BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER Looks Set To Claw Its Way To A Solid $66 Million Second Weekend

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is well on track to becoming one of the year's biggest movies, though a $66 million second weekend in North America is a tad lower than initially expected. Check it out!

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever looks set to end its second weekend in theaters with a slightly lower-than-expected $66 million. That's a 64% drop, and a dip from early $70 million projections.

Of course, it's worth noting that the sequel had a huge $181 million opening weekend, a figure that was quite a bit higher than $170 million estimates. Deadline also points out that the movie's lengthy runtime is also contributing to this dip as it can't play in as many screens due to it clocking in at over 2 hours and 40 minutes.

There's good news for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, though, as Thanksgiving week being on the horizon means that, if people aren't watching it this weekend, they will be in the coming days. Plus, the movie is only 2% behind what Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness had earned this far into its release, so Marvel Studios has a big hit on its hands here.

As of now, the Black Panther follow-up has earned a total of $286.7 million in North America, and while we're waiting on updated international numbers, it's already cracked $400 million globally.

We recently learned that the movie won't be released on Disney+ after the usual 45-day window, so this is definitely a title Marvel Studios is hoping will have legs at the box office.

We also can't help but point out that Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has demolished Black Adam, a movie many thought might slow its momentum. After five weeks in theaters, that's made only $156.6 million, a strong indication the MCU remains at the top of the hierarchy of power in Hollywood.

"Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ranks among Marvel Studios' best movies, and is an emotional, uplifting, tour de force of a blockbuster," we said in our review of the sequel. "Letitia Wright delivers a powerhouse performance, while Angela Bassett’s majestic work will leave you reeling."

With Thanksgiving next week and no competition til Avatar (to which this could be solid counterprogramming) I'm thinking this does mid to high $400ms ($450-480m) domestically and around $400m overseas. A dip from the breakout first film was always gonna happen and this is a sequel that is missing its lead character; solid when taking that in account - it's not a steeper drop than The Last Jedi from The Force Awakens (and that had no reason dropping as much as it did other than mixed wom). This does indicate though that there's been a plague in ticket sales and a portion of the audience that's only willing to show up for massive events like No Way Home and Maverick.

Don't quite see anything else in the MCU outgrossing this domestically until Phase 6 comes along. The Black Panther lives.

But I was told it underperformed...

@DrReedRichards - and my bad, I said 60 cents per ticket, but I meant 60 cents on the dollar of every ticket.

@DrReedRichards - - I don't think it's that it underperformed. But the budget is pretty high. They need to make about $850 million to break even. Budget is $250 million. Double that for marketing and you get $500 million. They earn about 60 cents on the dollar per ticket. So they need about $850 million in sales to break even. (The numbers reported are full ticket sales, but the sales are split between Disney and the theatre, with Marvel/Disney earning 60 cents per ticket sale)

$850 million X .60 = 510 million. So basically, even if it does earn a total of $850-900 million, it will still not be a massive take for Marvel/Disney. 850 will only break even. This is why it's being reported that Disney needs this movie to make 1 billion.

So yeah, a lot of people are seeing this movie. That can't denied. But financially it looks like it COULD fall short of a profit, or if it does earn a profit, it won't be anything to brag about.

@DrReedRichards - No China is really going to hurt the film. I don't think Marvel could have predicted that before they came up with a budget for this film years ago. It's a shame because it feels like a lot of people liked this movie. It doesn't feel as divisive as a lot of other phase 4 projects have been. But it's budget is really hurting it.

@CorndogBurglar -

Realistically speaking, I don't see this breaking a billie. My predictio had been 875-925 mil, or 725-775 w/o China. But even by those numbers, that's hardly seen as having underperformed. Nothing to brag about, sure. But a profit, absolutely.

64% is still a huge drop and this is another Marvel movie that's going to get it's ass kicked by Top Gun.
