Warner Bros. Reportedly "Begged" JOKER Director Todd Phillips To Take Charge Of DC Studios

A few more details about the formation of DC Studios have been revealed, including the fact NBCUniversal's rumoured acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery could have a negative impact on the 8-10 year plan.

Big changes are being made to the DC brand, with Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav hiring James Gunn and Peter Safran to take charge of DC Studios and the new DCU.

There's a lot of excitement surrounding the 8-10 year plan they're putting together, though we know others were considered to take charge of the DCEU before them. Dan Lin passed on the opportunity, and a report from the New York Post suggests Joker director Todd Phillips was also among the contenders.

"The whole town turned the job down," an insider tells them, showing just how damaged the brand had become. "It was almost Todd Phillips. They begged him."

Gunn, who directed the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy for Marvel Studios along with The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker for Warner Bros., is no stranger to making comic book fans happy. However, some of his and Safran's early decisions have caused controversy, including Henry Cavill no longer being needed to play Superman in the DCU.

"Gunn has never run anything," one source tells the site. "I wonder if big filmmakers will work for another director with zero experience guiding movies through a huge grinder of a system. He’s not Kevin Feige [of Marvel]."

Another potential issue for DC Studios is the rumor that NBCUniversal is eyeing a purchase of Warner Bros. Discovery. While Zaslav has denied the company is for sale, this report states that "they are a cash-poor company being stripped to be sold."

Remember, Shazam! Fury of the Gods and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom were delayed until next year, at least partially because the studio didn't have enough money to market them!

There have previously been rumours about the DC brand being sold off, so perhaps Disney could step in, acquire the characters, and give Feige another comic book universe to take charge of? For now, we're definitely keen to see what Zaslav and Safran are able to come up with together.

If the DC movies were as good as Joker, then he gets my vote.

@marvel72 - lol at Todd Phillips' Superman.

@marvel72 - The problem is to have everything "super grounded". Fails everytime.

@marvel72 - No. It was a good movie. But it was a terrible Joker adaption and I could not see this turned into a superhero ensamble. I do NOT want another Dark Knight situation where filmmakers feverishly tried to make everything gritty and grounded, even if it doesn't make sense whatsoever. It sucked!
James Gunn is perfect. Atleast he doesn't shy away from embracing the comicbookiness.

@Fogs - Agreed, Superman should be a sci-fi epic, not dark and grounded. The only thing that should be grounded is the journalistic aspect which has been sorely lacking in every film adaptation.

The only thing I have to go for regarding Todd Philips is Joker and I personally would prefer to keep that style of movie separate from the rest of the DCU.

Btw I really like that movie, just don't think a cinematic universe should be in that style.

Man, WB really were swimming in their own piss....

I'm not saying Gunn is God, but this is why there's 2 guys in charge. Gunn for the creative direction, and Safran to deal more the business side of things. I think it's the best choice they could have made instead of trying to find some Feige replicant.

@UniqNo - Also asking a single director to take charge is the same shit that got them in this mess last time.

They gave Zack the reins more or less after the so so response of MoS, but felt that due to his take on Watchmen and 300 he was good enough. They really tried to do the same with Philips after Joker??
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 12/19/2022, 8:02 AM
@UniqNo - As good as Joker was, the Phillipsverse would have been way worse than the Snyderverse. He's far more pretentious and has zero respect for the comics or the fanbase.

Justice League would have basically been a Legion of Doom movie, where none of the villains have powers, based on Goodfellas.

@ObserverIO - Yeah, i mean Joker was a fine movie, but was nothing special in my mind. Only the last 20 minutes or so were worth watching.

I think if it didn't get another Joker Oscar win we probably won't be getting a sequel.

@UniqNo - there was a point when Feige wasn’t FEIGE yet.
Conquistador
Conquistador - 12/19/2022, 10:47 AM
@philinterrupted -Before Marvel Studios was the giant movie producing studio it was today Feige was still a producer on quite a few super hero movies/projects from Fox, Universal and Sony. so his credits speaks for itself. Philips has DIRECTED one movie about a villian also played pretty loose with the canon, more so than Synder did.

Also the guys resume is pretty hit and miss, more miss to me. Either way he rejected the job (thankfully)

@UniqNo - I’m in no way defending Philips as a choice. I think he’s an uninspired choice. When his name first came up it was because he had the latest successful DC movie.

Hypothetically if this were to occur, they would have to hire someone else. Feige can't be asked to shoulder two universes. The man needs his sanity!

@Vigor - Yeah, plus i'm sure he's looking at retirement after the saga's done. That's just a feeling i have. Not basing it on anything factual.

bkmeijer1 - 12/19/2022, 7:38 AM
@UniqNo @Vigor - I'm thinking Feige does wanna stick around for the Mutant Saga as well, but I can see him be done after.

And even right now, he already isn't working alone. Nate More and Louis D'Esposito (and others) have been at his side for a long time helping him run things.
Origame
Origame - 12/19/2022, 7:59 AM
@Vigor - also, let's not give disney control over the literal concept of a superhero (yes, legally superhero is owned by both dc and marvel).
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 12/19/2022, 8:10 AM
@Vigor - They could just fold DC into Marvel and have them be the main characters for a while. Much like DC folded other comics universes into their own such as Fawcett (Shazam), Charlton (Blue Beetle, The Question, etc.), Wildstorm (Grifter, WildCATS, etc.) and others. Even the formation of DC was an amalgamation of All American Comics and National Comics.

And Marvel has also folded other companies characters into their own universe before too.

It may seem like they don't belong to us, but Marvel has always had lesser versions of Batman and Superman, etc. It wouldn't take long for generations of fans to think of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and The Flash as anything other than Marvel.

Most of the GA can't distinguish them anyway. The are all from the comic book superhero world that began with Superman.

And Disney has long had a history of owning everything to do with themselves. Well, where would they be today if not for Superman?
ShimmyShimmyYA
ShimmyShimmyYA - 12/19/2022, 8:13 AM
@ObserverIO - they’d have to depower them , DC heroes are like god level powers compared to marvel even with the copycats marvel has they seldom show up and if they do they’re assistance or villains not the main hero
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 12/19/2022, 8:16 AM
@ShimmyShimmyYA - I mean sure, but on the one hand that's always been a problem for DC how their characters are so damn OP and on the other hand Marvel already have their own problematically OP characters like Captain Marvel, Scarlet Witch, Hulk, etc.
ShimmyShimmyYA
ShimmyShimmyYA - 12/19/2022, 8:33 AM
@ObserverIO - that’s true, it’s just odd ya know , DC heroes are like a kingdom, where each one has a territory they “rule” over and marvel heroes are like ehhhhh [frick] it were in NY lol
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 12/19/2022, 8:43 AM

@MosquitoFarmer - Better than the NYT, that's for sure. At least the Post doesn't pretend to be objective, and their Page Six and sports sections rock. Cover headlines always offer a good morning chuckle, which NYT cannot do with a bunch of Columbia grads on the staff. 🤣

@bobevanz - Joker is a great movie but barely a CBM while Batman works well for Batman, it wouldn't translate well for most other characters out there. CBM is not a specific genre, it does not need to fall into a specific style to be good in my opinion.

"DC Studios was actually right to fire Superman Henry Cavill" is the title to this article from the Post. This quote is from one source, so probably a youtuber heard a rumor and the Post ran with it. IDK cause there is no real info presented. I liked it when papers used to never publish rumors or gossip and only wrote about stuff like this if they had 3 independent sources claiming it and not just one random unknown person.
