Marvel Studios Boss Shares Big BLADE, DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN, And FANTASTIC FOUR Updates

Thanks to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, we have big new updates on Blade, Daredevil: Born Again, and Fantastic Four, and it sounds like a team reveal for the latter may finally be on the horizon...

After a hit-and-miss Phase 4, the hope is that Marvel Studios will rebound with Phase 5. If the critical response to Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania is any indication, the Multiverse Saga is going to continue delivering mixed results, but Kevin Feige is definitely excited about the MCU's future.

During a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the executive shared the project he's perhaps most excited about: 2025's Fantastic Four reboot.

"We sort of talked about mutants and that whole aspect to the Marvel world, but Fantastic Four is the foundation for everything that came after in the comics," Feige says. "There's certainly been versions of it [on screen], but never inhabiting the storytelling of the MCU. And that's something that is really exciting for us."

"People will start to hear more about that soon," he added, hopefully hinting at casting news. "We plan on that being a big pillar of the MCU going forward, just the way they've been in the comics for 50 or 60 years."

Marvel's First Family is clearly going to be front and centre in the next era of MCU storytelling, something we're sure many of you will welcome.

Feige was also asked where things stand with the recently delayed Blade movie starring Mahershala Ali, and it sounds like work is now progressing nicely. "It's going well. Our director Yann [Demange] is down in Atlanta right now," he confirms. "Cameras roll in, like, the next 10 weeks or so."

He'd finish by talking about Daredevil: Born Again's place in the MCU, suggesting the 18-episode Disney+ series will be another experiment for Marvel Studios as they continue balancing stories on the big and small screens.

"It's Charlie Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio, and they're amazing actors and storytellers in their own right," Feige notes. "That's sort of what I was talking about with the fun of episodic television: That's really where we're experimenting with that, with Daredevil in particular."

It's an exciting and intriguing few years ahead for the MCU, and it will be interesting to see how - if at all - the response to Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania changes Marvel Studios' approach. After all, that movie's writer, Jeff Loveness, is currently penning Avengers: The Kang Dynasty...

@DrReedRichards - They were the team that started it all. Feige and Shakman better give us the movie of a lifetime.

@FilmGuy7878 - so called fans will just rip it apart for whatever stupid reason. it starts with casting the expectations are high. once they cast who no one has speculated. the hate will flow.

@supermanrex - Unfortunately that's how it always is. I honestly don't give a shit who they cast, just as long as they give a good performance and embody the character.

In Feige I trust, even in this Phase. Shakman, though, is not a name with the weight I had in mind for the First Family...

@FilmGuy7878 - isn’t it critics job judge performance ? Unless your talking about fans who not paid movie critics know nothing about acting

So Blade really is gonna happen it appears. Never expected it.

Anyway, I'm still intrigued by Daredevil's episode order. At times 13 episodes already felt a little much, so I wonder how Marvel Studios is gonna tackle it.

@bkmeijer1 - check out the interview on ew.com instead of wildling spreading it up into a dozen articles. Feige actually says each episode will be a self contained story vs. The previous way of splitting a 6 hour movie into a series.
So 18 episodes that flow more like how the mandalorian or bad batch go, means we get satisfying conclusions at the end of every episode and less filler. That's the concept anyway
GhostDog
GhostDog - 2/15/2023, 9:57 AM
@bkmeijer1 - a comprehensive story that stretches over the season but some self-contained stories sprinkled in, procedural style. Like Mando. Matt may have a case of the week here and there that he wraps up in an episode and then you can still have the larger story going on in the background.

bkmeijer1 - 2/15/2023, 9:58 AM
@Vigor - yeah, that's intriguing. They haven't really done something like that before, and immediately going in with 18 episodes sounds like a tall order to get right.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 2/15/2023, 10:01 AM
@GhostDog - still, Mando had only 8 episodes and that even had some uninteresting episodes already (and those weren't the filler episodes)
Fogs

@Vigor - Nice, so they'll try kind of a law and order approach, probably with a thin stoyline developing along the series.

That's cool.

@bkmeijer1 - true. This is a big swing with 18. I think they're betting on the desire for more DD after 4 years after without him.
Vigor

@Fogs - yup. That's how I interpreted his statement

@GhostDog - I feel like this is how Batman and the Question should be handled. I really like this concept
StSteven
StSteven - 2/15/2023, 12:34 PM
@Fogs - Agreed. I think that it will be a healthy mix of Matt in the courtroom and his DD activities at night, like investigating things relating to his court cases. And that ongoing thread that you mention will likely lead to the Kingpin being the one behind it all and Matt confronting him by the end of the season (or however they lay this out). Like throughout the different episodes Matt takes down the Kingpin's lackeys getting closer and closer until the final showdown. And it can also have a bit of a detective element to it as well, where Matt doesn't know who is behind it all at first but he slowly throughout the episodes figures it out.

This approach I think would help to differentiate it from the Netflix series and would almost be like Marvel;s version of a Batman TV show, which would be kinda funny if they managed to "Batman" before WBD could "Batman" a Batman TV show.
Fogs
Fogs - 2/15/2023, 1:08 PM
@StSteven - Agreed, will be a nice format to try. Reminds me of those 90's TV series like Highlander and such. I like it.
StSteven
StSteven - 2/15/2023, 3:20 PM
@Fogs - Yep. Like he has his "case of the week" which may or may not (we don't know and he doesn't know) take him one step closer to figuring out who the mastermind is.

I also like the idea of the audience following along with Matt and learning new things as he's learning them. Creates a feeling of suspense. I mean, obviously we know that the Kingpin is a big part of this, but they can (and should) throw in enough misdirects to make us wonder who's really pulling the strings. it may not turn out to be him. Marvel we all are EXPECTING it to be Kingpin, but what if it turns out to be someone we didn't see coming, kinda like "Usual Suspects"? That's edge of your seat shit right there BUT that's going to require some damn good writing. Hope they're up for it. Fingers crossed.

Those weren't really that big of updates but I'm glad that Blade is finally getting up and running.

I actually have a lot of hope in Matt Shakman that he's gonna do the FF right. In a lot of the interviews I've seen with him, he seems like he's an ACTUAL fan of the comics (unlike most MCU directors and writers nowadays who probably haven't picked up a comic in their lives).

With Born Again, I'm cautiously optimistic. I love Cox and D'Onofrio as actors and I'm positive they will give this their all but I'm just worried over the people behind the scenes (you know, typical MCU writing that doesn't fit Daredevil's character at all). I personally liked Matt in She-Hulk and I sorta hope they go with that more light-hearted personality with Matt's persona but manage to keep Daredevil dark.

I just saw "Blade" a few days ago in 4K. Movie is still an absolute banger and pure 90's gloriness. No chance Ali can catch up with Snipes' screen presence and physicality.

Many of the Quantumania reviews indicate that the writing is horrible and THAT'S who's writing Kang Dynasty? Ruh-roh, Elroy.
