SPOILERS: AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Writers Reveal Whether Or Not We'll See Death In The Movie

While it definitely sounds like the Thanos we're getting in Avengers: Infinity War will be comic book accurate, there are some things Joe and Anthony Russo had to drop in order to make the transition from page to screen a little easier. Unfortunately, it sounds like Death will be among them based on recent comments from the movie's screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely this week.

"At the very beginning, just because it’s such a focal point of the comics, we talked about it, but I think pretty quickly… it is not something that brings you closer to his motivation," McFeely explained.

"It’s not something where the average moviegoer says, 'Now I can kinda empathize with him because he’s in love with Death!' But I think we took that passion that he has… he really is in love with Death in the comics! He’s a lovelorn, kinda sad little fella. We wanted to maintain that level of emotion on his part, just redirected." That's fair enough but is bound to disappoint some fans.

In the comics, Thanos wants to wipe out half of all life in the universe so that Death will fall in love with him but that could have ended up being a little hokey on
screen so having his motivations be a result of what happened to Titan makes a whole lot more sense. After all, that's bound to make the Mad Titan more relatable and considering the fact he's this movie's lead, that's essential for Infinity War.

Are you disappointed about the lack of Death in this movie? Share your thoughts in the usual place.

While I'm still not thrilled with it, it is what it is - being in love with Death, didn't quite make me empathize with Thanos. But it gave him an interesting and seemingly different type of motivation than we were used to. (vs your standard "I want to rule everything" type of motivation)

@Kman -
To me, the Russo's just showed a complete and utter misunderstanding of Thanos.

Thanos never wanted to destroy half the universe, that was Death's goal. She brought him back for that purpose while Thanos who was excluded from society and not accepted by anyone, felt accepted by the only one who seemed to momentarily need him - Death.

To tease Death twice in the MCU prior via refrencing Death during the end credits of Avengers and then showing her as one of the four eternals in Guardians Of The Galaxy only to not deliver is very underwhelming.

It's also a bit of a contradiction, as Josh Brolin previously confirmed Death would appear;

In an interview, Josh Brolin expanded on Thanos' relationship with Death, and confirmed that Death will be portrayed as a woman in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: "His relationship with Death, who is actually the woman, I love that. You can take Sin City (in which Brolin plays a man obsessed with a dark-hearted woman) and pump it full of steroids, and then you have Thanos. I like that he’s motivated by that — not just motivated by destruction or death or this or that. He’s motivated by a very identifiable, human trait."

@Scarilian - the Death teasing bugs me too - Did Brolin make that comment after being recently cast? Maybe he was reading the source material at the time?

@ArmFallOffBoy - I didn't initially like that - but at this point I would take it I think

Technically they are talking about Infinity War, she could still show up in Avengers 4. I still believe Hela will return in Avengers 4.

@HeavyMetal4Life - she better.

I adored her, but she was underused in Ragnarok.

@StormXmen123 - loved her in Ragnarok, but yes, we need more Hela action

If he is expressing love (twisted as his version is) that makes us emphasize with him more as it is very human emotion.

While I can see his thinking in trying to "save" the universe by destroying half of life. I don't empathise with it. It's a psychopaths logic.

Do you really have to empathize with Thanos?

@regularmovieguy - You don't, at least not in this initial part of his arc.

I'd murder half the universe for this woman

Sounds fine to me. There is enough to pull from and utilize in the MCU already to make Thanos a worthy impressive foe.

"Empathize with Thanos" lol, good one. This is the guy who was fascinated by death, how it feels to murder and wanting to be an equal to the entity itself, you can't empathize with someone like that, not every villain has to be a Disney misunderstood emo guy/gal, there are people who are just evil and enjoy making others suffer. That is how Thanos was at first, he got development and became sort of an anti hero, sure but you can't get there without his failure of wanting to be an equal to Death.

Now he is some kind of General Zod fused with Alexander Pierce, it's been done before.

Jim Starlin said they do Thanos justice so hopefully we can trust his word.
