Blade the first successful Marvel movie!?!

Technically Howard the Duck was Marvel's first feature film. But I agree that Blade was Marvel's first successful movie project.

Whoever says, it wasn't the first successful Marvel movie, can go F*U*C*K himself, because this is a real good movie, without shitty jokes like in todays marvel movies.

It got Wesley Snipes, Passenger 57! It got a story and good fights.

After the huge failure that Batman and Robin was and the fact that the early marvel stuff was crap and straight to video, Blade was a massive success I had friends who had never been into comics and had never heard off him(myself I had heard of blade but never read anything he was in and my only came across him in spider-man tas)loving blade and especially snipes's portrayal and the early use off slo-mo which would really come to light in the matrix. It was a r rated film so wasn't massive numbers at the box office but good for a movie of that genre at the time. One of the greatest cbms of all time.

Hmmm. Powder faces. Well that's a first for me. All my friends and cousins, never heard that one. Anyhoo, they didn't do much back then to market Blade as a comicbook movie. I knew him, loved the movies, yep, even the third film. Unfortunately most people didn't know anything about him. I imagine it was quite difficult to get the studios to greenlight the movie to begin with. The only thing he had going for him at the time was the fact that everyone craved Vampire movies.

@Wyleejay I agree wholeheartedly but with the times being different it really tells me diversity is not on the CBM studios to do list. I grew up with these characters and I admit it is a travisty to see them switched around as far as color and truth be told T'Challa and Static are really the only stand alone black heroes so it is tough to force people to blackwash the comics. But I see them taking liberties with adding an agent Coulson to the Avengers. And say hey I want to show my son a hero he can look up to when I have one. They gave Blade a Noir feel to it so its impossible to let kids delve into that basket. They Whitewashed Spawn. and again as a fan of this medium I would like to see more female heroes and heroes of color as opposed to just blackwashed for supporting roles. I read this website everyday at work and man what a calamity when they said that Human Torch may be Black it was all downhill from there. But I digress. Again Blade was the first big budget film to score dividends for Marvel and set off the modern day Hero revolution at the time when Blade came out Comics were folding fast and Spawn singlehandedly almost killed Marvel and led to a DC resurgence

@Dougdzm. Right on. I don't care what ethnic background a character is. If they changed Tony or Steve Rodgers it wouldn't matter to the characterization. You simply can't change a character like Black Panther or Luke Cage. Their race is a huge part of their characterizations. The Human Torch doesn't have to be white, as long as him and Sue Storm are still brother and Sister. Thats what matters to the characters portrayal. I believe if they do change the Human Torch, and people see that it doesnt really matter, we WILL get to see other BIG time characters get altered too. Its easy to change a character like Nick Fury or Heimdall like you said, but they are so scared to change the characters that are the most popular. That will change. Hell Marvel even changed another Asgardian. Hogun the Grim was not Asian in the comics, but when you think about it, Asgard is another realm, and the Asgardians live for thousands of years. It makes more sense that Asgard would be more diverse.

Blade's not a superhero.
He's a vampire hunter played by a hard-as-nails martial artist-turned actor. Wesley Snipes was badass, but he's doing what either the script or whatever he wanted called for. He's not playing Blade, he's playing.... a badass.

With all the liberties they took with the character too, he might as well be an original creation. It didn't hurt it, of course, but at the same time it's hard to call this a Marvel adaptation when all it works off of are three ideas - one: Blade's birth, two: Blade's mother, and three: Deacon being the vampire who "killed" his mum.

Blade was the first DVD I purchased and was the title I sold most of to people purchasing their first DVD player.

A fantastic move that unfortunately has special effects that haven't held up well. Still it contains one of the best combat scenes in movie history.
