Barbie has bested the Bat!

As Greta Gerwig's colourful comedy continues to dominate the box office, the critically-acclaimed blockbuster has officially become Warner Bros.' highest-grossing movie of all time domestically (adjusted for inflation).

Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight has managed to hold this spot for a very long time, but after taking in $6.1 million on Tuesday for a domestic total of $537.4 million, the Margot Robbie-starrer shot passed the DC Comics sequel, which finished its theatrical run at $536 million back in 2008.

This is just the latest box office milestone for the iconic fashion doll's big-screen debut, which has also reached the $1.2 billion mark worldwide to become the second-biggest WB release in history behind the final Harry Potter film.

Among other records shattered: Gerwig now ranks as the highest-grossing female director of all time domestically — solo or otherwise — after passing Frozen II, and the highest-grossing female director of a live-action movie at the worldwide box office after topping Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel.

Barbie is expected to face some competition from DC's Blue Beetle this weekend, although we can't see it slipping down the BO charts too much just yet.

From Oscar-nominated writer/director Greta Gerwig (Little Women, Lady Bird) comes Barbie, which also stars America Ferrera (End of Watch, the How to Train Your Dragon films), Kate McKinnon (Bombshell, Yesterday), Issa Rae (The Photograph, Insecure), Rhea Perlman (I’ll See You in My Dreams, Matilda), and Will Ferrell (the Anchorman films, Talladega Nights), and more.

Gerwig directs from a screenplay she penned alongside Oscar nominee Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story, The Squid and the Whale), based on the iconic fashion dolls by Mattel.

The film’s producers are Oscar nominee David Heyman (Marriage Story, Gravity), Robbie, Tom Ackerley and Robbie Brenner, with Gerwig, Baumbach, Ynon Kreiz, Richard Dickson, Michael Sharp, Josey McNamara, Courtenay Valenti, Toby Emmerich and Cate Adams serving as executive producers.

@PlusUltra - Just look at Disney for that. Might be the 1st year they don't have a billion dollar film. No 1 gives a shit about a black lil mermaid, a feminist indiana jones, and the marvels seems to be DOA. Time will tell I guess.

@PlusUltra - How many WOKE MOVIES have failed? This one fluke of a movie doesn't change GO WOKE GO BROKE.

@PlusUltra - It's been reclaimed by the alt-right anti-woke crowd as a Sigma Male movie because of how caring it is of the Kens and because it stars a white blonde beautiful by their standards woman - staying true to the iconic look of the character and respecting its target audience and fans... unlike the woke race-bending in Disney movies.

Same thing happened with Mario, though at least you didn't see the alt-right reaching and struggling to figure out what their narrative for the movie was gonna be.

@mastakilla39 - Margot Robbie is hot AF and has incredible screen presence. Men love her, women want to be like her. Only ScarJo is a bigger box office draw and with "Barbie", Robbie probably now is the #1 female Hollywood actress. In short, "Barbie" was going to do massively well because of Robbie. Marvels is going to tank because of the widely-disliked Larson, and her two co-stars have zero screen presence.

@mastakilla39 - It's funny you "forgot" to mention Shazam, Black Adam and The Flash, 3 blockbusters that aren't "woke" but are still box office bombs and made way less money than The little mermaid, proving your theory is wrong.

I don't know. Ask Anheuser-Busch, Target, and Disney for their 2023 perspectives.

@PlusUltra - Barbie wasn't any more woke than it's always been. Rage bait YouTubers just play fast and loose with the term these days.
FireandBlood
FireandBlood - 8/16/2023, 3:41 PM
@SheepishOne - Most of this shit isn’t, and the movies that are fly completely over most these idiots heads, like The Batman.

We live on a planet full of diversity. Making a conscious effort to reflect that within Hollywood isn’t woke. It’s just not being exclusive to a particular group like Hollywood has been for the vast majority its history.

@CoHost - You know, I've thought ever since I saw it (especially coming off of Batman Begins) that Chris Nolan was a closeted Hollywood conservative. Lots of right wing themes, especially in the third act with the exploration of authoritarianism and the dismantling of civil liberties to create a surveillance state.

And don't even get me started on Rises.

Loved the whole trilogy, but I don't think Nolan was being subtle at all with it. Of course, Batman as a concept kind of lends itself to more right wing politics than left, just by the nature of the lore.
mastakilla39
mastakilla39 - 8/16/2023, 3:48 PM
@BuzzKillington - I did did you? Can't even call the movie an indiana jones movie when its more about his god daughter. its similar to No Time to Die where its a de-masculated version of an old action hero because it was written by the same feminist writer. No 1 saw the movie for that reason because you destroyed what indiana jones stood for.

@someimurda - never said go woke, go broke is the only thing killing cinemas. But its def killing disney. lil mermaid is in the same boat as black adam, shazam, and the flash they are huge box office failures and disappointment. lil mermaid failed every market but the USA.
SheepishOne
SheepishOne - 8/16/2023, 3:51 PM
@PlusUltra - Lol I completely agree that The Batman was more "woke" than Barbie. Just listen to any of Catwoman's monologues. Not to mention Riddler is basically a certain subsect of 4chan personified.

And that's not a bad thing. It just is.
CoHost
CoHost - 8/16/2023, 3:57 PM
@PlusUltra - Not from your comment. It seems there's a sector of some who specifically didn't want to see Barbie beat The Dark Knight.
URCOMMENTSUCKS
URCOMMENTSUCKS - 8/16/2023, 3:57 PM
@SheepishOne - Nolan has said multiple times: he doesn't make the politics of his movies obvious. He thinks it cheapens the movie if the director makes the audience think what the director wants to think instead of them seeing different things in movies. Such as you, who saw supposed right-wing politics. That's on you, not Nolan. But no, pal, Nolan isn't conservative, let alone right-wing. He's attended women's marches couple of years ago with his wife, and his recent comments about Putin clearly show that he's not one of them ''Stop arming the Ukraine, where did my taxes go, this is a proxy war'' bullshit that became such a common talking point among MAGA hats.

@mastakilla39 -

I did.

No, it was about Indiana Jones and Helena was just another supporting character like Marion and Willie.

You guys really live in a fantasy world if a man getting any kind of help is considered emasculation.

Also what does Indiana Jones stand for? I'm interested on what weird take this will be.

SheepishOne
SheepishOne - 8/16/2023, 5:36 PM
@URCOMMENTSUCKS - I'm not saying the guy is MAGA. And maybe he's not even a right winger. But that doesn't mean he didn't use a right wing political lens to tell a story from a certain perspective.

The political themes in his Batman trilogy just seem too obvious to not consider. And maybe using Batman to do so is his way of criticizing those views. That's not my takeaway, but the inherent ridiculousness of Batman as a concept wouldn't be a bad medium to explore that kind of criticism.

Also, you can attend women's matches, hate Putin, and all that and still agree with certain right wing ideals. Or not even agree with them and use them to tell a story.

@GeneralZod - This revisionist nonsense.

Most of Margot Robbie's blockbusters have underachieved or flat out tanked at the box office.

No, Barbie wasn't always going to do "massively well" because of her and it damn sure wasn't predicted around here. Credit where its due; no rewriting history.
Batmangina
Batmangina - 8/16/2023, 6:15 PM
@PlusUltra - Go Woke Go Broke is still the order of the day. Ask Bud Light and the entire Disney Production Staff and slate of releases.

Barbie had a viral marketing campaign that has 60+ years of GIRLS PLAYING WITH DOLLS behind it.

Generational awareness among women and girls that wouldn't know a woke topic if it gave them a titty twister on their nipple free bosoms.

The actual content of the movie has little or nothing to do with it.

Just like Captain Marvel being positioned in between Avengers movies - does anyone think Bree Larson = Billion Dollar box office? Do you?
