Many were surprised when Warner Brothers delayed the still-untitled Batman Vs. Superman movie by 10 months, pushing the Zack Snyder-directed Man of Steel follow-up into 2016 and on the same day that Disney/Marvel has an untitled production slated. Talking with Slash Film among others during the Captain America: The Winter Soldier press junket today, Marvel Studios president of production Kevin Feige assured that the company has no plans to abandon the May 6, 2016 date.
“We’re certainly keeping the date there and we’ll announce what that movie is, I assume, in the next few months,” declared Kevin Feige. Asked if San Diego Comic-Con is where and when the magic will happen and we learn titles of the remaining Phase Three movies, the producer said: “That would be great, I’d love nothing more than to be able to announce them all there. But if it’s ready beforehand, we’ll probably do it beforehand. If it’s not ready then, we’ll do it after.”
UPDATE: In a separate interview with IGN, Feige reiterated what he stated above: “We're still on that date and we're going to be announcing soon what the movie will be on that date. That's what we're sort of actively working on as we get ready to firm up and get into pre-production what will be the two films for '16 and the two films for '17.” Though it's no huge surprise, it's interesting that Feige mentioned a second 2017 film considering there's only one--on May 5, 2017--that Disney/Marvel have dated that year. Anyhow, the producer also reiterated that we could get announcements before Comic-Con. “It's not about the best time to make an announcement for us,” he said. “It's about when the team coalesces and when we find a group of collaborators that we want to spend the next two or three years with to bring one of the movies to life.”
From Doctor Strange to Guardians of the Galaxy 2, there have been a handful of Marvel Studios properties rumored to nab the May 6, 2016 date and follow Ant-Man on the Phase Three slate. However, it seems the recently much-talked about Captain America 3 could be going up against Batman and Superman. According to New York Post writer Reed Tucker, Winter Soldier directors Anthony & Joe Russo suggested today that the third installment is “slated to begin shooting in 2015” and it would “pick up where story left off in Captain America 2.” What do you think?
