BLACK PANTHER II Could Lose Cinematographer Rachel Morrison Over Scheduling Issues

There's some bad news for Ryan Coogler's Black Panther II, as cinematographer Rachel Morrison has confirmed that she may be unable to return for the sequel after serving as DP on the first instalment...

Black Panther tackled a lot of very important subjects, and earned a well-deserved "Best Picture" nod at the Academy Awards. Visually, the movie was perhaps the most beautiful we've seen from Marvel Studios, and much of the credit for that should go to cinematographer Rachel Morrison.

She worked with director Ryan Coogler on Fruitvale Station and was later enlisted for Black Panther, but it seems scheduling conflicts could pose a problem for her returning for Black Panther II.

Talking to The Playlist, Morrison explained that the production start date on her directorial debut, Flint Strong, is likely to clash with the Marvel Studios sequel. "I was supposed to deliver my movie and then a few months later hop on to ‘Black Panther 2. Now, there might be some issue of those overlapping."

"Ryan and I talk regularly," the filmmaker continued. "He called me up cause he had a dream a few ago that he was three weeks into production and this male DP comes out holding a camera and he’s like, ‘That’s not my DP. Where the [frick] is Rachel?’"

"If we had gone back in September, I think we could make it, but now it’s a bit of a moment of truth for everyone to realize if my movie is definitely going back in January that I probably won’t be able to do ‘Panther,’ which is devastating to me," Morrison continued. "If we can’t go back in January and we get pushed into fall of next year, maybe I can do ‘Panther.’"

This gives us an idea of when work is set to start on Black Panther II, but no one could blame the cinematographer for wanting to prioritise a movie she's going to direct over a return to the MCU.

As always, we'll keep you guys updated.

They could get Maryse Alberti, Coogler’s DP for Creed. She shot The Wrestler too, which was exceptional work.

@tmp3 - yea in an interview Morrison was super upset about kissing Creed due to pregnancy but was holy Ryan fit Alberti. Creed was beautifully shot and she would be a nice get for BP 2 if Morrison is unavailable

Black Panther, as exceptional of a film it was (minus the end CGI fight), switching cinematography would probably feel like a course correction moving forward. Minus the end shot with Killmonger and BP looking into the sunset, the film should’ve seemed more beautiful and majestic looking back.

@Se4M4NSt4ine - I agree to an extent. But I think a lot of how it turned out is because of Marvel's typical restrictions. I also think a lot of Morrison's stuff got reshot for some reason. Like the final battle sequence especially. A lot of the shots of those scenes look way better in the trailers than in the film.

This was one of my favourite shots from the trailers and it was reshot too.

@Se4M4NSt4ine - My issue wasn’t with the framing it was how... flat so much of it looked? I wouldn’t put that too much on her though, considering all the digital landscapes must have had a big impact on how they could light scenes.

@tmp3 - Yea, I think it's a bit weird how it's Black Panther that ended up having these weird CGI moments despite having Coogler at the helm. Fruitvale Station and Creed are both very good looking, very raw films in how they feel. I thought Black Panther looked good and so did Wakanda but that doesn't compare to the atmosphere in Creed for instance.

I'm hoping we can see some of that in the sequel.

@tmp3 - yeah you’re probably right with that one!

@Necropolitan - yeah for sure the reshoots definitely felt like a rushed process that didn’t quite work with the rushed CGI scenes either.

I hope she's able to still do it, but gotta respect her branching out into directing. I personally liked what she was able to do with Black Panther. Coogler and her are good friends and she wanted to do Creed as well. They could definitely use Alberti from Creed if it doesn't work out.

I found BP to be one of the best shot MCU films

I think Rachel Morrison unfortunately is the least of BPII problems right know.

@Imfunnyhow - didn’t he lose weight for a movie? Pulling a Bale or something

@BlackBeltJones - Doing that kind of transformation its bad for health still. 🤷🏽‍♂️

@Imfunnyhow - Where did you get the last pic from? That don’t even look like him. Skin tone is off.

@Imfunnyhow - That was physical transformation for a role, a la Bale. I think it was for Da 5 Bloods, but I could be mistaken.

As unhealthy as it is, he can be back in shape in no time, much like Bale.

She is super talented and one of the best working right now. Hope she returns.

One of my favorite shots from BP

That would definitely be a loss. Coogler's definitely got a passion for elevating women so I'm sure he would find another female DP, but Morrison has some stellar shots in BP that I'd love to see her build upon

Hopping for less CG and more practical stunts

IMO one of the most fake-looking MCU movies. Killmonger & the whole cast kinda carried the film for me.
Franshu
Franshu - 8/8/2020, 5:07 PM
It's a pity much of her cinematography (which I suspect was very good, based on other flicks she was the DP for) got muddled by the rushed CGI additions or modifications. I wish she could stay for BP II and have a shot at corrctingthose issues and improving on the look of the film

As if this would make a difference all the MCU movies visually looked the same and Black Panther was a seriously overrated typical Marvel film.
