BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER Writer Reveals That [Spoiler] Originally Had A Larger Role

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever introduces a new character to the MCU in its mid-credits scene, and writer Joe Robert Cole has now revealed that they originally had a larger role in the sequel...

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever concludes on a powerful note, with Shuri (Letitia Wright) burning her funeral robes as she finally allows herself to stop mourning her brother T'Challa's death and attempt to move on as Wakanda's new protector.

Then, in the movie's mid-credits scene, things get even more emotional when we learn that T'Challa had a son with Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o).

As Shuri chats with her nephew (Divine Love Konadu-Sun), he tells her that his real name is T'Challa. This obviously suggests that the boy will eventually grow to take on the mantle of Black Panther, and possibly even rule Wakanda as king.

Though it would be reasonable to assume that the idea of T'Challa having a son was only brought up after Chadwick Boseman's death, writer Joe Robert Cole has now revealed that "Toussaint" was always going to be part of Ryan Coogler's sequel - and actually had a larger role at one point.

"T’Challa had a child in a previous iteration of the script prior to Chad’s passing," Cole tells Rolling Stone. "Him having a child was always in the DNA of what we wanted to do. We just weren’t sure, after he passed, about the best way to incorporate him. So there were various iterations of his son being in our new story."

It seems there was talk of introducing the son of the Black Panther earlier in the movie when Ramonda (Angela Basset) pays Nakia a visit in Haiti, but Cole believes they "landed on the best possible version."

"Yeah, [in] a previous iteration, we really were more child-focused in the narrative, and his son was a part of that. Obviously that changed, but we wanted him to exist in the film in some way. It was much more reduced. And there were conversations about, when do we reveal this information to the audience and what’s the best version of it? Not only emotionally, but just narratively for the story and how it affects the characters in the story when they find out this information, and so forth. We played around a little bit, but he was never going to have a much larger presence after Chad passed."

We're not sure when we'll see T'Challa Jr. again, but unless a significant time-jump takes place between movies, it'll be a while before he's ready to inherit his father's - now aunt's - mantle.

What did you guys make of Wakanda Forever introducing T'Challa's son? Would you like to see him take over as the Black Panther when he comes of age, or should Shuri be the one to carry on her brother's legacy for as long as possible?

It certainly would have been a better story to focus it on him and T'Challa. But at the end of the day, it's a Namor movie lol

@bobevanz - after the first movie dealt with sins of the father it would have been great to have the second movie about TChalla and his son.

@bobevanz - Namor was boring didn't get much screen time. Shuri's arc was amazing.

@MILESSPIDERMAN - man I thought Namor exuded confidence and menace. That’s Namor! This franchise has had some of the best villains of all the MCU, it’s 2 for 2 in my book. Excuse me while I make a separate post about just that.

I was grinning from ear to ear when he was revealed

I want TChalla Jr. to become Black Panther but I also do think that they could have derivative heroes...sort of like the Bat Family...so Shuri, M'Baku, and Nakia could be heroes also if not the Black Panther.

Watching him grow up and be prepared to be king could be interesting. How you groom a king and a black panther from very young

@GhostDog - It’s basically the story they insinuated that T’Challa already went through under T’Chaka’s and Suri’s eye.

@kg8817 - exactly but to see that in real time would be cool.

I like that this movie acknowledged that T’Challa taught Shuri all that she knew. Maybe we can see her mentor T’Challa Jr into the intellectual savant that BP is in the comics

@GhostDog - I love that if the next movie is T'Challa Jr.s movie, that all three movies will be able to stand on their own as separate movies as well as working organically as part of a trilogy.

That's a really neat and unique structure.

So, we didn't need a T'Chaka movie to understand T'Challa inheriting the mantle and similarly you don't need to see T'Challa's movie to understand Wakanda Forever. A third movie focusing on young T'Challa's journey to the throne would also be a jumping on point.

Yet taken together you get a genuine saga. So far it has the makings of one the great trilogies. Wakanda Forever is basically Empire Strikes Back. Deeper, darker, more emotional and character-driven.

Overall it would tell the tale of 1) the hero, T'Challa, 2)the loss and absence of T'Challa and 3) the Return of the King. It's like the three rules of magic in The Prestige; First you show them something, then you take it away, then you bring it back.

@WakandanQueen - It was so good and I keep thinking about it.

It hit the right tone after the movie technically ending on a very somber note.

If there was a rumor i wanted to be true was this one, as much as i love the Multiverse concept thankfully in this case those shenanigans weren't used or needed, and it felt like a natural transition imo. Looking forward to lil' T Challa's future in the MCU.

Kid was really well cast, when I saw him I was like “Wow, he actually looks like Chadwick.” Part of me thought he was a nephew or something.

I just wish they’d named him something else.
Like, I’d understand if he took his fathers name upon his own coronation, like King T’Challa II….but as his birth name? That’s just lazy, like Nick Fury Jr

@GetsugaTensho22 - Because sons are never named after their fathers in the real world.

@GetsugaTensho22 - It’s so strange to me that people find that weird. I’m named after my father and we both share a name with his father.

Hot take here, the Black Panther franchise has had some of the best villains, big fan of Klaue, but namely, Killmonger and Namor. Attuma was a decent henchman but didn’t stand out enough to be a side boss. In dialogue anyway. He certainly didn’t attain to those first 3.

Hey gamers is this a dude boss? Either way, looks awesome

@B89 - I never did finish that, it was when I switched from gamer to phone zombie, the gamer would have been such a fun guy for my kids to play with, but I worked so much… and then, when I was home, I was on my phone. So no excuses.

@TheWalkingCuban - they're not cheap but I've enjoyed mine. And its never too late I recently got my dad into stranded deep ( think cast away like survival game ) after him not playing in years to. And he probly started all this by having a nes and PS1 when I was a kid ahaha.

@TheWalkingCuban - could be, similar interests can only help I would think especially if there's something like a Zelda that all parties have played over the years ( the new ones are still great ). And no doubt they would have fun on a ps5 ahah

@B89 - Zelda was always my jam and an easy way I could have connected with my kids. Every time I tried to connect with my kids work would keep me on the road all night. I got to where I stopped trying. But I can try again.
