Hawkeye Will Not Have His Purple Costume From The Comics In The Avengers

In an interview with MTV, Jeremy Renner reveals that we will not see him don the classic purple getup from the comics when he appears as Hawkeye in The Avengers. He also hints at a romantic relationship between his character and Black Widow(Scarlett Johansson)

I think we all assumed that Hawkeye's classic purple gear wouldn't be making an appearance on the big screen. But would it be the Ultimates costume then? A combination of both? MTV put those very questions to Renner..

"I think it's going to be a little more reality-based, you can kind of tell with Scarlett [Johansson]'s character [in 'Iron Man 2'], it's going to be more of a uniform . . . and not a big purple, comics sort of thing."

"That's why I think it's more palatable to audiences — there's almost a sense of reality to these superheroes, That's what makes it interesting to me, anyway."

In the comics, Hawkeye and Black Widow have been known to "hook up" at times. Will we see that in the movie?

"We will [have a relationship], I think, in this one as well, we're kind of a team, and what that relationship is, is still to be discovered."

I'll take that as a yes! Expect Johansson and Renner to share a few clinches in The Avengers. As for the costume, well I for one am glad they won't be going for the classic look in its entirety, although a nod to it would be nice. I hope they don't go completely Ultimate on it either though. If you watch the vid accompanying the interview, when Renner is explaining what we won't be seeing costume wise, he makes a gesture to his head and makes the shape of Hawkeye's Wolverine style mask. I think its a safe bet, whatever the costume turns out like, we won't see that in any way shape or form!

"You can kind of tell with Scarlett [Johansson]'s character [in 'Iron Man 2'], it's going to be more of a uniform

Her Uniform in Iron Man 2 is almost identical to her classic costume, complete with wrist blasters. Iron Mans armor, is spot on. Thor's costume is a mixture of costumes and Caps is a strange mixture of stuff that is in the comics.

I doubt we will see full on classic Hawkeye but I would bet it's going to be a mix of something that we will recognize.

I think renner is going to naill this part once they start filming but he needs to learn Clive's real name and a little more about the other characters before he offers too much more info.

In his older statements he said that the studio said Hawkeye wouldn't have the big purple and blue masked get up that he has in the comics. That doesn't mean he won't resemble one or more of his costumes in any way.

Great find ROR!

I wonder what kind of personality Clint will have, and if it'll be different from the other Avengers. If Marvel would have hired a younger actor for the role, I could definitely see the cocky, I can do it all, thing.

telavizion: Hawkeye and the Black Widow have been doin the hibbitydibbity off and on since the 60's.
It makes perfect sense that they would in the movie.

It also explains why there is no Hank and Jan. How many relationships do they want going on within the team at once?

DCMF: Marvel seems like they are nailing the personality of the characters they are bringing to life. I sure hope they give us smart ass Barton. After all, that's what made Hawkeye famous. If they get his smart ass, womanizing, version of Cap personality right, I don't care what costume they put him in.

@Hawksblueyes You see, I think Tony has the smart ass thing going on, that's why I'm curios if it would be different from the others.

With Renner's age, I could definitely see him as the guy who takes his job too serious. But if hes gonna be a smart ass, I wish they would have cast someone younger...like Jensen Ackles or Pine...yeah another Chris. lol

No one should be surprised about the costume thing, he said in December last year, "it's going to be modernized, it's not going to be the guy with the big purple [mask], it's not going to be a guy in tights. It's going to be a guy in sunglasses and a vest. He's going to be more modernized and I'm gonna say, 'A cooler-looking version' and not the big weird costume he had on. I don't think they're going that route."

Next they'll be saying Chris Evans won't go BLONDE!

DCMF: Stark is more arrogant than smart ass, very similar to many runs in the comics. Stark and Barton have never got along for very long at a stretch, without getting into it. Although they are freinds, they don't like each other very much at all. Smart ass Clint would fit perfectly with the on screen version of Stark.

Yeah but MF, that was before he was even confirmed for the part! He was just guessing the route they would go. Now one would assume he has talked about it with Whedon and has a fair idea how they WILL go.

Let's face it... a guy in a big purple costume would just be cheesy on the big screen. There is no way around that. Black Widow is a terrible example, because all you need to do is stick her in some tight-tights and there you go.

I love how the article icon isn't even Clint Barton.

The current look the the ultimates series is good, I like the mask! The costume form ultimates 1 & 2 does not look that good. If they even went with his golden uniform from avengers reborn that would be okay. He is too much of an iconic character to change that much.

I think that as a fan nod they should throw the purple in there somewhere. Dark purple.

I bet he will be wearing around a lot more gear than Black Widow did and they could make that of some kind of dark purple hue.
They could make the finish on his weapons dark purple as well without it being cheesy or stupid. I don't think that would hurt. Nor would a mask, but without the little Wolverine points.

Great to us, yes.

I don't think it's the kind of thing that translates well to a live action mainstream film. I didn't for a second think they would be using his comic book outfit in this movie. It just looks silly.

@Sto0pidpenguinpro - Yes! I was wondering if I was the only guy who knew that was actually Bullseye.

@Hawksblueyes - Have you seen the Next Avengers DVD? I like the part where Tony asks Hawkeye's son for help.

Hawkeye's son - "Do you know what my dad would have done?"
Tony - "Clint? He would have punched me in the face! Then he would have helped."
Hawkeye's son - "Wow. You really knew my dad."

I agree. It's funny how there are some superheros that are so iconic, filmakers must think, oh well we have to use their traditional costume (ie, Spider-man, Iron Man, Superman). Yet when it comes to less iconic characters, they feel they have a free pass to use different costumes. That's why I don't understand Bryan Singer's move to get rid of traditional costumes in X-men, but when it comes to Superman, it's a-ok.

Great find ROR! I'd personally be perfectly happy with the costume in the picture you've used at the top of this article...it still has some purple in but looks a lot less silly and cartoonish. More important to me is that we dont end up with a Hawkeye who has the Ultimate style personality. That guy is a [foo foo] and his new costume looks like shit IMO. :P

Moltenman
Moltenman - 9/15/2010, 12:54 PM
I am wondering how he is going to be introduced into the film. Is The Avengers going to be our first look at him or are we going to see him before then? Perhaps in Thor or Captain America. I like hawkeye but if his introduction is going to be in the Avengers then are they just going to slide him in as important shield guy or are we going to get the character fleshed out. Which wouldn't be a bad thing but it would take up valuable screen time in the movie.

Really? Why does everyone like classic Hawkeye so much? Purple costume, bucaneer boots, pointy wolverine mask, and a loin cloth? This would look good on screen how? It doesn't even look good in the comics.
As for the argument as to why Singer changed the X-men costumes and not Superman. Every in the world knows who Superman is and what he looks like. Cyclops? Jean Grey? Even Wolverine have only a small percentage of that popularity.
