One of the most shocking moments in Avengers: Infinity War came when Thanos and Gamora met the Red Skull on Vormir and it was revealed that the Tesseract ended up sending him to the planet where he was forced to become the guardian of the Soul Stone. We've since learned that it was The Walking Dead's Ross Marquand who played the villain but what led to the character's surprise return here?

"Somebody had to be the gatekeeper to the Soul Stone and somebody had to distribute the rules to Thanos and Gamora," Joe explained before Anthony interrupted by adding "In a way that was credible and believable." Joe then went on to explain that the Red Skull was someone who felt "credible to the audience" as opposed to someone moviegoers may not have been familiar with from the comics.

"A character who has been trapped – the Red Skull has been turned into this wraith who now guards the Soul Stone and distributes the rules to whoever shows up their trying to obtain it. It felt like there was more credibility than just a random character." Anthony adds: "Somebody who has a history with the stones may seem like they have a little more authority in terms of their experience – especially a tragic experience." Well, that explanation definitely makes sense when you think about it!

As for why Hugo Weaving wasn't brought back to play the Red Skull, Joe said: "You know, he made a statement a couple of years back that he was done with Marvel. Ross Marquand did an incredible job of capturing not only the essence of his voice, but the essence of the performance – a haunted figure who is now this imprisoned spirit." What did you think of the Red Skull's return in Infinity War?

@Supercat6376 - I honestly had no idea it wasn’t him until it was reported it was this guy. I even realized it was Red Skull before they showed his face

@Ha1frican - the first few words I thought it was him but after that I felt something was a little off. I didn’t care though. I was shocked.

Red Skull probably longs for death now. Being immortal is no fun when you're stick on some rock for all eternity.

as a villain... but nope. Let's make cap's greatest nemesis a [frick]in wraith. I know everyone loves the russo's for winter soldier but man, after Civil War and this nonsense they really don't get cap. They really only understand Iron Man. Even Thor after they finally made him powerful without the need of a hammer...Oh I must go find a more powerful hammer. Wtf.

@kakinurmawth - it’s like they did get Cap until they didn’t...

@kakinurmawth - They don’t get Cap!? They did a direct and genuine take on Ed Brubaker’s handling of the character. I get opinions and subjectivity but that’s just flat out wrong.

@DTor91 - All the Russo's have ever done with Cap is make him question his beliefs and what he stands for. Which isn't Cap. Cap doesn't second guess himself and always stands up for his beliefs. That is what makes Cap such a potent character.

Russo's need conflict and what makes them such great directors. They gravitate towards Iron Man because he literally wears his insecurities. From the outside what is Cap's insecurities? He appears to have non. They suffer from the "how do we make a good upstanding character relatable". Instead of tapping into that never give up, never surrender self sacrificing identity he tirelessly fights with and for, he's reduced to a naive soldier that is betrayed by his government which makes him question his beliefs. He never believed in the government, he believes in ideals.

Cap quietly suffers for others' benefit.

THIS is Cap:

I don't feel the russos really captured this. Whedon was the only one to really get Cap. Avengers and Ultron was Cap.

@kakinurmawth - Well for me Cap in Cap 1 and Avengers was boring and cheesy, its Winter Soldier that turned me into Cap fan.Way more interesting as the character.

Ok so like now what?

Where’s the Red Skull now that the Soul Stone is Taken?

@LEVITIKUZ - Still there. Cap might have a conversation with since the people are trapped within the soul stone.

I hope they do something more with him now. He should be freed and some sort of omnipotent spirit. Put him back on Earth with some higher purpose so he can cross paths with Cap for some reason in Avengers 4.

@SpideyPuffsMJ - Even though I'd like him to come back in a bigger role, it seems like his character's story arc is pretty much over. He doesnt seem like he has any motivation for revenge or whatever plot to bring him back and be an adversary to Cap or the Avengers.

@SpideyPuffsMJ - In the comic, souls that escape Soulworld can take possession of the recently deceased. So Skull could be reincarnated later in a new human body.
