Could Marvel Studios Put Out More Than 3 Films A Year?

Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige discusses the company's move to three films a year and whether they could ever surpass that output. Plus, an update on when Marvel will confirm Doctor Strange and Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 casting.

In looking at the future of comic book movies, what will the landscape look like in 10 years? The DCEU is just getting off the ground with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. A slew of films are planned to follow but if Dawn of Justice disappoints, WB may elect to scale back its aggressive slate. 20th Century Fox is steady with its X-Men franchise but Hugh Jackman is preparing to hang up the claws and Gambit looks to have about a 50/50 chance of getting off the ground. Lets not even discuss Fantastic Four. We could easily have a future where WB and Fox fail to rise up and challenge Marvel for box office supremacy. Would that cause Kevin Feige and company to feel "bullish" and increase their output of MCU films past three-a-year? Perhaps say, one per quarter?

Speaking to /Film, Feige stated that he's not sure that they'll ever go past three films a year and that discussions are currently happening to revive the Marvel One-Shots.  "We talk about [One-Shots] a lot actually, because when you have tables like that (lots of potential storylines, most unexplored in the finished film), and we go, What are we going to do with Howard (the Duck)? What are we going to do with Cosmo? We should do a one shot with Michael Pena. I mean, the universe is big. We’re moving up to three movies a year and I’m not sure how much beyond that we can go so the one shots are great for: oh we have this great idea, wouldn’t it be fun to see… We talk about it a lot. We’re a relatively small team. We’re comfortable doing three movies a year so its just about finding the time and the place. But we have a backlog of ideas."

Feige also commented on when fans can expect casting for Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 and Doctor Strange to be officially announced by Marvel.  "I think it will be pretty quickly. There will be a slew of casting announcements over the next few months. Before the end of the year on those two films and some other films."

More then 3 films a year will be spreading the team thin. I'm good with just 3. But, it they did it successfully, more is always better.

Said the same thing about the Thor 3 and Black Panther directors. By the End of the Summer my ass.

Dawn of Justice is not going to fail lol...
And I would rather they do two releases personally; especially considering Netflix is now a factor in MCU

More than 3 Marvel films a year and nearly all of them mediocre.

The Spielbergian prophecy is coming to pass!

Phase 2 was essentially a set up for phase 3, so the mediocrity of phase 2 better be worth it

@ WakandasSoul

O.o what!? Phase 2 gave us CA: The Winter Solider and Guardians of the Galaxy. Those are the best MCU movies to date.

Yeah, Phase 2 has been stellar.

Iron Man 3, Winter Soldier and GotG were fantastic.

Age of Ultron was great.

Ant-Man was surpringly good.

Can't wait for Phase 3 to kick off.

I would actually recommend going back to 2 a year. 3 a year is fine I guess but 4 is definitely pushing it. Less is more.

Three would be to many, same for FOX, same for DC!!!!!!!

Imagine getting 8 to 9 cbms a year? Yeah that would doe the genre in!!!!!!

Wow if Marvel puts out 3 movies per year then Fox and DC will obviously follow.
That's 9 CBM's per YEAR...jesus

These movies are going to bump with eachover (and other blockbusters) that they will loose a lot of money.

every single phase 2 movie was either a very good intro movie (ie Ant Man, GOTG) or a step up from their phase 1 predecessor.

Iron Man 3 is way up from Iron Man 2, and 1

Cap 2 is better than Cap 1

Thor 2 is better than Thor 1

and while many disagree, IMO Avengers 2 is even better than Avengers 1.

One Shots are in the mix again?! Sounds great. The schizophrenic nature of Age of Ultron can be partially blamed on all of the franchise heavy-lifting it had to do. If One Shots can take the weight off, then all the better.

I was watching some old Batman and Robin serials the other day, and it reminded me of the One Shots, and how they could potentially tell larger stories when done in sequence. A 16 minute story is really all you'd need to give a character like Falcon or War Machine or Scarlet Witch or Sharon Carter or Hawkeye or Black Widow or whoever some really well-deserved characterization. "Do more with less screentime" works occasionally, like the party scene in Ultron, but sometimes we need a good five or ten minutes with a character to really get to know them.

No one is mentioning the fact that Spider-Man being at Marvel puts more on their plate while all but removing one of their rivals for CBM box office money. I remember interviews of Feige saying "we can't really do more than 2 movies a year..."

It's good that they aren't rushing too much, but they are pretty steadily increasing their output.
