BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER - It Seems Other Characters WERE Considered For The BP Mantle

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever sees a new hero step up to become Wakanda's protector, but director Ryan Coogler and producer Nate Moore have now confirmed that other characters were considered...

Warning: If you haven't seen Black Panther: Wakanda Forever yet, major spoilers follow from this point on.

Although the rumor mill did churn out a few other names early on, it soon became clear that T'Challa's little sister, Shuri (Letitia Wright), was going to be the one to take up the mantle of Black Panther in the wake of Chadwick Boseman's passing.

We had previously been led to believe that the young scientist was always Marvel Studios and director Ryan Coogler's first choice, but it seems other options were considered.

While chatting to Marvel.com, Wakanda Forever producer Nate Moore revealed that the "possibility of passing the mantle to one of the many other characters in the Black Panther world" was discussed - though Shuri always seemed like the most logical pick.

“[Shuri] just felt like the most organic storytelling choice,” he explains. “We had a performer that we knew could carry that if she agreed to do it. We didn't really explore other options that thoroughly because this just felt like the right thing to do. Letitia wanted and wants to do right by this franchise.”

“It’s hard to say it was obvious because Chad’s passing was so unexpected," adds Coogler. "But it was a choice that made a lot of sense. As we realized what the [theme] was and when you talk about T’Challa passing, who would be the most affected by that? It became clear that Shuri should be the nexus of our movie.”

Shuri is expected to remain The MCU's Black Panther for the foreseeable, but the sequel's mid-credits scene does lay the groundwork for someone else to take over a few years down the line (more here).

In Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett), Shuri (Letitia Wright), M’Baku (Winston Duke), Okoye (Danai Gurira), and the Dora Milaje (including Florence Kasumba), fight to protect their nation from intervening world powers in the wake of King T’Challa’s death. As the Wakandans strive to embrace their next chapter, the heroes must band together with the help of War Dog Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) and Everett Ross (Martin Freeman) and forge a new path for the kingdom of Wakanda. Introducing Tenoch Huerta as Namor, king of a hidden undersea nation, the film also stars Dominique Thorne, Michaela Coel, Mabel Cadena, and Alex Livanalli.

@ShimmyShimmyYA - Shuri will be Black panther as long as the actor want to be black panther. It can be two Black panthers, she was great in the film

@McMurdo - I would assume that’s the plan, I don’t think we’re getting another BP before the avengers movies drop soo acting could happen

Would’ve love to have seen Okoye take it but narrative wise Shuri has the leg up.

M’Bkau in a Panther suit would be a tank!

@GhostDog - Glory to Hannuman! Why be a Black Panther when he could be the White Gorilla of the Jabari? Let's goooooo!

@TheRose - true.

@TheRose - My exact thoughts. That's something I wanna see in the future of MCU.

@GhostDog - Wish they had kept him a villain, considering Black Panther's other two archenemies were dead.......Also, he's vegetarian, but he wears gorilla pelts?

I know it's 4 years after the fact, but seems like they needlessly made the character contradictory for a quick joke.

@soberchimera - Actually, I think the whole vegeterian thing is part of idolizing gorillas in Jabari culture, since gorillas are the most notorious and strick vegeterians out of all primate species. And despite the diet, they are not above being aggressive and killing.

soberchimera - 11/15/2022, 3:31 PM
@Odin - Why would you kill and skin the animal you idolize then? That's like people in India wearing leather jackets when they consider cows sacred.

@GhostDog - ability wise, totally. But I don't know if Okoye would want the mantle.

Steel86 - 11/15/2022, 3:41 PM
@soberchimera - Thats a good point but there are many tribes that idolize animals and wear them. In most cases in a warrior tribe it would be a right of passage and they would only wear the animal after a ritual hunt.

@Steel86 - But specifically, the Jabari do consume the flesh of the gorillas they kill:

The dominant Black Panther Cult outlawed the rival White Gorilla Cult's worship in Wakanda. M'Baku (Man-Ape) of the Jabari tribe is one of Wakanda's greatest warriors, second only to T'Challa, the Black Panther himself. While T'Challa, king of Wakanda, is on a several month leave of absence from Wakanda, the ambitious M'Baku plots to usurp the throne. M'Baku flouts T'Challa's edicts and revives the White Gorilla Cult, killing one of the rare white gorillas living in the jungles near Wakanda. M'Baku bathes in the gorilla's blood and eats its flesh which "mystically" confers the gorilla's great strength upon M'Baku. ~Avengers #62

@GhostDog - Okoye is definitely their best warrior but I agree, the narrative strength is with Shuri. She's the one who feels his lost the most, along with you-know-who-else.

EgoEgor - 11/15/2022, 4:32 PM
@soberchimera - "he wears gorilla pelts?" Probably because they live in the mountains and need the pelts for warmth. Also might wear gorilla suit as means of worship, just because they worship the gorilla god, doesn't mean they don't kill gorillas. People conduct their worship in different ways.
soberchimera
soberchimera - 11/15/2022, 4:50 PM
@EgoEgor - I would say they wear them for both those reasons, doesn't take away the fact that they kill them, and in the comics consume their flesh as a means to attain their strength. It's just inane that they would be vegetarians when basically every culture that kills and wears animal skins also eats them because it would be wasteful not to, look at the Native Americans and buffalo, they used them for meat, clothing, tools, and sinew.
EgoEgor
EgoEgor - 11/15/2022, 4:54 PM
@soberchimera - Not the first religious group that would be hypocritical, probably all of them. That's all it really is. Clearly they do it for reasons beyond the need to consume flesh. Probably believe the pelts grant them power or connection to Hanuman, some shit like that.

That's literally the point I made in my initial comment.

EgoEgor - 11/15/2022, 5:10 PM
@soberchimera - They can be vegetarian and be gorilla murderers, not really mutually exclusive, though. But point taken.

M'Baku filling in as the Black Panther and acting as an uncle and advisor to young T'Challa would have been MUCH better.
