Marvel Studios Didn't Always Plan On Kang Being Focus Of Multiverse Saga; Jonathan Majors' Future Unclear

According to an insider, Marvel Studios didn't always plan on making Kang the Conqueror the Multiverse Saga's big bad, but it was Jonathan Majors who changed things. However, his MCU future remains uncertain.

In Loki's season 1 finale, we were introduced to Jonathan Majors' He Who Remains. It quickly became apparent that he was a Kang Variant, with Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania introducing us (all too briefly) to the Conqueror version of the villain.

It's obvious Kang is being lined up as the Multiverse Saga's big bad, though there are some questions about how that will work with Jonathan Majors' ongoing legal issues. A recast is possible as is a return should the actor clear his name, but it appears Marvel Studios didn't always plan on using this villain as the focal point of this Saga.

Speaking on The Ringer's The Big Picture podcast, author Joanna Robinson (MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios) shared some of what she's heard about how plans changed in the wake of Avengers: Endgame

"I was told by someone who works for Marvel, it was not the plan to make Kang the center of everything until they saw the dailies from 'Quantumania' and after his performance in 'Loki,'" she explains, "which was so strong they were like, 'This is it. This is our way forward. We’ve lost our varsity hero team, but let’s set up around this guy Kang and this performer that so many people are reacting to.'"

As well as penning this book, Robinson previously wrote for Vanity Fair. She'd go on to make a case for why Marvel Studios might have made a mistake by putting all its eggs in one basket after creating an entire slate of projects around one actor and character.

That wouldn't usually be too much of a problem, of course, but it's somewhat backfired in this instance due to Majors going from Hollywood's biggest up-and-coming star to one of its most controversial.

On that note, Robinson says, "That has put them in the bind. We do not know what they are going to do. I’ve heard conflicting stories about they are going to replace him, they’re not even considering replacing him."

We're guessing it will boil down to what happens when Majors gets his day in court, though there have already been rumblings about Marvel Studios putting a plan in place to move on from his interpretation of Kang in Loki season 2. Perhaps it's there we'll meet whoever was originally going to be this Saga's main antagonist?

That doesn’t make sense why have him pop up in multiple projects if the plan wasn’t to have him be the villain

@ShimmyShimmyYA - I think they want a way out of using Kang with all that's been going on with majors. You know, soulless corporate bs.

I'd imagine Kang might be written out after loki season 2 with them establishing a new threat. Then the Kang dynasty will have a new villain and title.

@Origame - 100%!
They’re probably going to replace Kang with Doom. That way their movies won’t have to deviate too far from the blueprint they already had established. What if they made Dr. Doom a variant of Kang? Eww! 😂🤣😂

@Origame - yeah I can see that sucks cause I did like majors but if he did it then he gotta hold this

I always assumed doom would be the SW villain anyway

@ShimmyShimmyYA - I seriously dont understand the need for this nonsense, it wasnt Disney's fault, just take the L and move on.

@ShimmyShimmyYA -

I also find this story hard to believe.

@abd00bie - Well, we've already seen that variants can resemble each other or not (i.e. Loki). So they could still have the Beyonder be a Kang variant but use a different actor. It wouldn't really be that hard to explain, unless the Beyonder is supposed to be the Kang we saw in "AM 3" just multiversally powered, and even then he could look different. Either way I don't think that it would be as big of a deal as if, for example, Tom Holland was in some kind of legal trouble for allegedly smacking Zendaya or something.

The source is writing a book on the first 15 years of Marvel Studios. She knows more than probably anyone, neckbeard or otherwise, on this site.

I mean he's playing a villain, ur supposed to hate him. If Josh Brolin slapped a lady around right before Endgame it woulda won Oscars

The whole idea stinks whether Major ends up playing multiple variants of Kang or not.

But whatever i guess, we just need an excuse to bring back everyone.

Bullshit, why say he's a bigger threat than Thanos if you wasn't going to have him as the big bad.

This Jonathan Majors issue shouldn't be a thing anymore... I'm tired of hearing about it, can they just make a decision already??

@xfan320 - Ezra Miller and Jonathan Majors should make a movie together after this.

This just sounds wrong. They shot Loki way before Ant-Man, they announced him as the big bad before even releasing Loki.

Just from a timeline perspective that makes zero sense. So I’d call bs on this

I never thought he was going to be the big bad. I always thought he was leading up to hyping someone who is the baddest of the bad.

You see this is what happens when you hijack Doom’s storyline.

OT: I just got my son all the retro FF Kenner toys, including Doom and Surfer. Indoctrinating him early ready for the movie.
