MoviePass Prohibits Repeat Viewings Just As AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Hits Theaters

MoviePass members hoping to catch multiple viewings of Avengers: Infinity War for the low monthly cost of just $9.95 are out of luck as the company revised its terms of service to prohibit repeat viewings.

MoviePass has made a series of sweeping changes to its service, drastically altering the value of the monthly subscription ticketing program. Just as the highly anticipated Marvel blockbuster Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters, MoviePass announced it would no longer offer the ability for subscribers to to see the same movie more than once.

In its updated Terms of Use, MoviePass states in all capitals: "THE SERVICE PROHIBITS REPEAT VIEWINGS OF THE SAME MOVIE."

It's a move that'll surely upset moviegoers hoping to catch repeat viewings of Avengers: Infinity War through the service, and comes at a time when the company just recently altered its plan.

In the FAQ section of the MoviePass website, the company attempts to put a positive spin on the unfavorable change. Asked why members can't see the same move more then once, MoviePass states: "We recently updated our Terms of Service to reflect that MoviePass subscribers are only permitted to see a select movie in theaters once with your MoviePass. We hope this will encourage you to see new movies and enjoy something different!"

This latest changes comes on the heels of MoviePass offering a special "promotion" that bundled iHeartRadio All Access with a stripped-down version of original MoviePass plan. The once too-good-to-be-true service that offered one movie ticket per day for just $9.95 a month, now only offers a plan that supplies subscribers with just four movie tickets per month. Still a decent value, all things considered, but nowhere nearly as attractive as before. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, CEO Mitch Lowe said he wasn't sure if the ticket-per-day offering would ever return.

These latest changes could have something to do with MoviePass parent company Helios recording a $150.8 million loss in 2017, largely from MoviePass. Anyone who purchased a year's subscription of MoviePass in advance is urged to call customer service should they have an issue with the new terms.

This is frustrating, but I understand the move from a business perspective. When I signed up I knew that it would become too good to be true eventually.

But what I want to know is this new 4-movie a month going to affect ALL subscribers or will those who signed up before the change be able to keep our movie a day plan?

Saw the movie on Thursday and my mind is stiIl blown. I won’t say anything because I’m not sure if this is supposed to be one of those spoiler threads, but I need at least 3 more viewings of Infinity War.

@DashParr - It's basically just when the title's got "spoiler" in red text. Then talk about whatever you want. 👍

@DashParr -
Twice at the moment, will probably be enough for now and then i'll just wait for the physical release for further repeat viewings.

Not entirely familiar with the spoiler policy either, dont think it was clarified further than 'wait till we start talking about spoilers'. I'm guessing if 'Spoilers' are in the title then it is acceptable to discuss spoilers relating to the topic or branching off the topic? May be best to get a staff member to clarify.

Caught Chappaquiddick last night with the gf. There was a bug and I had to pay the $10. Still a hell of a deal for $10 a month.

@GeneralZod1138

I mean - I see a lot of movies. Not many repeat viewings. So this is still a good deal for me.

@Ha1frican

I got the deal last August so mine is in place for at least a year.

4 movies for $10 a month is still a pretty good deal. Just not as good as the original.

@regularmovieguy - not really when you realize it’s no IMAX or RPX, no repeat viewings, and you can’t pre-buy tickets so if they are sold out you’re out of luck

@Ha1frican

I saw Infinity War in IMAX. Paid full price for it. But I see a lot of movies. Not every movie I see is going to need reserved seating or premium ticket.

It’s an awesome deal. If I see a movie a month it pays for itself.

NHBAHAHAHAHAAHAHA THEIR REASONING!!!!
Scarilian
Scarilian - 4/28/2018, 6:49 AM
Understandable from a business perspective - though changing it now is going to give them negative PR - especially considering we are entering the summer movies now which normally get repeat viewings.

I don't even know who MoviePass was :)
regularmovieguy
regularmovieguy - 4/28/2018, 7:38 AM
@DoubleD

I pay $10 a month and I can see a movie a day for free. If you see one movie a month it’s already paid for.
TheUnworthyThor

Really MoviePass? First you change it from one movie a day to 4 movies a month and now this?

BiggerLuke
BiggerLuke - 4/28/2018, 9:05 AM
@TheUnworthyThor - They have altered the deal. Pray they don't alter it any further.
Kyos
Kyos - 4/28/2018, 7:21 AM
So they went from "pay $10/month to watch as many different movies as you want as often as you like" to "pay $10/month to watch up to 4 different movies once"?
