Villains of The Avengers

Villains of The Avengers

The biggest question on everyone's mind, as seen through the mind of a Burglar of Corndogs!

With The Avengers film already being shot, and less than a year away from being released, the biggest question on everyone's mind is...who will they face? The villain(s) of this film will need to be something serious to make Fury want to form a team of super heroes, yet, because it is the first film, the threat can not be something over the top. We've all heard rumors of certain villains appearing and we all have villains that we would personally like to see. I'm going to go through some of the possible villains of this film chosen out of The Avengers' rogues gallery and hopefully try to make some sense out of who seems more plausible. Let the fun begin, shall we? Well...shall we? Okay, here we go!

Loki: God of Mischief and Lies

Loki has already been confirmed as being part of the main threat in this film. He still deserves to be included because he will definately have some kind of effect on the other villain(s) that will be appearing. SPOILER: In the after credit scene of Thor, we see Loki mind controlling a scientist. The scientist is meeting with Nick Fury. Fury shows him the Cosmic Cube and we can see Loki smiling as he looks upon the Cube. Its easy to assume that Loki is trying to gain control of the Cosmic Cube for his own purposes. Thor was able to defeat Loki by himself, so its very easy to think that he will not be the only villain. Also, it has been confirmed that another "BIG" threat will be appearing.

Ultron

A lot of people would love to see Ultron on screen, me included. However, I think this is highly unlikely for a number of reasons. First of all, Ultron is the Avengers arch-nemesis. Putting him in the first movie would be kind of counter-productive. We also know that Hank Pym creates Ultron. Hank has not been introduced as of yet, and its still in question if he will appear in The Avengers. Also, with everything else going on that we already know of, I think they would be cramming too much into the movie if they did Ultron. It would be best if it showed Hank building him, and possibly activating him, red glowing eyes turning on and all, during the after credits scene to lead into Avengers 2.

Kang The Conqueror: Master of Time

Kang would also make a decent villain to put in a movie, assuming you are the type of person who likes time traveling stories. I think he is even less likely than Ultron. In the comics, Kang kind of always just appears out of nowhere, or more appropriately, anywhen. There is usually no warning of when he will appear. Its part of his charm, you see, as he does not exist in our time. No one would be able to have any idea of when he was going to pop up, and therefore, would never have even heard of him. Fury definately seems to have some kind of agenda for forming the Avengers. I don't think the Hulk is his only reason for putting together a team. I could be wrong, but it definately seems to me like he knows of some other threat that requires the attention of multiple heroes. Kang would not fit that threat, as no one would see him coming.

Red Skull

SPOILER: The last time we saw Red Skull he was being pulled through a portal created by the Cosmic Cube. It definately looked like he was being pulled into one of the other realms depicted in Thor. He could be likely as a candidate, but I don't think so. I find it hard to believe that Marvel would make this hugely anticipated movie, and just reuse the same two villains from previous films. Again, Whedon recently stated that the second threat in the film would be "HUGE". This secrecy leads me to believe that it is going to be something we have yet to see in a Marvel movie, and lets face it, Loki and Red Skull teaming up just seems a little underwhelming.

Masters of Evil

I'll admit, I would love to see a movie based on the classic Avengers story where the Masters of Evil break into Avengers Mansion and lay waste to everyone and everything. But the bottom line is that there have not been enough villains introduced to make them the threat in this film. When you get down to it, there are only three villains introduced that could be used. Loki, Red Skull, and Abomination. The rest of the team would need to be introduced during the movie and that just isn't going to happen.

The Wrecking Crew

Come on, look at these guys. Yes, I realize they are very powerful, but really? Does anyone honestly feel like Marvel would include them in this? Look how cheesy these clowns are. Construction workers with magically enchanted construction tools. Riiiiiiight. I thought they were worth mentioning because I have actually seen some people on this site and around the web bring them up as people they would like to see. In my eyes its obvious they will not be involved, probably ever.

Fin Fang Foom: Alien Dragon

As cool as it would be to see this monster on screen, I can assure you it will never happen. It would turn this film into a giant rampaging monster film, and the only characters that could even really hurt him would be Iron Man and Thor. What are the other Avengers going to be doing while they square off against him? If anything, he would appear in an Iron Man movie, but thats also something I can't see happening. Iron Man has many more believable villains to use, like the Mandarin. I just can not wrap my head around him appearing in The Avengers, or anything for that matter.

Hulk: Rampaging Green Goliath

While it is pretty much expected by everyone who has been paying attention, the Avengers, or at least some of their members, will be throwing down with the Hulk at some point. Could he be the "HUGE" threat mentioned? Could be. I have a hard time believing that Loki controlling the Hulk is all this movie is going to be about though. I would also guess that Loki will not be controlling the Hulk at all. He has already been on a rampage through populated areas, so there doesn't need to be any other reason for SHIELD to want to bring him in. I'm guessing that the Avengers' first mission will be to bring in the Hulk. After doing so, Banner will be held captive and studied while SHIELD scientists try to find a cure. I also believe that whatever the main, "HUGE" threat is, will be so dangerous that SHIELD will have no other choice but to point the Hulk at it like a weapon.

Thanos: Avatar of Death

There is not a single fan of Marvel comics who would not absolutely love to see this guy on film. Thanos is arguably one of the most powerful and cunning beings in the universe. Unfortunately, this is also the reason why I say thee nay! He is simply too powerful for the Avengers to take on in their first film. They will already be too busy trying to learn to get along with each other and fight as a team, so they will not even be at their best yet. On top of that, none of the Avengers in this film are anywhere near on par with his might. It would be like the Blade films. Yes, I know everyone loved the first two Blade films, but I always had one problem with them. They threw their biggest gun at Blade in the first movie. The vampire god. How do you beat that as far as threatening villains go? Even Dracula, the first vampire, wouldn't compare to a god, right? Well this is the same reasoning I'm using here. If they throw Thanos at the Avengers in the first movie, no other villains will be able to compare after that. Save him for the third movie.

Skrulls: Shapeshifting Aliens

In my humble opinion, these guys make the most all around sense. The story that Marvel has been building toward almost points directly at them as being the other "HUGE" threat. I would like to go on record and say that there are already an advanced scouting party of Skrulls on Earth and Fury/SHIELD is fully aware of them. The power of the Cosmic Cube has called to them from across the cosmos and they need its power to fix their dying planet. I believe that Skrulls are already impersonating certain characters, and have infiltrated certain parts of Earth in hopes of gaining control of the Cube. Knowing this, Fury has decided to do the only thing he can think of, form Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Where does Loki fit in? Who knows. Maybe he is manipulating them, or perhaps when he gains control of the Cube he uses it and it sets off a flare across the galaxy that alerts the Skrulls and their entire armada to its exact location, initiating an invasion. Those are just my thoughts based solely on what we know, and certain rumors that we have heard that seem to fit in perfectly with what is confirmed. Another point I would like to make is that it seems as if these movies draw quite a bit of elements from the Ultimate Universe. Anyone who has read the Ultimates Volume 1 knows that this story would be similar in a lot of ways. Mainly, the WAY the Avengers are formed, and WHY they are formed.

Okay, so there you have it. My opinions on why certain villains will or will not be appearing. I put a lot of thought into each candidate, so I'm really looking forward to hearing everyone's opinions.

Thanks for reading and as always, EXCELSIOR!

No Ultron without Ant-man.

Those pictures are very cool, but neither Hank Pym or Scott Lang or Eric O'Grady are going to be in the Avengers so that means no Ultron or Vision, or Ant-Man. It is more likely that Sam Jackson's space scenes are the after credits sequences that will lead to the Skrulls or Shitari in Avengers 2.

I thought it was the Skrulls too but idk now... it seems that what I've been hearing is that they are saved for the sequel? so who is it I honestly have no idea... lol

Skrull it's too massive for the first movie. I suggest Loki and Ultron. Ultron is suppose to be Stark's malware armor.

not really. If the Skrulls know where the Cube is, then they wouldn't have to invade the entire planet, just the area where the cube is. Like i said, before they invade, they've got agents already impersonating people and scoping things out.

you're right, but there are rumors that Hank Pym might appear in Avengers. Not as Ant-Man, but just as Pym.

The Ant-Man movie is supposedly going to be the 60's.

Awesome write up @CorndogBurglar. It's got to be the Skrulls. Fury wouldn't just assemble them to fight for SHIELD, always seemed to more as if he wanted people who he could trust to protect a valuable resource. And now we know that would be the Cosmic Cube. Plus a war to protect investments in resources will make the film relatable to world events... and I like invasion flicks.

I really want the skrulls to be the villains, but it's really going to be hard to make it look like the final battle isn't going to be a war like in the Ultimates.

loki & a rampaging hulk would be a nice homage to the avengers 1,but saying that i would still love to see additional villain thanos would be nice.

the avengers 2 i would like to see ultron or kang or even both in the sequel.

the avengers 3 the masters of evil i think this could work if done correctly, just take a look at x-men first class that gave us two teams going at it.

thanks man! i agree. The end of Incredible Hulk would lead one to believe that they are being formed to bring in the Hulk. I think that is part of it, but i still feel like Fury has another agenda. Like maybe he knows that having the Hulk on their side would be a great aspect about this "secret skrull invasion" going on.

but hey, i could be completely wrong, but the Skrulls seem to make the most sense with the plot details we already know about. I can't really see any of the other villains fitting in, while the Skrulls would fit perfectly.

i never liked the idea of the hulk as a villian, in TIH movie, he seemed too controled in his fight with abomination, he wasnt attacking randoms on the street, abomination was his target nd he went after him, if whedon wants to keep continuity with the TIH, then Hulk shouldnt be made a villian.

This is what we know for sure.

We got Cap, Ironman, Thor, Hawkeye and Black widow.
We got the Hulk
We got Sheild
We got the cosmic cube.(but no Red Skull)
We got Loki.

It is a pretty big line up without bringing in a new bad guy.

There has been no leaks of any new villan or any other actors to play this threat.

Im thinking Loki gets the cube and sends Hulk on a rampage. The Avengers are formed to stop the Hulk there is a big fight. Loki is caught and hulk is "OK" again.

This is plenty enough to fill a 2.5hr movie.

Then they will set it up for the next big threat.

I don't mind seeing Loki in the Avengers film but just as a subsidiary/supporting villain.

I'm mindful that in the comics he was the original villain for the Avengers and indeed the reason for them coming together.

I don't see why Thanos couldn't make an appearance. Of course a Thanos with the infinity gauntlet is too insanely powerful. Though as always it depends how its written.

@CDB..NICE BRO!..THIS ARTICLE SHOULD REALLY NARROW THINGS DOWN FOR PPL..THE SKRULLS SEEM TO MAKE MORE SENSE..HULK IS A PRIORITY FOR FURY SEEING THAT GEN.ROSS LOST ALL CONTROL OF THE SITIUATION. PPL NEED TO REALIZE THAT THE TEAM MAY BE USED TO BRING HULK IN TO HELP BANNER.WHICH WILL CAUSE SOME BATTLES WITH HULK..

LOKI WILL PLAY A HUGE PART I THINK HE CAUSES CHAOS AND DISTRACTS SHIELD/AVENGERS..STEALS THE CUBE..BUT 1ST WE NEED TO SEE WHERE DID LOKI GO WHEN HE FELL AFTER THE FIGHT WITH THOR..AND EXACTLY WHEN IN THE TIMELINE DID THE THOR AFTER CREDITS TAKE PLACE WITH FURY SHOWING SELVAG THE CUBE..

I ALWAYS SAY THAT FURY KNEW OF THIS THREAT B4 THE EVENTS OF THOR & LOKI..I COULD BE WRONG..ITS ALL IT THE TIMELINE AND HOW THESE AFTER CREDITS,SHORT FILMS WITH COULSON,AND THE MOVIES FIT TOGETHER AND OVERLAP..SO IS FURY PUTTING THIS TEAM TOGETHER MAINLY FOR HULK @ 1ST OR IS THERE THINGS HE FORSEE THAT MAKES HIM START THE INITIATIVE..

IMO I THINK JOSS IS TAKING IDEAS FROM THE ULTIMATE AVENGERS DVD TOON VOL 1 & 2..

Hulk has been confirmed to be a member of The Avengers in this film. That doesn't mean he won't be a villain, but still, I wouldn't call it very likely for him to be the big threat.
On the other hand, I agree with you about the Skrulls. The Avengers were being formed long before humans knew about Loki.

DISNEY/MARVEL seriously needs to go and acquire rights to all of the characters that they possibly can. (SONY/FOX)

These movie have so much more potential with the correct characters in them.

I love RedHood13 idea for the trilogy but,... I'm gonna go on a limb and say Ultron for the sequel even though I have the slightest clue how they will incorporate him without Pym.
Use Thanos for the 3rd installment so that he can somehow be the lead up to Guardians of The Galaxy!
KANG and/or Thanos can be the villain(s) for their film.

Nice write up CDB. I gotta say that the most likely threat is the Skrulls. I was looking at the list of actors/characters on IMDB a few days ago, and I saw various characters in the movie who I thought would be ideal if they turned out to be Skrulls. It would be epic if someone working for Shield was actually a Skrull.

I remember seeing mentioned on this site that Loki could be leading an invasion force of frost giants and others from the nine realms.

I would also like to mention that keep in mind who wrote and is directing - i.e. Joss Whedon. If you look at some of the villains he threw at Buffy (e.g. Glory), then you know the man has a penant for using major villains with lots of power.

Great stuf CDB. I have a couple of thoughts to share on the subject.

1. Although we know something involving space takes place thanks to some of the shooting locations involving NASA I somehow doubt we will see Skrulls(at least in this movie) for the simple reason that many of the fight scenes have been shot and there have been no reports of monsterous type participants being involved. Although they could be CGI but I doubt it.

2. Since NASA locations have been used and we do know some sort of "space threat" is involved, maybe the involvement isn't an alien invasion at all ( at least in the first movie) but someone or something trying to warn us of a threat. There are three major instances of something like this happening in Avengers cannon and all three could involve a clash before somr sort of an understanding is reached.

Adam Warlock could be trying to reach this planets heroes to warn them about the coming of Thanos.

Ronin the Accuser could be scouting Earth for the Kree or checking in on the Kree refugees left here eons ago. (It has been hinted that the Inhumans may be appearing on screen at some point.)

We have all read by now that the Guardians of the Galaxy are in line for their own feature film, what better place to introduce them? Could they be misconstrued as hostile in their efforts to keep Korvac/Michael under survailance?

I see a number of excellent opportunities to naturally introduce characters for the next two films.

If you don't have the full roster of the Avenger's you limit what you can do on screen. In other words Ant-Man has to be part of this continuity, without Ant-Man there's no Ultron, no Vision and no Wasp. That kind of kills things, I'd like to assume that they'll hint at Dr. Pym in the Avengers maybe save him till the sequel but he has to be a part of this continuity.

Kang might not be seen coming, but he could have some plan, like, a change in the weather patterns, yadda, yadda. SHIELD must suspect something happening, but not know it would be Kang. He could still show up, but we all know he wont. What disapoints (forgot how to spell that) me is that Loki is actually the big threat, and they wasted it all on some lame god I already saw in a movie. Not saying I hate Loki, but, its just that they're wasting a good way to bring in Kang (wish they had him instead of Loki) or anyone else. Thanos is rumored, but, yeah, right, he would have been in a trailer. Its only Loki and its very, very cruddy IMO. I wanna see the movie, but its just that Loki was already in Thor. Either way, yeah, Loki will control Hulk I bet. Its going to be based off the first Avengers comic. All were missing is Wasp, Antman and Submariner. Black Widow and Nick Fury and War Machine and even SHIELD should be completely out to be based off the first comic.
