Kevin Feige Explains Why Hawkeye's Absence From AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR's Marketing Is A Good Thing

Hawkeye's absence from Avengers: Infinity War's marketing materials has got everyone talking and Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige has now explained why the lack of attention he's been shown is a good thing.

Who knew that Hawkeye was so popular? Before the lack of attention he's been receiving from Marvel Studios during Avengers: Infinity War's marketing campaign, the answer was probably no one!

The fact that no one knows where he is or what he'll be doing in the movie has increased interest in Clint Barton's future tenfold and the whole #WheresHawkeye hashtag has definitely generated even more interest in this highly anticipated superhero ensemble. Now, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has explained why he believes the mystery surrounding the character is ultimately for the best.

"I think it’s one of the best things that ever happened to Hawkeye. We [at Marvel] love Hawkeye. There are big, big story things coming up for Hawkeye and Jeremy Renner is as strong an actor as anyone in the MCU and awesome as this character. But ‘The guy with the bow and arrow jokes’, right? There are a lot of ‘Guy with bow and arrow jokes.’ He even makes ‘Guy with a bow and arrow’ jokes in some of the movies. So I love that people go from ‘Oh, Hawkeye is just lucky to be there’ to ‘Oh where is he? He’s not there? Whats going to happen? We need Hawkeye. We want more Hawkeye.’ I love it. It’s the best."

It definitely sounds like we should expect Hawkeye to get something good to do here then and the Russo Brothers went on to make it clear that they have a very specific reason for not including him.

"As we were working on both films, we were thinking about story real estate. We had the luxury of cracking both scripts at the same time and we wanted to give each character, especially the original Avengers, their moments. It led us to certain choices, especially considering the events of Civil War where [Hawkeye’s] included in this group of insurgents and has to deal with the ramifications of siding against the U.S. government. So that led us to a very specific story with him that, as I’ve said before is a long play, not a short play. Audiences just need to be patient."

What do you think the future holds in store for Clint Barton moving into Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4? Do you think the character will have a key role to play or be just another background player? We have only days to wait before finding out but be sure to stay tuned for additional details.

See, Balt? When Papa Kevin hits you, it's just so you appreciate it more when he doesn't hit you.

Off-topic, but I'm reading the original Eternals comics and they just name dropped "Lemuria", so I decided to look it up since it was only vaguely familiar sounding and I wanted to know specifically what Kirby was appropriating. Anyway, it's a proposed (and now-debunked) sunken continent to explain the distribution of modern primates around the Indian ocean. Hence: "Lemur"ia. It's literally named "The Place with the Lemurs".

And that sounded real dumb to me, until I realized that Antarctica literally means "The Place Opposite The Place with the Bears".

@Spock0Clock - Fun fact: the ship at the beginning of The Winter Soldier that Cap and Natasha infiltrate is called "The Lemurian Star".

Coincidence?

@L0RDbuckethead - And the Lemurian Star was a satellite launching ship.

It essentially launched human satellites...or "stars" built by "lemurs".

Don't think too many people are saying they want more Hawkeye. More speculation about what this might mean in terms of the movie, like him dying early or getting the Ronin costume.

I think its fair to say that Hawkeye ends in this or the conclusion film, there's been little hints like RDJ saying only Hawkeye can save the world, I'm sure some of its the old underpowered human joke but apart from the suit reveal that pretty much has been seen in BTS stuff there's no real meat in Hawkeye..He's had his little arc's here and there but the old family man comes back to be an Avenger again either means Thanos kills his family or they are playing the old "but he's such a good man, he didn't deserve to die" ideal..

No disrespect to JR but you aint got Scarlet J's looks and body so as the only other non powered up Avenger you seem good to take the fall...

@Mclane - you are aware falcon is nonpowered as well yes? Did you think before you posted? and the russos are better directors than "we kill characters based on their powerlevels". Whoever is good to take the fall is based on a story perspective. Not whether a character can shoot laser beams from their hands. Thank god they don't have the mindset of the average pleb

"story real estate"

What the bloody Hell is that? French guy here, I've never heard of this expression, and I'm not sure what it means. Story building? laying down the foundations of a story? Story potential? Story portfolio (like the entirety of their story sandbox)?

I think they shouldn't have tied Hawkeye to SHIELD from the get-go like the Ultimates and maybe even had him come out in an origin movie before The Avengers, if they wanted to avoid the "guy with a bow and arrow" jokes.

The problem with making Hawkeye "useful" as everyone wants him to be on-screen, like taking out a [frick]ing Kree ship-- or we'll say Chitauri Leviathan in terms of the MCU, is that people will whine about him being OP just like the same vicious cycle Black Widow's been in.

Reminds me of how Marvel Comics has been handling the Fantastic Four the past few years. Its like "You only miss it when it's gone"

Can't wait. Love The Hawk. Can't believe people have been so worried that he would be neglected.
