BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER Director Reveals MCU Status Of Daniel Kaluuya's W'Kabi In Sequel

We recently learned that Daniel Kaluuya will not reprise the role of W'Kabi in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The actor put it down to scheduling issues caused by his starring in Jordan Peele's Nope, saying it was "what’s best for the story [and] what’s best for the film."

T'Challa's best friend and Okoye's husband (that was confirmed by a deleted scene), W'Kabi betrayed Wakanda when he decided to ally himself with the invading Erik Killmonger.

While he ultimately surrendered, the warrior's final fate was left unclear, but will the sequel address it in any way? Only briefly by the sound of it, but director Ryan Coogler shared some details during an interview with Cinema Blend, confirming W'Kabi's current MCU status.

"Yeah, he’s basically banished, but still in Wakanda’s borders," the filmmaker said. "Yeah, does that make sense? So, there’s one line that refers to him still being alive."

Okoye actress Danai Gurira was also asked what thought she gave to W'Kabi, noting that, "I can’t go into too many details. You would have to ask my director about that whole thing. But we definitely did [discuss it]. There was stuff that we didn’t end up doing but we definitely did."

Whether there's more story to tell with W'Kabi is hard to say, and it's easy enough to understand why bringing him back wasn't necessarily a huge priority for the Black Panther sequel. However, if that rumoured Okoye TV series on Disney+ becomes a reality, then there's a very good chance we'll see the Dora Milaje leader deal with the fallout of what her husband did.

Marvel Studios has introduced a lot of new characters in Phase 4, so we hope there will be time to pick up with more familiar faces from the past down the line. For now, though, it looks like W'Kabi has been sidelined.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever arrives in theaters on November 11.

It will be like Sif.

Three 3 movies later just act like he wasn't gone and Explain nothing.

@Lokiwasright - he literally just said there’s a line that references what happened to him. With Sif, we didn’t even get a line in Ragnarok about her status. That would’ve been appreciated enough at that point. Kevin Feige had to tell you what happened to her.

Given he still fought alongside Killmonger when T'Challa proved to still be alive, and therefore fought against Wakanda, it makes sense.

@MosquitoFarmer - ...it makes sense to not arrest him and let him wander around wakanda unchecked?

@Origame - Who says he’s unchecked?

@MosquitoFarmer - ...why would they if they aren't going to arrest him? You're acting like he committed a small felony when he actively worked against the leader of the country. Yet no arrest and no ban from the country. At that point, why bother keeping tabs on him?

@Origame - Why don’t you ask the screenwriters, if you’re gonna get worked up over something that hasn’t even been properly addressed yet, never mind the sequel not even being released yet?…

@MosquitoFarmer - dude, it's basic common sense. When there's a traitor to your government, you either throw them in jail or banish them.

@Origame - What part of "he's basically banished" did you not read?
Origame

@MosquitoFarmer - "but still in wakanda's borders". And you accuse me of not reading?
MosquitoFarmer

@Origame - And Wakanda extends vastly beyond just the city. He could be off in the mountains. Better they keep tabs on him then exile him to the rest of the world where he's never been only to return as the next Killmonger.
Origame

@MosquitoFarmer - how will he become the next killmonger if he doesn't have the means by blood and is exiled from the counrty? Most likely he could be the next klaw or just a general terrorist. And either option just says they shouldn't have bothered letting him go and just thrown his a$$ in prison. This not really banishment simply doesn't make sense.

I really hope that they just recast him into a different down the line. He’s such a phenomenal actor and when he starred in BP, he wasn’t as big of a movie star as he is now. I hope instead of returning as his BP character he’s recast as another marvel character.
