AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Directors On The Black Order And Their Role Compared To Thanos

The Russo brothers discuss the role the Black Order played in Avengers: Infinity War, comparing their purpose to that of their father and the film's main villain, Thanos. Caution - SPOILERS ahead...

The Black Order made their villainous debut in Avengers: Infinity War. As the children of Thanos, they were sent to retrieve the two infinity stones on Earth. And while the Black Order served as worthy foes for Earth's mightiest heroes to fight, certain characters made more of an impression than others (Ebony Maw and Proxima Midnight).

In a recent Q&A discussion with students at Iowa City High School, the brothers were asked about the lack of backstory to the Black Order. As the Russos indicated, this was intentional:

I think people have been waiting 10 years to have the Marvel heroes together in a 2 and half hour film. So If I started to go into the history of them- that’s a whole another movie all together. I felt like they did their jobs in the film. And the audience got enough of them in the film- as much as they needed them in the film. As much as I like those characters- and as much as I like comic books I feel that if I started delving into their backstory it would become unwatchable- only so many characters you can keep in your head.

There are certainly only so many characters that can be properly balanced in a film this massive and epic in scope. Devoting more of the film to the Black Order would have taken away from the rest of the story and the focus on Thanos, and the last thing the Russos wanted to do was fail to deliver on the spectacle that fans had been waiting for over the past decade.

When further pressed about how the Black Order were killed off, the brothers added the following:

Well Thanos is the true bad guy of the movie you don’t want the sub villains overshadowing the super villain... And we [wanted] to save him for the final showdown between him and the heroes. They weren’t easy to dispatch all of them- it certainly took a few nasty fights.

Do you agree with the approach the Russos took with balancing the Black Order and Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War? Are you pleased with how Thanos' children were depicted in the film? Be sure to leave your thoughts in the usual spot below!

@Vigor

Ebony Maw was really well done. I expected more from Proxima Midnight after Carrie Coon was cast. I didn’t the CGI on any of them was all that impressive either.

:/

But Ebony Maw was really fun to watch.

It is a bit weird that Captain America, Black Widow, Bruce Banner and Iron Man (all human) were able to defeat the Black Order whereas Hulk, Korg, Valkyrie, Loki, Thor and Heimdall (mostly Gods and the strongest human) were beaten easily.

Only one that really stood out was Ebony Maw. Wish he made it in the end.

@RocknRolla - I think that too...we just saw him floating in space, for all we know he could survive that, similar to Thor.

I kinda missed Supergiant. But I understand why they didn't use her, it just wouldn't fit in anywhere. Ebony Maw in the contrary, he was really neat. Even better than some past MCU main villains

I don't know why Maw died first he was the best one. The rest were really cool looking cannon-fodder.

@MarvelDCAllDay - Maw should have been around longer but I do think that Cull Obsidian had some pretty sweet action moments as well

I didn’t know of them or there backstory until this movie so I’m happy with the mystery that surrounds them. From my own perspective anyway.

Maw and Midnight were definitely the stand-outs. But the real power...!!

My friend next to me in the theater cheered every time one of the Black Order died. Not because he hated them but because they were such a threat to the Avengers

I also think they did their job but hopefully, at least Maw and Glaive come back in A4. From the comics, they are the more fleshed out characters.
