Elizabeth Olsen Weighs In On Scarlet Witch's Mutant Heritage Being Explored When The X-MEN Arrive In The MCU

In the comics, Wanda Maximoff has typically been portrayed as Magneto's daughter. Now, with the X-Men set to arrive in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the near future, what's next for the Scarlet Witch?

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Scarlet Witch gained her powers after being experimented on by Baron Von Strucker. As you'll no doubt recall, he used the Infinity Stone which now resides on the forehead of The Vision to make her and Quicksilver powerful enough to take on Earth's Mightiest Heroes and that was a major departure from the comics where the twins are the children of Magneto.

Now, with the X-Men set to arrive in the Marvel Cinematic Universe thanks to the deal between Disney and Fox, what are the chances Wanda's origin story could be retconned to make her a mutant?

According to Avengers: Infinity War star Elizabeth Olsen, it's not something she sees as being on the table for her character down the line. "I don't think so because we've gone so far to create a non X-Men universe backstory for my character. And now it's the reason I'm connected to
Vision, because the stone in his head is the stone that gave me my powers. So we really leap into the stones."

Marvel could, of course, find another way to delve into the relationship between Magneto and his children but it wouldn't be too surprising if Kevin Feige shelves the villain for a while given how much screentime he's received over the years. That's something Olsen remains open to! "So I don't think so, however, if there were a Michael Fassbender being my daddy crossover I would say, 'Yes please,'" Olsen jokingly added. "I would love to work with Fassbender." What do you guys think?

They could say the reason why the twins survived the hidra experiment is because they have mutant genes.

"Had", in Pietro's case.

@Jaspion - Back before the Inhumans were butchered for tv I thought they could have somehow brought Quicksilver back using the Terrigen Mists.

Easy to do, they would just say the gem ‘unlocked’ there mutant potential, not create it. To explain no Magnet mention, just say they didn’t know their father and they were orphans.

@DarthLaney - But their parents died in the MCU. That's the whole reason for them going after the Avengers.

@Origame - A retcon could make them adoptive parents. Or foster parents.

@deepee3 - Aren't they living in a poor country? I'm pretty sure if they were genuinely orphans, they'd be living on the streets and have no foster or adoptive parents.

@DarthLaney - while stress stress can unlock potential of the X-gene, I still don't feel they can retcon her powers in the MCU.

She was part of a Hydra experiment, I'm sure the hydra scientist would want to figure out why the twins survived and the other didn't. They would have compared their genomes and discovered the twins had the X-gene.

And to be fair they really have connected her powers directly to he power the Infinty stone (connection with vision + manipulation of it). It would feel like out of the blue to say "oh she is a mutant now and it just a considered her mutants powers can affect the stone".

@Origame - They don't have to be legally adopted to have adoptive parents. It's a war-torn country, I imagine it's pretty common for people to take in orphans off the street. It happens everyday in the real world, why can't it happen in the MCU?

Real simple. Hydra experiments only shortened the time it took for their powers to emerge.

@Kevwebsz -
If you're a mutant, your powers manifest in your teenage years. Wanda and Pietro were in their 20's when they got powers through experimentation. They're not mutants, but mutates.

No I prefer Scarlet Witch not being a mutant. And for the character’s first twenty years of existence she was not Magneto’s daughter and for that several she hasn’t been and it’s been just great.
