Joe Russo Clarifies Which Version Of SECRET WARS He Wants To See Brought To The Big Screen

Avengers: Infinity War brings together Earth's Mightiest Heroes and the Guardians of the Galaxy but the Marvel Cinematic Universe is about to get even more epic with the addition of the X-Men and Fantastic Four. That's a long way off as of right now, however, and the way these characters will be brought into this world remains a hot topic of debate. The Russos are a big fan of using Secret Wars.

As you may recall, they recently noted their interest in that storyline and the ways it could be used to add the X-Men and Fantastic Four to the MCU. However, while many fans assumed they were referring to the recent Jonathan Hickman penned version of Secret Wars which mashed together a bunch of alternate realities, it turns out that Joe Russo was talking about the original, classic comic book.

"Hopefully they’re about to get their hands on a few of them. Listen, my second favorite character growing up, and one of my prized possessions in my comic book collection is Incredible Hulk #181, which of course is the first appearance of Wolverine. I feel like the mission of the Marvel Universe is to keep expanding and surprising people. Surprise them with casting choices, surprise them with story choices. If we’re moving into this world of crossover events, certainly that affords opportunity for other large-scale stories from the books like Secret Wars — which was another favorite comic of mine as a kid."

The Russos are clearly excited about the prospect of seeing the Fantastic Four and X-Men in the MCU then and it's hard to think of anyone better than them to handle the introduction of characters like Wolverine and they'd no doubt adapt a storyline like Secret Wars perfectly. What do you guys think? Would you like to see that brought to the big screen? Share your thoughts in the comments section.

I would be very happy with either version, but if they get Dr Doom back, 2015 is the best choice

Not gonna lie, none too bothered about the FF and X-Men, I'm just waiting on Doom, Galactus, even the Impossible Man <3

As far as I'm concerned, they stopped publishing comics in 2010, so... yeah, obviously he was talking about Secret Wars from 1984.

I guess no one told him that the war was supposed to be a secret. Now everyone is gonna know about it.

I wonder what the extent of his collection is?! Plethora is a word that comes to mind.

And I can’t express the heights to which Infinity War left me. The shear scope of all involved is an incredible exercise in current film making. I applaud the Russo’s and everyone at Marvel.

For those of you seeing it more than once you will not be disappointed every single time!

Excited for Avengers 3 but I really can't stop thinking about part 4. You gotta think maybe since some major contracts are ending that it could be even bigger than part 3.

Ok, bring on the Beyonder!! And don´t even try to replace him with Dr. Doom.
Dr. Doom is in, so is the Beyonder.

The original Secret Wars was terribly written and was done as an excuse to sell toys.

@RolandD - Agreed to a certain point. It haven't aged well (I still have the originals) but the assembly was epic.

Plus the overall story is good and shows a lot about the characters.

The best part IMO is how while everyone is wondering what the hell they're gonna do now, Dr. Doom, with his genious mind, is already finding a way to gather that immense power to himself.

That's the good part IMO, and if we see something like that in a big screen I'm gonna shit my pants.

Oh, and this scene was also really good:

I think the original Secret Wars would be a great adaptation to bring the characters from the other studios back together. I just wonder if the Beyonder will be dressed up in his 80's attire. lol

Trying to avoid Infinity War Spoilers. I have my 10:30pm Imax showing Thursday night. Looking forward to it!
