Marvel Assured Big-Name Actors Aren't Needed

Here is info from Disney/Marvel shareholder Ike Perlmutter, who is helping Marvel to realize pricey actors aren't needed for their films. Check It Out!

From the New York Post; Enemy of highly paid Hollywood superstars & a hero to budget-conscious studio chiefs, Ike Perlmutter is the Israeli investor who became the second-largest shareholder in Disney when Disney bought his Marvel Entertainment last year.

"His whole MO [modus operandi] is to take on the star system," said a Page Six source.

When Tom Cruise would have charged $20 million to star in the first "Iron Man" (2008), Perlmutter opted for rehabbed Robert Downey Jr., who was on the rise of a comeback.

When Terrence Howard asked for too much money to reprise his role in the "Iron Man" sequel, Perlmutter went out and got Don Cheadle.

The relatively cheap Chris Evans will star in "Captain America," and Chris Hemsworth -- who? -- is "Thor," filming now in LA and New Mexico.

A Marvel spokeswoman conceded Perlmutter and his team "definitely are negotiators." But there is also the idea at Marvel that big-name actors aren't needed.

"Cruise's people reached out, but Marvel decided they didn't want the actor to overshadow the superhero. They are great at transforming [less famous] actors into superheroes," one source told us. Another said, "They think the franchises speak for themselves. Ike doesn't play Hollywood games."

Movie City News blogger David Poland recently reported, "It was getting crazy for a while there -- $20 million salaries were becoming standard for a lot of actors who didn't deserve them.

"The big story . . . was Tom Cruise taking home $60 million for 'Mission: Impossible 4' while Paramount barely covered its costs," Poland continued. "But I am not sure we need to start a charity for actors getting paid $7 million up front instead of $13 million, or $10 million instead of $25 million."

DCMF: I think this is a great approach, because I feel that all the major characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, like Nick Fury & Tony Stark, have already taken care of the big-name leads, while the remaining characters could use some fresh stars. But you got to admit big name folks sure do bring an audience to something fresh. What do you think?

I'm glad Marvel didn't go thru with Tom Cruise because that's 'F'ing ridiculous. I really hope Chris Hemsworth's performance can prove this idea a great one.

[frick] movie stars! gotta get ACTORS! find them anywhere. theatres, colleges, there are so many talented people out there who aren't known at all. and i think the perception of a "movie star" has changed a lot. people don't really like them anymore save for a FEW. actors don't sell movies, stories do. how much did the last cloony movie gross? what has julia roberts done for me lately?

kudos to marvel for bringing us a new generation of stars!

I could care less if the actor is famous or not as long as they can portray the role and their fame and identity as an actor doesn't overshadow the role. RDJ plays Tony to a T. If they're famous, great, more liklihood to draw in crowds, if they're not, whatever, but if they can't do the role justice, the film is gonna suck.

its good that they looking for actors who are less costly also actors who are underrated or unknown. its time to stop using the same big name actors to sell a movie.

i guess when people mention Will Smith to play a certain role they better think twice now.

p.s. i like Will Smith but everytime people keep on mention his name for every Marvel comic book movie.

a LOT of movies suffer from the stars name, not just superhero films. for example, another tom cruise film "Valkyrie" was totally killed, in my opinion, because of cruise's star status (and his horrible acting). i really think if they had gone with a lesser known, the movie wouldve been 100 times better.

with superhero films, ghost rider, daredevil, and catwoman all suffered from the star getting in the way syndrome.

sure RDJ and Norton have massive skills, but they arent (werent) MEGA stars before the superhero movies.

People I would like to apologize for the inaccurate title, because I misread the article. Ike Perlmutter was already with Marvel before the merger.

@HelaGood I agree with you entirely. The movies you listed really did suffer because of that. I think certain characters should stay away from stars, unless they are truly made for the role.

@Helagood
The stars portraying the superheroes in the movies you mentioned did cause them to suffer to a certain extent, but you also can't forget the crappy scripts.

I love how people love this but then go ahead and sign the Norton for Hulk petition....quiet frankly Norton was OK at best, every loves him because the comparison (Eric Bana) sucked!!! There are plenty of less priced actors that can due Banner/Hulk.

fanboiii - 5/19/2010, 3:59 PM
Marvel has some big names already signed. Maybe they just aren't greedy. Soon enough most actors will line up and glady take a pay cut to be in a Marvel movie.

jazzman - 5/19/2010, 4:00 PM
heres another problem what happen if these lesser known actors become very big in other movies and etc. would their paycheck be bigger too. if these actors do a sequel for a Marvel movie again you telling me Marvel Studio just not pay them and just replace them with a cheap actor.
FrankDrebin
FrankDrebin - 5/19/2010, 4:00 PM
I thought he nailed that role and I can't imagine anyone else as bruce after that, or maybe you can find someone who does it even better. But why fix something that´s not broken?

Who could do Bruce Banner better than Norton? I can't think of anyone. Then again, it could be argued that there's not much to the character depending on what story lines you look at.

I am very much behind this Idea. While I love Willem Dafoe as an actor, in SpiderMan he wasn't Norman Osborne He was Willem Dafoe. Big name actors tend to inject their own perceived presence into many roles. Can you imagine what it would be like if Nick Cage was cast as Captain America? I like Nick Cage but He is totally wrong for Cap. Look at Batman and Robin.... Arnold as Mr. Freeze!? WTF!? That was so stupid, and all because of his High Profile name. Now Maybe Clint Eastwood as Nick Fury Back in the '80s......that would have been cool. But that is type casting Just like SLJ as Fury now. I would rather see a good unknown actor become the character than see a big name actor take the role and do what He/She wants with it. Judge Dredd/ Stallone anyone. Awright I gotta go to work! Later guys!!

I have been watching Supernatural lately and I gotta say I agree w/ LEEE. Ackles is perfect for Hawkeye! His personality in Supernatural would transfer well into a superhero movie no doubt! And he is a pretty good actor, but still cheap!
