinity War left the audience on a mighty somber note after Thanos successfully obtained all of the infinity stones and snapped his fingers. Fans have been wondering how Avengers 4 will address the fate of some of the characters or undo the events at the end of Infinity War. The Russos and their writers Markus and McFeely though have made it clear that the sequel will have as much of an impact, if not more and have noted that the fourth film may not do exactly what the audience expects it to do.

When asked on the radio about whether Avengers 4 would undo the events from the end of Avengers: Infinity War, the Russo brothers played coy. However, Joe did have the following to say about the stakes in the MCU, noting that there will be a very high cost to defeating Thanos:

Obviously Thanos is a very formidable villain and to beat Thanos will come at a very high cost. We're committed to stakes, we believe in stakes, and we like to shake up the Marvel Universe. We had a big game-changer at the end of Winter Soldier, had a big game-changer at the end of Civil War, a big game-changer at the end of Infinity War. Obviously, there will be a big game changer at the end of Avengers 4.

The Russos clearly value the importance of stakes and, if their previous films are any indication, we can expect some major changes to occur by the conclusion of Avengers 4, perhaps even rivaling the end of Avengers: Infinity War. This is especially true since Avengers 4 will serve as the final chapter of the current MCU book, ending one era and ushering in a new one. We now have less than a year before we find out for ourself what the game-changer will be that closes out the first three phases of the MCU.

What do you think about what Joe Russo had to say about Avengers 4? Any suspicions of what may be the high cost in the sequel? Be sure to share your thoughts in the usual spot below!

I really hope this picks up a few years after IW. I think it’s be amazing to see the new world after the loss that we saw.

Older Cassie Lang is a big clue to this

@AFriendFromWork - How? It's confirmed that Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel is set minutes after Avengers 4. It's also been stated that they want to keep Peter in High School, so unless everything is undone and people's memories get erased (bad move), that's not going to work.

@Luminus - In my opinion, and that’s all this is and could be way off, but I think and hope it happens.

The casting call for an older Cassie Lang has really got my imagination running. I know when the next Spider-Man is set, but I think there may be some sort of retcon or they go back in time to fix it.

But hey, I’m a guy half way round the world with no idea what the Russo’s are doing

@AFriendFromWork - It seems like there's going to be time travel involved. If that's the case, then the older Cassie could be explained that way instead of the whole thing taking place years after.

@Luminus - MCU is in real time, so if they stick with this logic 1 year would have passed since the ending of Avengers 3. Then homecoming 2 picks up after Avengers 4 where spiderman has been absent for 1 year and this is "apparently" how the Sinister 6 and Oscorp rose to power in in the criminal empire. And this is where the Sony Verse picks up as Homecoming 2 would be Marvel's last use of Spider-man.

@mastakilla39 - MCU is not in real time.

Black Panther takes place immediately AFTER Civil War, despite coming out two years later.

Captain Marvel takes place in the 90s.

Ant-Man and the Wasp takes place BEFORE Infinity War.

Etc. Etc.

@PsychoticSpaceRaccoon - Who’s going to believe someone psychotic from space who happens to be a raccoon. At least Rocket is only obnoxious and a thief.

All the Cap movies had an effect on Marvel
1 not so much but helped with pre-SHIELD
2 Hydra infestation
3 Breaking up the band

@Kevwebsz - Don't undersell First Avenger. It introduced the space stone.

So they're goona rip my heart open again?....Cool, i'm a sucker for pain anyway.

What i'd really love is to have Cap talk with Rocket, Rocket's gonna lose it when he realizes that the rest of the Guardians are gone and Cap's really good with talks, even if he himself losing his shit as well, Cap can really calm him and get him through his senses. Just have them talk with Thor right beside them, as well as Cap and Thor could really teach him a thing or two and how to grieve with loss, both of them have lost a f**kn lot and still manage a way to keep going which i love since it makes them a lot more relatable, i love their characters development ( the 3 of them) and it'd be great just to have Cap talk with Rocket, it'd be a nice touch imo.

My brother has the theory that the people who didn't disappear from the snap are actually the ones who are dead and or trapped.in the soul stone. I told him nice twist Shamalan lol!!!

@MrCamw1 - a nice theory and if the leaked image of doctor strange telling spider-man to protect them they are not dead is actually in avengers 4, the theory might be right

@jrp6048 - That dialogue refers to the Guardians who get knocked out by the power stone and then flung into the air after the moon rocks get slammed into Titan. People will twist anything to prove their points.

One thing they need to do is take a page out of James Gunn's GOTG vol. 2 and focus more on the emotions.

The entire third act of Vol 2 was one big tear-jerking firefight.

The music, dialogue and vfx were executed to perfection.

Infinity War focused mainly on the fights and the philosophy of Thanos, which was great.

I think the only way to improve on it is to crank up the feelings and the epic soundtrack.

Why no time loop from Doctor Strange for their battle with Thanos?

Every time Thanos kills Tony Stark we go back to when Thanso arrives on Titan?
RedHood92
RedHood92 - 5/6/2018, 4:50 AM
@IronGenesis - I was curios why he didn't do that like he did with Dormammu. Maybe Strange already seen all the possibilities and one of them was him using the time stone and it didn't work on Thanos because of the infinity stones he possesses . or maybe Dr. Strange did not want to risk the time stone battling with thanos.
IronGenesis
IronGenesis - 5/6/2018, 5:07 AM
@Redhood92 - that was one of the problems I had with Doctor Strange. The introduction of that ability.

Don’t get me wrong it provided a amazingly funny and cool moment.

But once they introduced his ability to monkey with time like that, you just knew it wasn’t going to be consistently honored in future films.

Because to honor it, basically removes all consequences and stakes.

Literally Strange could cast a time loop that any time he died or something happened, the world would go back in time.

@IronGenesis - I would have enjoyed a scene involving Dr. Strange trying to manipulate time and Thanos canceling it out through the use of the reality stone.
Jaspion
Jaspion - 5/6/2018, 5:45 AM
@IronGenesis - you guys forget that Strange used the time loop in a dimension where time doesn't exist. He probably can't do the same here without some consequence.
RedHood92
RedHood92 - 5/6/2018, 5:45 AM
@IronGenesis - yeah i agree that's the problem with shared universe. Different directors will change the characters abilities and power levels to suit the story. but still Dr. Strange did held his own on battling with Thanos than one on one even without the time stone. He did almost used it on Maw but was stopped.
IronGenesis
IronGenesis - 5/6/2018, 5:58 AM
@Jaspion - maybe. But then Thanos did reverse time to bring Vision back together.

These aren’t deal breakers. I loved IW, but just little things to ponder now that the hype and effect of the film has worn off.
OmegaDaGrodd
OmegaDaGrodd - 5/6/2018, 6:59 AM
@Jaspion - Good point, also that as we saw with the time Strange tried to trap Thanos in the mirror dimension, the gauntlet can actually break the effects of magic, especially since he also has the reality stone.

Wait, what was the big game changer at then end of Civil War? Tony and Steve not talking to eachother?
iDrumZ
iDrumZ - 5/6/2018, 9:12 PM
Honestly I don’t think the stakes from Winter Soldier and Civil War were high. There was no game changer really. Or at least nothing that you didn’t know was only temporary.

I think the whole Ultimate Nullifier story would be good. However I do think Cap and Iron Man should bite the dust. It’s just hard to imagine moments of glory better than what we just saw. That fight between Thanos and Iron Man was set up perfectly for him to die. He’d gone all out and pulled a bunch of tricks. Hard to top that scene.
