Fruitvale Station cinematographer Rachel Morrison has been chosen by Ryan Coogler to lens Black Panther. Where does this information come from? I read Morrison's CV! Morrison is an accomplished DP in both film and television, having recently worked on both Dope and Confirmation for The Flash director Rick Famuyiwa. This year, she was nominated for an Outstanding Cinematography for Nonfiction Programming Emmy after shooting part of What Happened, Miss Simone?, a Nina Simone documentary.

There has been a lot of talk lately about the lack of female leads in big budget studio films, and yet the situation is even more dire behind the camera. It's great to see talented artists like Morrison and Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman) get these high-profile gigs.

Coogler has long been a vocal proponent of diverse film crews, having once said "I feel like women are better filmmakers than men...  In film school, life, whatever, they’re equipped to do this job, in many ways, better than us. They’re infinitely more complex than we are. Stronger and sharper. So, you know, we’re going to get better movies [if we have more female filmmakers]. The industry would improve. That’s the best thing I could say about that. They’ve got to be given the opportunity."

Yes!!!! I love how Ryan is providing opportunities for his crew. I like that he works with the same folks. I like that Marvel is fine with that.

Man, I still can't believe a big budgeted Marvel films is "going to be his most personal film yet". Like, CREED is in his friggin DNA, man. His dad's favorite movie was Rocky 2, mix that with his dad dying and the whole movie about legacy and fathers with that specifically deal with the relationship between Apollo and Rocky, the fact that he found a story in Panther that feels more personal is insane. But this is a good thing, we can have the full emotional passion of an indie film with all the perks of a well-polished blockbuster that fits in with the most popular film world at the moment.

Like, Panther is going to be ridiculously good, even though I do feel like Panther was a little overhyped(he wasn't in the movie enough, and his arc feels a tad rushed, but it's understandable) in Civil War, and I also don't think Coogler is their most talented hire(that goes to Taika, IN MY OPINION) but the potential and talent is undeniable here. I've wanted to see Panther since Iron man, but just now I'm realizing how this movie is beyond the MCU, it has the potential to be truly special. I hope I'm right. My best wishes to the director, cast, crew, and producers at Marvel, this movie is incredibly important.

"I feel like women are better filmmakers than men."

I guess we're just going to ignore that he said that...
