When Joss Whedon was asked how he would approach Avengers 2, he responded with “By not trying to go bigger. By being smaller. More personal, more painful." (1) This leads me to believe that it has to do with villains from their past films. Let's take a look at who that might include:

During a recent twitter Q&A, Kevin Feige was asked "Will we see Extremis again after IM3?" and his response was "Yes." (2) Keep in mind that we never see Killian's body at the end of IM3 (or Savin's, either). As for Thor, maybe Malekith lives or perhaps the Enchantress or Executioner is mentioned/cameoed in TDW.

During a radio interview, the host asked Frank Grillo if he was "making more Crossbones appearances after Captain America: The Winter Soldier, to which Frank modestly confirmed. “Yeah, it's a good run,” Frank Grillo said." (3) And maybe Robert Redford's character in CA: TWS will actually be Baron Zemo or perhaps Thanos rescues the Red Skull from the dimension he was sent at the end of TFA.

In the Marvel one-shot The Consultant, Agents Coulson and Sitwell discuss the fact that the Abomination survived and is in SHIELD custody and that the World Security Council wanted him released in order to join the Avengers Initiative. So we know Blonsky is alive and there is a rumor that SHIELD's actual HQ, Triskelion, will be featured in CA 2 and this base is the location of a super-villain prison in the Ultimate comic universe. (4)

I'm guessing that Thanos' back story is fleshed out a little in Guardians of the Galaxy (who he likely defeats and/or kills to heighten the stakes and highlight how dangerous he is) then he rounds up these villains to take on the Avengers, similiar to his approach using Loki but with his idea being that this time, these villains know all our heroes weaknesses. They would, of course, be defeated and this would make Thanos the puppet master of the trilogy and set the stage for the final showdown in Avengers 3, after he presumably acquires the Infinity Gauntlet (which would just make him too powerful in the MCU) or the Tessaract (which could make a bookend on the trilogy since we've yet to see it's true power). When Whedon was recently asked about Thanos, his response was “Thanos is more powerful. He’s not someone you just trot out and punch him. Like you did in the comics, you want him to be threading through the universe and to save the big finale for the big finale." (5)

Just like the avengers, the masters of evil have to be build up. So far, none of the phase 1 or 2 movies have hinted at a future potential team up with villains.

I'm still writing my speculation, should be posted next week or so.

@King I am starting to think Avengers 3 is going to be (and should be) a 2-parter in order to weave in all the story lines.

If they do Masters of evil, they have to cast Vin Diesel as Absorbing Man. Hes such a great villain, perfect for that type of scenario. He needs to be redeemed after the Hulk film that Ang Lee directed.

Radioactive Man too, but I have no fancast for him. Are there any good chinese actors that would look really imposing? I guess he doesn't need to be huge, but it would look awesome on screen.

think everyone will be killed by thanos but then lets say odin brings them back to life useing the power of the tesseract which nearly kills him(or it could kill him). i think shield will introduce a few minor villians that could make and appearance, or maybe some of hawkeyes villians are in the triskillion prison thing. and regarding killian in the iron man 3 game he is MODOK wich is why in iron man 3 i would have made the mandarin the mandarin and make it appear as though killian killed himself(like in the comics) but in actuallity he had hes mind transfered into MODOK, and then i would have had a after credit scene where its dark and the light if blinking on and off and we can see an outline of modok.

yeah i thought i was interesting which is why i thought it was worth a mention, i imagine MODOK as being the villan they all under estimate at first glace but then they are overwhelmed by him, but i think it will be difficult to make a floating head look good on the big screen.
kinghulk
kinghulk - 7/7/2013, 2:23 AM
or they could save MODOK for a second hulk film and have him create red hulk that would be cool.
kinghulk
kinghulk - 7/7/2013, 6:04 AM
i would like to see absorbing man absorb thors hammer like he did in a episode of avengers earths mightiest heroes that would be cool.

I never got the Absorbing Man absorbing Mjolnir. Wouldn't Thor just be able to command him? Hehehe...

Anyway, I really doubt they are going to follow up Marvel's MOST SUCCESSFUL movie with a sequel rehashing old fights and grudges that we've already seen before. I could be wrong, because if you look at the Batman movies - it's like the only exclusive villains we can get are Ra's, Scarecrow, Riddler, and the Penguin... even Talia is just a bastard version of Ra's.

I think it's going to be what separates SHIELD from the Avengers completely, digging up old secrets that we haven't seen before - visiting bedmates that aren't going to sit well at all with Cap.

Maybe Baron Zemo, the Red Room... I really don't think it's a matter of WHO, but what. What type of control are the Avengers going to be deposing? I really don't think they're going to just trust Banner not to storm around whenever he wants, even if he helped save Manhattan. But that's something that they'll also want to dip into with the other characters - they aren't soldiers (not really), not humanity's police, and they don't answer to some authority - so who keeps them in check? How can they be relied upon?

I think we'll get some crazy experiments. Probably Ultron.

i would love to see ultron, they could go all age of ultron (without the time travel) and do a part 1 part 2 kind of film. ultron is one of my favorite villian what they should do is have him appear as a good guy/helper in ant man then have a after credit scene where he has gone rogue it could be because something happend to him in the final battle of the film. then have him be refernced to in all the film in after credit scenes or appear on a telly in some random scene.

then he appears in ant man 2 as a villian where it looks like he is destroyed but it turnes out only his old obselite body was destroyed and now he will begin his master plan to destroy his father and all of humanity.

I'm gonna throw a monkey wrench in my own gears here - Ant-Man is not guaranteed, nor do we really have any reason to believe that he'll appear in the Avengers sequel in 2015. Meaning Ultron would be appearing in the third outing, OR in a different crossover that features a larger MCU.

For a while, I had thought what AlexanderLykins had said was exactly how it would be - that Pym would use his size manipulation to steal secrets for SHIELD, and develop Ultron as a failsafe. Not a great start to the character though.

regarding ant man they could have him in the avengers and explain it as ime being on shields radar for a while, or maybe he appears as a normal scientist and not the hero he will be. but it makes good business sense intoduceing him in the avengers 2 cos i think a lot of people will here ant man and think well that crap, but if theve already seen him they might want to see him again. who do u think would be a villian in a ant man film im thinking either aim(because kevin feige said they would appear again) or radioactive man.

i also think they should do a part 1 part2 thing for the final avengers film and release them lets say 6 months apart and have the dvd of the first one released before the 2nd come out in cinemas.

Personally, I never understood what the big deal was with Thanos.
I get that he's this outcast turned crazy genocidal, but his motivations are some of the most ridiculous ideas I've ever read. He's in love with Death (who may or may not actually exist - so in the movies he may just be completely schizophrenic) and decides to kill off most of the universe to impress her? She's not pleased, so she curses him with immortality?

So yeah, right now, to at least 98% of the world's population, Thanos is a purple alien.

My sister's ex thought he had something to do with Green Lantern, cuz he's in space and all.

I think it was a big mistake to go with him in the beginning, mostly because of how powerful he is. It's like going with Darkseid as your opening. You really don't get any more powerful, and afterwards, what are you left with? And clearly this is a franchise built for sequels, not some movie where you're just happy with one movie and never a reboot imaginable.

I don't know. I hope Thanos impresses me when he does come about. I owe Marvel the benefit of the doubt on that one.

Great article.

I've been thinking something similar for a while with a Masters of Evil type team using unresolved characters (Red Skull, The Leader, Abomination, Justin Hammer, AIM, Hydra etc).

Then I was thinking it would be a Weapon based plot; http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/SuperheroSpeculation/news/?a=81844

However with Quicksilver & Scarlet Witch I think it will revolve around weaponised humans. This has been seen in many of the MCU films, in particular 'Captain America', 'The Incredible Hulk' and 'Iron Man 3'. I think Extremis and the brainslot will be key plot points with Q&SW being the result of SHIELD experiments and initally bad guys.

@dellamorte1872 How will they explain superheroes being born naturally? They are not allowed to use the Mutant aspect of QS/SW...
