BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER Passes $400 Million At The Domestic Box Office

The latest box office updates place Marvel Studios' Black Panther: Wakanda Forever just past the $400 million mark, but with Avatar: The Way of Water looming, that might be about it for the Phase 4 sequel.

By MarkCassidy - Dec 10, 2022 11:12 AM EST

After claiming the #1 spot for five weeks in a row, Ryan Coogler's Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has officially passed the $400 million mark at the domestic box office.

According to Deadline, Marvel Studios' final Phase 4 theatrical release took in about $11 million over the past couple of days for a running cume of $401.55M. Its global total is approaching $750M.

Can it possibly hope to match its predecessor's mighty $1 billion+ haul? At this stage it seems highly unlikely, especially with James Cameron's Avatar: The Way of Water expected to dominate the box office when it releases next week. $825M - $850M seems like a far more realistic outcome - which is certainly nothing to scoff at.

In Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett), Shuri (Letitia Wright), M’Baku (Winston Duke), Okoye (Danai Gurira), and the Dora Milaje (including Florence Kasumba), fight to protect their nation from intervening world powers in the wake of King T’Challa’s death. As the Wakandans strive to embrace their next chapter, the heroes must band together with the help of War Dog Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) and Everett Ross (Martin Freeman) and forge a new path for the kingdom of Wakanda. Introducing Tenoch Huerta as Namor, king of a hidden undersea nation, the film also stars Dominique Thorne, Michaela Coel, Mabel Cadena, and Alex Livanalli.

@lvcl - 800m is still very successful. Are we discrediting Marvel because of Marvel?

You do not compare a Hattori Hanzo sword to a Hattori Hanzo sword. You compare it to every other sword ever made.

It's called self-criticism instead of discrediting.

The trend is downwards.

Do you think it would be reasonable for Black Panther 3 to get 400 Worldwide?

If Disney doesn't make any changes, that will be the result.

@lvcl - 1st times always the charm, not really a disappointment if the sequels do worst. As long as they aren't losing money and people show up thats all they really care about. The max potential of this franchise kinda died with CB.

Avengers 2 and Civil War did worst than Avengers 1 at the box office too, doesn't mean there's any major problems or radical changes that needed to be made.

What you say makes no sense.

Avengers endgame and infinity war far exceed their predecessors.

Your mentality that the sequels must be inferior is from the dark ages.

If they are not going to make a better movie than the previous one, it is better that they do nothing

It's in the same ballpark as Thor L&T which is concerning as Black Panther: WF had the same or potentially higher budget given the delays caused by the main actress.

I also think you are not factoring in that Avatar 2 is releasing soon and will dominate the box office. Especially given it's starting to flatten out on the box office comparison tracking, the interest has faded to the point it's daily domestics are now starting to be lower than Thor L&T's.

While it may stay in cinema's longer, the audience has been conditioned to expect it on Disney+ after four weeks or so and we are seeing that drop-off related to that.

"It's 5% ahead of multiverse of madness"

Yet will end its box office run at $790-$830m compared to MoM's $955m or so?

The days of most comic book movies making 1 billion over

I remember the day when Captain Marvel and Aquaman 2 mediocre movies
made over 1 billion

I am not convinced that Avatar: The Way of Water will obliterate a Marvel film. Sure it will easily win the weekend, but I think Wakanda will still have an audience.

@Forthas - Yeah, I'm very curious to see how this plays out. The first Avatar made its money because the stars aligned for it. These next films just don't have the same factors propelling it. But who knows...let's wait and see.

The reviews are calling it must see on the big screen and better than the first. Also James Cameron is the sequel god . Also James Cameron has two of the biggest films ever.

The guy doesn't miss💁

1) The film is three hours long
2) CGI is not as mesmerizing as it used to be.
3) There are way too many other enetrtainment options given the growth of streaming which will compete with any repeat viewings.

Like you stated...we will see!

If I win you have to say TDK isn't that great and Batman and Robin has more rewatch value. You also have to say Nolan will never come back to Batman and George Clooney is the best Batman of all time.

You will have to say Zack Snyder is the greatest director that ever lived, Warner Brothers is the best studio and makes Marvel look like dumb stupid amateurs, and Henry Cavill is the greatest Superman of ALL TIME!

@AmazingFILMporg - That's why this is so curious to me. You're not wrong. But I'm just not quite seeing it yet.

I'm not rooting either way, btw. I'm indifferent to this franchise. I'm just really fascinated to see what this does.

@AmazingFILMporg - I agree. Avatar II is going to be massive and outperform Top Gun II's numbers. First year since I-don't-know-when that we have not one but three non-CBMs that will outperform the closest CBM (Strange 2) in box office gross.
