BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER Director Ryan Coogler On The Possibility Of Helming A Third Movie

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever certainly left the door open for the story to continue, but does director Ryan Coogler have any interest in returning to helm a third film?

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever served as a fitting tribute to T'Challa and the late Chadwick Boseman while establishing Shuri as the new Panther and introducing an entire aquatic civilization. The mid-credits scene also featured the debut of T'Challa's son, who will almost certainly take over as Wakanda's King and protector someday.

So, it's fair to say the movie set-up quite a few things that could potentially be explored in future sequels, but does director Ryan Coogler have any interest in returning to continue the story?

During an interview with the New York Times, Coogler admitted that he'd be happy to stay on this franchise for "as long as folks will have me."

"I feel blessed that I have the opportunity to work on these movies, bro. When I got asked to do the first one, it was like a moving train. I thank God every day that I was able to jump on it and meet these people, these actors, and to meet Chadwick during some of the last years of his life. I’ll do it as long as folks will have me. But I think it’s bigger than just me or Joe. Between the first and second movie, we made $2 billion at the box office, which is what matters the most to corporations. So I hope that it continues, man. I hope people are still making movies about Wakanda long after we’re gone."

Marvel Studios has yet to announce a threequel, but given Wakanda Forever's box office success (it recently passed $800 million worldwide) and critical response, you have to believe it'll only be a matter of time.

There's a lot of ground to cover in the MCU as we build towards Avengers: The Kang Dynasty - which will likely be the next time we see Letitia Wright's Panther - though, so we're not anticipating an official announcement anytime soon.

I was one that thought he should have been recast for the 2nd film. People die all the time. Life Goes on.

@blitzkreg - Recast Coogler?

@blitzkreg - maybe he will be, and this is how they are recasting him.. by killing off the Boseman T’Challa, and using the multiverse for another T’Challa to come in. Just because they didn’t do it in the sequel doesn’t mean it won’t happen.

@blitzkreg - I said the same thing but I was called a racist among other names, but that’s common for this site.

@MarioT1000 - We've already got another T'Challa without the Multiverse. And they did do it in this sequel.

He should return for the 3rd film. He built Wakanda and Talokan and wrote the arcs for each of the characters. He knows them best. So yes he should stay.

Coogler is great, so I'd be down for it. Most of my issues with Wakanda Forever stem from last-minute rewrites and such after Boseman's death and trying to expand on characters that had a smaller screen presence (if any at all) in the original script. I know Coogler had a much different story in mind than what we got, but the direction was solid.

@SheepishOne - the dude died like 2 years ago.......I'd hardly call that last minute re-writes. If you can't come in with a better story and better writing with 2 years of preparation then you're a talentless hack.

Half the people on thos site could have produced a better script than the pile of dogshit they came in with

@Toblakai - Last-minute as in, the film was already in pre-production with a completed script and a release date when Boseman died.

There was a lot of line-toeing being done as to writing a story that both honored Boseman's legacy while also moving the greater story forward. It's easy to be critical in retrospect, but Coogler was in an incredibly tough position as a writer/director.

I'm not saying I loved the story they told, but I can appreciate the difficulties in writing it. There was a lot more on the line than your typical MCU outing.

Anyway, regardless of the writing, I think Coogler has an eye for film and is one of the more visually interesting directors the MCU has used. So I'd like to see him return for a third, even if he doesn't write it.

Whatever your feelings are on "Wakanda Forever", you have to give credit to Coogler for navigating through what was almost an impossible task. He could have walked away from the project and no one would have faulted him. Instead, he pushed forward and the result was yet another impressive film on his incredible resume. The guy is quickly becoming one of the greatest directors of our time. If you ask me, it's Marvel privlege to have him aboard.

@Skestra - impossible task lol. You clowns are acting like it was Brando dying half way through filming and not a decent actor dying 2 YEARS before the mivie was made. Give the Trumpian levels of hyperbole a goddamn rest.
