EDITORIAL: Why We Will See Two AVENGERS Sequels Before a THOR or CAP Sequel

I am well aware, that Thor and Cap both have sequels scheduled to be released within the next three years. However, if we all remember so did Wolverine's sequel (for 2012) and Sam Raimi's Spiderman 4. We will not see a sequel to Cap and Thor until after an Avengers trilogy.

I know that seems like blasphemy to die hard comic fans, but here is my logic. The Avengers will put up huge numbers at the box office. I'm talking Pirates of The Caribbean, Transformers type money. I fully expect this movie to make a billion dollars worldwide. Now, the people at Disney are very, very smart at making money, and they know nobody outside of hardcore comic fans are really clamoring for a Thor or Cap sequel. Let's be real, they are B-list characters anyway, and while the movies did well at the box office, they didn't exactly set the world on fire, nor got many people talking. The only reason we were treated to a Cap and Thor movie was to set up Disney and Marvel's next cash chow The Avengers. But, put them on a team with Iron Man and Hulk, and suddenly they are A list.

I fully expect at the end of the summer when the Avengers run at the box office is all but done, Disney will announce that the next two Avengers movies will be shot back to back (a la The Pirates of the Caribbean sequels), and be released in 2014 and 2015 respectively. They will sit out 2013 all together, which in the long run I believe will result in more money being made. Disney is too smart to over saturate the market with B list super hero movies, when they can make so much more money fast tracking two Avengers movies, which the majority of people care more about anyway.

Also, from a competition standpoint an Avengers movie will make much more money for Disney then releasing solo flicks. Remember after this year Batman will take at least a five year hiatus, a Superman sequel won't be released until 2016 at the earliest, and yes, no twilight films either. The competition will be quite weak, and an Avengers sequel could make more than the first movie easily because of that. The only comic book movie that could compete with it would be a First Class sequel and anything with the name Spider man in it. Also, if this movie receives good reviews, and gets people talking (I'm expecting an 85% tomatometer rating), then anticipation for a sequel will be quite high, and with no competition the movie would make a killing.

Now, and this is my just my personal opinion, I would love for more Avengers movies than solo movies starring Cap, Thor and even Iron Man. I just think that the quality of The Avengers movies will be much higher.

I also think Disney and Marvel will look to make solo films for Cap and Thor after 2015, although, who knows what properties they could have by then?

This is the dumbest editorial I've read in quite awhile. Please post more about how you know absolutely nothing about the movie business, and how smart you are for making idiot predictions. Especially when you acknowledge that you're most certainly wrong, and ask us to follow your "logic". Jesus, just go away.

It's just opinion guys chill out. A lot of haters oh well. Nobody forced you to read it. I think The Avengers will make a billion, and then I think the next two will be shot back to back. I didn't put it on main, and truth be told I wrote it on my phone after talking about it with some friends. Disney did it with Pirates, and I think the Avengers will be as big a franchise.

Good points, but your reasons still give Disney mroe of a reason to release as many movies as they can based on superheroes whether it's good for the industry in the long run or not. Just look at Pixar, they used to make movies every 3 years, now they're making one every year and I think the rumor is eventually they'll be releasing two per year. Bottom line is as long as superhero movies are being made and are half decent, people will see them. I agree though for the long term success of the superhero industry, it would be best to not release so many at once.

Tell me why this wouldn't make sense. If the Avengers is a billion dollar franchise, which is what I expect it to be, then why not make two movies back to back. How many billion dollar franchises are their left? Four? Why waste time making movies that people outside of the comic book community really don't care about, and make something that appeals to more people and can make a lot more money.

Ya, and it's scheduled to be released in 2013.

With that said, I don't think there will be an Avengers sequel before Thor's sequel. Maybe Cap... but I still don't know about that.

Guess you'll just have to see what the phase 2 plans are.

I can pretty much guarantee it will involve more established characters solo films and the inclusion of one or 2 more being introduced before the next Avengers film.

this is impossible marvel comes out with at least one movie every yr and considering that all of marvel studios movies have so far earned a very decent ammount individually why would the Avengers be singled out? It probably will make money but it would be idiotic if marvel rushed it thereby eliminating any or most of the profit for the movie. And marvel didnt make thor and captain america to earn enough for a proper avengers movie they made them to introduce the audience to the characters and the story before the avengers movie came out. And so far that took 5 movies spanned 3 yrs.

I don't know, like I said billion dollar franchises are rare, and if The Avengers becomes one everything will get pushed to the back burner. While Thor and Cap did well, let's be real they aren't in the billion dollar club. Remember this is Disney we are talking about. Like I said it's an opinion, and for those that are giving feedback I love to debate.

Cap and Thor underperformed from a studio perspective. They did well but like I said they didn't get people talking nor did they real set the box office on fire. The Avengers can do all this, and if the first movie does really well, and gets people talking we are all but assured a sequel before Thor and Cap 2.
