SHE-HULK: ATTORNEY AT LAW Head Writer Reveals Her BLACK WIDOW Movie Pitch Included A High School Reunion

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law Head Writer Jessica Gao has revealed more details about her failed Black Widow pitch to Marvel Studios, explaining the movie would have revolved around a high school reunion.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law Head Writer Jessica Gao recently revealed that she pitched a Black Widow movie to Marvel Studios that involved Jennifer Walters. The studio pointed out that it felt like she was actually pitching a She-Hulk feature, and Gao was eventually given the chance to bring that character to the small screen in her own Disney+ series.

Talking to The Wrap, Gao elaborated on her Black Widow idea and revealed that the premise would have been Natasha Romanoff attending a high school reunion, confronting her past in the process.

"It was basically a 'Grosse Pointe Blank' story for Black Widow," she recalls. "Basically you find out that in high school, as a teenage spy/Russian agent, she was planted at an American high school, because she had to assassinate someone’s dad and then 20 years later, she goes back to the high school reunion and has to deal with the fallout of this fake identity where she betrayed all these people in high school."

Gao didn't explain how Jennifer factored into that story, though we'd guess that she probably went to school with the undercover Natasha. Later, the writer confirmed that she also pitched ideas for Captain Marvel and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

"Each time, [Marvel Studios] got to know me more, I got to know them more," the writer added. "By the time I came into pitch 'She-Hulk,' I think they had a very good sense of what my sense of humor was. They had a good sense of what type of writer I was, what kind of story I built. They just had a very good indication of what I’m about. I think that that really helped sell it."

The Black Widow movie we eventually got was a little more serious than Gao's version sounds, though it could have been a lot of fun had the hero not been killed in Avengers: Endgame. A superhero returning to high school for a reunion is also a really clever premise, and one we'd love to see explored elsewhere in the MCU.

I am usually semi-amused when these creative people talk about why they "think" Marvel / Kevin makes the decisions that they do, instead of just asking them. I mean, what if they are wrong (since, you know, they are "guessing").

I wonder how many times Kevin reads this shit and thinks something like, "Nope. Wrong again."

Anyway, no big deal, obviously. However, I would rather people just ask me "why" I accepted their idea, or whatever, rather then tell reporters why they "think" I did.

I don't understand why so many people just don't go to the source of the information they are "guessing" at.

For example, I have countless times read directors and actors telling reporters why films they worked on succeeded, failed, were loved or hated, etc., when it looks obvious they are guessing (and many times incorrect) and they never seem to just ask people who saw the films. They could easily do this on their Twitter or whatever accounts, or just ask people when they are approached in public. But they just keep pretending they know things without any evidence that they went to the source.

Maybe it's more complicated than that, but I would really be embarrassed to act like I know what I'm talking about when I'm really just guessing. Like now, for example?

@LSHF - Movies are subjective. So explaining why a movie succeeds or fails, is often just guessing anyway. And with your Kevin Feige point, if he accepts your pitch, you're gonna tell him thank you. You're not gonna bother asking him why he's giving you the job.😂

@99OPTIMISTPRIME - That makes sense. Kevin has to be the busiest person in Hollywood right now with everything he's overseeing.

But what reason would she possibly have, for attending a high school reunion as a civilian, if she's a publicly known Avenger? Covering more of her earlier days as a spy in America, could've been interesting though.

She-Hulk episode one was AWESOME also explained how Hulk has Multiple Personalities. Hulk not a version but has multi-Personalities disorder and why we get different Hulk in all the movies.

Also, why people like Professor X can't read his mind or control him.

1) Incredible Hulk personality
2) Avenger's personality
3) Age of Ultron personality
4) Thor Ragnarok personality
5) Endgame personality

Now She-Hulk all the same Hulk. I think the Hulk will get angry and get tired of being controlled by Banner :)

The problem with the Black Widow film was that they had a story where the real main character was pushed to supporting character. Yelena had the more interesting through line, it was really her story.

Yelena's mind controlled at the beginning, she has an invested interest in stopping the Red Room mind controlling Widows, she's the one devastated that the best in her life was the sadly her fake family(that dinner table scene was great). Black Widow's story is the main storyline but lacks emotional weight while Yelena's had more weight but she was pushed to supporting.

Ultimately though, they made the film far too late and obviously that hindered any means to form character growth, which to me is essential to a good story.

Also, not a fan of Gao's pitch. Doesn't sound like a Black Widow story to me. Gives me 21 Jump Street vibes.

I liked the plot of Black Widow but I feel like it was way too catastrophic for what it was supposed to be. For starters I loved Natasha on the run and seeing her use her off the grid connections to evade Ross. I hated how the Red Room was this over the top sky fortress that kept moving from place to place. I was hoping it would be an underground base in Russia. I was hoping we would have explored more of the Widow + Winter Soldier program and dived into some flashbacks between Natasha and Bucky. The villain should have been Red Guardian and still followed the fake parent plot. Taskmaster should have been the villain of Thunderbolts.
