Black Panther: Wakanda Forever's screenplay was already written when Chadwick Boseman passed away, and when Marvel Studios chose to move forward with the sequel without recasting T'Challa, big changes were made. Ryan Coogler and Joe Robert Cole teamed up to take on that Herculean task, though now we've seen the movie, it's fair to say they nailed it.

Talking to Rolling Stone, Cole opened up on the process of finding a new Black Panther for the MCU and started by confirming Winston Duke's M'Baku was considered at one point.

"We would kick around the ideas, and try to extrapolate where the story goes and what’s the most impactful choice - what’s the best journey? And where do you go after the film in terms of those characters. M’Baku certainly was someone that got kicked around a little bit."

"[In] the comics, Shuri is Black Panther and there’s a natural organicness, I guess is the best way to say it, to her becoming Panther," he continues. "But you kick the tires on all sorts of ideas. And you just want to make the best decision and do what’s best for the story."

When the site suggested Lupita Nyong'o's Nakia would have also been an exciting possibility, Cole responded, "That got kicked around! Her name got kicked around for sure."

Either character would have been a worthy successor to Boseman's T'Challa, though it's easy to see why Letitia Wright's Shuri emerged as the frontrunner. As well as lining up with the source material, the emotional journey this sequel takes her on culminating with the hero becoming Black Panther is arguably the most satisfying payoff.

As for whether Marvel Studios ever considering a CG version of Chadwick in the Black Panther follow-up, Cole added, "I don’t remember any conversations about that. No. I don’t think we were ever...I don’t think anyone felt that would be appropriate."

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is now playing in theaters.

Nakia would've been the Hollywood choice. I'm glad we're not there yet. Sure she was the mother of his child, but I'm still kind hoping we see her using the name Monica Lynne as an alias for spy work in Chicago or something and be more comics accurate that way.

As far as Ororo goes, maybe she will be the bride of the new T'Challa. She's a young pickpocket in Cairo right now.

I'm so glad it was Shuri. These movies are pretty close to the comics. Black Panther covers the original Panther's Rage storyline by way of Christopher Priest (and others) while Wakanda Forever was Deadliest of the Species and DoomWar by way of AvX (and Ta Nehesi Coates, Stan and Jack's FF, Ironheart and more).

Ryan Coogler is the man as far as I'm concerned. He's comics accurate while still making a good movie that stands on it's own accord.

Yo, Gunn! Safran! How about Coogler for Superman?

Can't wait for his next cbm, whatever he chooses to do.

Even tho Shuri is the logical one, I don’t think she had the screen presence to carry the whole film, Letitia acted her butt off but she doesn’t have that quality that Lupita or Danai have, or Winston Duke.

To be honest I would have rather had M’Baku but that’s my person opinion lol

@MisterDoctor217 - I agree with you about Letitia, not about M'Baku though.

@Blastaar -

Yeah, it’s not bashing or anything but some actors don’t have that star quality or screen presence, they can be great actors, but to be a movie start and carry big theatrical movies is another thing.

Or they have to be actors who have that quality specifically for that franchise or movie.
My guess that’s why the box office wasn’t as big as the first one, Letitia isn’t a big draw to be honest.

I mean Ángela Bassett commanded every scene she was in, that’s just star quality right there.

@MisterDoctor217 - Ramonda was a beast! Great acting by Ms. Basset.

@MisterDoctor217 - Exactly, for one, she's WAAAAY too frail and delicate looking, doesn't have a commanding presence(Shuri from the comics did though), not THAT great of an actress, and not very attractive(not ugly).

On the otherhand.....Angela Bassett could've been a VERY convincing Black Panther. Look at those f**king guns, man, her arms, she's gorgeous, sexy, is a GREAT actress, and has immense gravitas. I mean, it would be far from canon but I'd totally ignore it not being canon if they had found a way to make Ramonda a Black Panther.

Best part of the movie by far was

Namor (Kulkulcan)

Can't wait to see him again

Shuri Black Panther not so much

I am not opposed to Shuri being the Black Panther. Personally I would have gone with Nakia because it would reinforce the notion that being Black Panther would be TChalla Jr. birthright if both this parents were Black Panther.

What I take umbrage to is the fact that they pull out the "it's in the comics" nonsense. They have significantly changed Namor and have changed the fact that M'Baku is a hero as opposed to a villain but suddenly NOW they need to stick to the comics.

That logic is lame in light of everything they have done in the MCU
RolandD
RolandD - 11/21/2022, 4:14 PM
@Forthas - Story wise it was logical for the same reasons it was logical in the comics, not just because it was in the comics of you get my distinction.
Forthas
Forthas - 11/21/2022, 4:57 PM
@RolandD - I totally get your distinction. There may be a great reason why they went with Shuri whether it was in the comics or not, I am just making the case that it being in the comics is not a compelling argument anymore because of the MANY changes they make throughout the MCU. At this point, whether something is in the comics or not is no longer a reason to do or not do something.

I never really got why ppl wanted Okoye or even Nakia to be Black Panther, I think their convo in the first movie about be loyal to the throne/saving my country solidified why they would never take the mantle no matter how suitable they are.

Lupita/Nakia is who I would've gone with. Marvel and Disney's got this killer actress and they do nothing with her...

Wish it was Nakia or M’Baku but Letitia did pretty well too. Definitely not as strong as Lupita or Winston would have been but not terrible either.

She at least surpassed my expectations so that was a pleasant surprise.

Ah, cause Disney is suddenly against resurrecting dead actors? They are right though, it would've been inappropriate. It's a dumb and unnecessary thing to do anyway.

@NathimusPrime - Disney are the last folks that can claim to be all "appropriate" and whatnot..."Song of the South", inappropriate drawings/renderings, contradictory woke nonsense, monetary scandals, etc, etc, etc.

I understand what you means though.
