San Diego Comic-Con brought the news that the next big Marvel Cinematic Universe saga would culminate with two back-to-back Avengers movies in 2025, and we know know who will direct the first.
THR reports that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton has officially signed on to helm Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.
This is pretty major news to be revealed so soon after the movie's announcement, and even though there are a lot of MCU big and small screen projects to come between now and the time The Kang Dynasty hits theaters on May 2, 2025, it suggests Kevin Feige and co. are already looking well ahead and mapping out the Phase 6 finale.
No writer has been assigned to the project (that we know of), and we still have no idea which characters will make up the next incarnation of Earth's Mightiest Heroes. We should have a much clearer picture after Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania hits theaters next year, however.
All we do know about the next Avengers film is that it will focus on Jonathan Majors' villainous Kang the Conqueror, who will have a significant part to play over the next two phases of The MCU. Majors actually debuted as another "Variant" of the character, He Who Remains, in the season finale of Disney+'s Loki.
Cretton recently signed an overall deal with Marvel Studios, and is also developing a live-action Wonder Man series that he will exec produce and possibly direct, as well as a Shang-Chi sequel.
At SDCC, Marvel Studios also confirmed that Bassam Tariq is directing Blade; Julius Onah will helm Captain America: New World Order, and Jake Schreier is directing Thunderbolts.
