BOX OFFICE: AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Had An Even Bigger Weekend Globally Than Initially Expected

As we heard yesterday, Avengers: Infinity War is the new king of the box office as the final numbers are in and the Marvel Studios movie actually exceeded expectations with a record-breaking $258.2 million in North America and $382.7 million overseas for a combined total of $640.9 million. Amazingly, the epic ensemble managed to do that without opening in China where it will debut on May 11th.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens was the previous record holder with $248 million domestically and The Fate of the Furious held the global record with a whopping $541.9 million (which obviously pales in comparison to the total made by Avengers: Infinity War). The Russo Brothers helmed release also had the biggest Saturday ever with $83 million and the biggest Sunday with an impressive $69 million.

"Marvel spent 10 years methodically and carefully creating a universe of characters, worlds and stories that all led to this and, in doing so, created an event unlike anything the business has ever seen," Disney distribution chief Dave Hollis. Studio veteran Cathleen Taff adds: "We have been sitting here all weekend in astonishment." Given these massive numbers, it's pretty easy to see why!

In a surprise twist, Black Pather - now in its 11th weekend - managed to exceed expectations this weekend too when it moved up the chart from #8 to #5 with a great haul of $4.4 million. Not bad, eh?

@Ryguy88 - Incorrect, you only have to wait until July 6, 2018 for Ant-Man and the Wasp.

@Ryguy88 - after deadpool, we are entering a period of weak comic movies.

the past few months, November thru may, have been a ride.

@Ryguy88 - you have no idea how much it DOES count.

Ant-Man was seen as the female friendly comic film when it came out, Dr. Strange helped that, and building that audience is where the future of these films is.

There is a reason Black Panther did as well as it did. It captured audiences that weren't given the spotlight before and made them a force to be reckoned with.

Ant-Man began that.

@fadersdream - I dont see the similarities betweem Antman and Black Panther outside of the obvious. Besides, Antman looks like it might be funny, but so does the next Will Farrell movie, doesnt mean I really care about it.

@Ryguy88 - The audience has to expand.

Ant-Man and Black Panther did that.
Ant-Man brought in moms and girlfriends, and Black Panther embraced diversity. Wonder Woman also made huge strides.

For Comic movies to truly expand the audience has to change, even if that means movies that don't appeal directly to me, if it builds a more diverse audience it allows new ideas to prosper and grow.

@Ryguy88 - LOL...jajaja a lot of people feel that way but... it's still part of the MCU and will still tie in some way, and some how it will matter.

I guess it's pretty safe to believe Disney is quite happy to have bought Marvel then?

@Poochie - I seriously never thought I would ever see anything like this in a comic book film any time soon. I am still shocked. The Russos are on another level of comic book movie.
